Did you know elephants were here long before the National Elephant Center opened in Fellsmere? McKee Jungle Gardens constructed the Wild Animal Compound in 1953. It included an Elephant House. It became a “supply base” to “fill your order. If you need a baby elephant, the Compound will deliver at your door for about $5,000.” In 1953, the headlines read: “People in Pursuit of Ponderous Pachyderm.” Denice the Menace, a 2,500-pound elephant, escaped. The whole town came out to help. Coach Tex Warrington and the Vero Beach Athletic Association provided assistance. One boy got his foot stomped and another was chased up a tree. A local fisherman located her. Imagine his surprise: he was looking for better fishing ground. After two days of evading capture, Denice was caught on a sandbar in the Indian River near the south county line. Then there was Queenie, the water-skiing elephant. In the

late 1950s, Joe Greene and his daughter, Liz, brought Queenie to town. Waldo Sexton asked to bring her to the Driftwood Inn for a picture postcard. It shows Queenie ringing a bell standing next to Waldo. Queenie performed at DeLeon Springs. She died in May 2011 at Valdosta Wild Adventures. A December 1961 headline: “Elephant Munches Hose, Poinsettias.” After a circus had finished its

show, one elephant strayed to Dahlia Lane. She had a feast on poinsettia plants. Mrs. Murdrak looked out her bedroom window at 11 p.m. and received quite a shock. The elephant also chewed the neighbor’s hose. In November 1973, elephants were stranded on U.S. 1. They tried to use the elephants to pull the truck out of the mud, instead they pushed it into a ditch. They stayed overnight at the Steil gas station on U.S. 1.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the “Cinderella” hype to subside:

• Sharon Letts isn’t trying to change the world. Instead, she’s taking a one-kid-at-a-time approach. Let’s face it, trying to get kids hooked on reading is not an easy thing to do in today’s world. She helps run a family business – Treasure Coast Jewelers & Music (you know, the distinctive tropical-pink building on U.S. 1) – and sees kids drawn to the area where video games are sold. Last summer, she started a reading club of sorts at the store. Kids reading 12 books will receive a free video game or a free cupcake from Classic Cupcakes. In one of the back rooms at the store is a huge bookcase, built by her father, with more than 300 books – there’s something for every age group. Sharon calls her program “Books and Lollys” because

she has always given kids lollipops when they come into the store. (She knows “Lollys” isn’t the correct spelling, but she’s OK with it.) Now, she gives kids lollipops and a book. Sharon keeps track of each “Books and Lollys” participant with old-fashioned index cards. Christian Letts, 8, is her assistant. He is the son of Sharon’s nephew. Christian stamps every book that is checked out. “I have to stamp a lot of books on Monday,” said the second-grader at Osceola Magnet School. “My hand gets really tired. Luckily, I get to take breaks.” For Christian, who is the fourth generation working at the store, it beats sweeping the floor. Sharon is a voracious reader – she reads five to 10 books a week! This summer, she hopes to take “Books and Lollys”

outside the store. She’ll try to get involved with churches and some apartment buildings. “I just love to teach,” she said. “I love kids, and I love reading.” How would she like to spend her retirement years? “I’d like to ride around in a truck and give out books all day,” she said.• Having been in the Indian River Mall many times in recent years, I can’t say I was shocked when I heard it was going to be put on the auction block in a foreclosure sale. It was a game-changer in terms of local development back in 1996, but indoor malls are now like dinosaurs.• Speaking of dinosaurs, did you know NPR did a report on the Vero Man dig? Very cool. If you’d like a link to the 4 minute, 40 second story, send me an email.• In this space last week I said I wasn’t going to do an out-of-state license plate count this year. (I did in March

for eight consecutive years while at the Press Journal.) So, what happened on the morning of March 2? I pull up to the stoplight at U.S. 1 and 12th Street, and the car in front of me has an Alaska tag. Thanks to readers Bill Gallagher and Marta Christjansen for their out-of-state plate reports. Both are very close to getting every state.• So I wished Jeanne Gascoigne a happy 93rd birthday, and she responded with an email that made me chuckle. “Thank you for the birthday wishes! Only two more years to learn your No. 1 song.” Actually, the countdown will take closer to three years. Maybe I’ll time it so the No. 1 song is in the issue that coincidences with her 96th birthday.• Knowing Tom Lowther has reached the age where he’s eligible to play softball with the Codgers, I asked him if he knew his batting average. “I don’t know,” he said, “but I do know I’ve hit 12 home runs.”

As a newcomer to the area, I’ve spent the past few months searching for hidden treasures of the Treasure Coast in Indian River County. There are some amazing places to find, that is for certain. Here are a few more places I have encountered:

• Rock City Gardens. Amazingly, this plant nursery – located on U.S. 1 north of County Road 510 – does not charge for a person to sightsee. Here one can find beautifully maintained grounds around which you can leisurely walk. Stunning walkways adorned with lush plants abound. A lake to wander around sits in the middle of the property adding to the ambiance. Peaceful. Not only is this a place where you can purchase what you find incredible, but it holds events, benefits, classes, and various community affairs. • An art museum. Love art? I do too! Vero Beach has a fine art museum, the Vero Beach Museum of Art, situated

in Riverside Park, next to Riverside Theatre. Different collections are on display at various times of the year. Many events are held throughout the year as well. It is a peaceful, elegant place, with fantastic art. Guides are available to ask questions, and are well-educated on the art displayed. Classes for both children and adults, tours, events, and appraisals, are some of the many great aspects of the museum.

• A quiet place. Although there are many wonderful, beautiful places to visit, I have found Sebastian has a nice quiet place to wander right along the river. Located near Sebastian’s Riverview Park, it is an area where you can stroll along the pier; sit in your car and look out at the water; or visit with dog walkers while finding solace.

Know a great place I have yet to visit? Email me at [email protected].

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

437. “Bette Davis Eyes”(1981) Kim CarnesMemory: I actually met the song’s co-writer one time right here in Vero Beach.

436. “Cocaine”(1977) Eric ClaptonMemory: You instantly know this song when you hear the guitar riffs. A true classic. 435. “North to Alaska”(1960) Johnny HortonMemory: The oldest song in the countdown. Would have been a perfect karaoke song back in the day.
