PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Over time, some names vanish from maps
Some places are no longer on maps. They existed long ago and have been forgotten except in history books and newspapers. Two examples:• Klondike – Existed from 1899 to 1926 and was located west of the present-day outlet mall and I-95. After the devastating freeze of 1894-95, Judge Minor S. Jones was determined to find a place to grow his orange trees. He and George B. Hall bought land where there were no settlers. They grew more than 2,000 trees and had a stock farm with numerous hogs. They thought their oranges were gold! Soon, there were many employees and several families from Sebastian who purchased land to grow Irish potatoes, eggplants, beans, cabbage, cucumbers and citrus. The Florida Star newspaper often had a column reporting the news from “the Klondike.” Billy Smith, a Seminole Indian, tended to the hogs. Aunt Polly Parker, one of the oldest Seminoles, often visited Klondike. Pictures of Klondike
can be found at the Sebastian Museum of the old school house. Has anyone heard of Lake Chapman that was near the Klondike?• Van Valkenburgh Creek – East side of U.S. 1, is part of the Main Canal that follows 30th Street. In the early records of the Indian River Farms, they mention that work started on this creek in 1912.
Abraham Van Valkenburgh of New York filed Homestead papers in 1883 near the land where the Vero Man bones were discovered. He died in 1914 in an insane asylum. Vossingbury Creek (this is on the map) is a north/south creek that parallels the Indian River from 37th Street to the Main Canal. No such person, family, or business can be found. Is it possible it is a corrupt name for Van Valkenburgh Creek?

• While I’m not a big beer drinker, I’ve made it a point to go on tours of the breweries for Budweiser (Missouri), Coors (Colorado) and Miller (Wisconsin). I found them fascinating. Last week, a tour of the new Walking Tree Brewery in Vero Beach provided the same level of satisfaction. What a cool place! Walking Tree may be a fraction of the size of the aforementioned breweries, but there’s plenty of room for expansion – and I do mean plenty of room. Walking Tree’s co-founders, Alan Dritenbas and Mike Malone, are in their 30s. Five years ago, they were set up on what Dritenbas jokingly referred to as a blind “man date” by Samantha Klein, a local Realtor. She knew both guys were serious about brewing their
own beer. So, they met at The Stamp … and pretty soon they were drawing up a business plan for Walking Tree. The brewery is off the beaten path, so to speak. It’s in a 24,000-square-foot building about a half-block south of Aviation Boulevard. The address is 3209 Dodger Road. This place has all kinds of potential. It’s an old warehouse used by the Navy during World War II. It’s huge – that’s the only way to describe it. A flag owned by Alan’s grandfather, Jack Dritenbas (a former County Commissioner), hangs from the rafters in the middle of the warehouse. The “tasting room” is open seven days a week. It opens at 3 p.m. weekdays and noon weekends. Beers start at $4 and a glass of wine costs $8.

In doing research, “walking tree” is how the Indians described mangroves, according to Alan. Mike’s wife, Brooke Malone, designed the eye-catching logo. It was a lengthy process, as she wanted just the right look. “I’m a doodler,” she said. The business partners have a big decision to make in the coming weeks. They have to choose a distributor for their beers – in turn, the distributor would deliver it to bars in the area. Three distributors are vying for the job.• The Huffington Post had a really neat article about Vero Beach last week. Tremendous publicity for the area. You can find the article by doing an online search. Thanks to Frank Moshier and Cindy Northup for letting me know about it.• Why would Brian Heady enter the race for the District 5
seat on the County Commission when he has no chance of winning? Oh, never mind. I know why. The sad thing is, now only registered Republicans will be able to vote for the Bob Solari vs. Jay Kramer match-up.• Some rather disturbing graffiti, in very large letters, found in the downtown area of Vero Beach: “Dismantle white supremacy, pls.” Man, that came out of nowhere.• Wait a minute. Did the above graffiti person really think saying “please” would help the cause?• A few weeks ago, I met Bill Douglass for a “Meet me at Table 51” interview at C.J. Cannon’s. Bill said his dad used to go to Cannon’s every morning and order the same thing for breakfast. Lester T. Douglass died about 15 years ago, but Lois Cappelen, a longtime employee at the restaurant, still remembers his breakfast order – “chipped beef on toast, with a little dish of apple sauce.” Bill smiled, and nodded his head in agreement.

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what is a regular feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
If not for a job board at the University of Kentucky, Mary Snyder may have never known the Indian River County Library Association was in need of a director. She saw the job posting in 1983 and, within a matter of months, was hired by the nonprofit’s 15-member board. She has had the same role ever since. (The county took over the library system in 1986 and she helped guide it through the transition.) Her time as the county’s director of Library Services is winding down, though, as she is set to retire at the end of November. “It’s never been boring,” she said. “Major praise and
thanks to the library staff, most of whom have been here serving for many, many years. They love the library, as I do. We want it to always be a vibrant community space providing quality library services to our community – wherever the technology takes us.” The library, which has three full-service branches and one satellite branch, has 53 employees.
When she took the job originally, she was happy to return to Florida. She grew up in DeLand, but attended college in Kentucky (Morehead State and the University of Kentucky). You might say working at a library was Plan B. “I wanted to be a race car driver,” she said. “My nickname was Mario (for Mario Andretti). I love to drive fast.” Mary says she has never been issued a speeding ticket. She has received one warning. She’s a huge NASCAR fan. Her favorite all-time drivers are Richard Petty, Rusty Wallace and Dale Jarrett.
