Knowledge is the key to finding the right property. Let me provide you with the knowledge you need.

The property, owned by the city of Vero Beach, is on a rounded hilltop facing Old Dixie Highway between 13 and 14th streets with its western boundary at 12th Avenue. The site was acquired through the efforts of C.E. Cox, a funeral director; Herman T. Zeuch, who with others laid out the town of Vero in 1914; and drugstore owner ‘Doc’ Charlie McClure, who secured a quit claim deed for the land. Reed Hutchinson, president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, spearheaded the project and Crestlawn Cemetery became a reality in early 1930. At the start, lots were sold for $10 a grave. To ensure orderly growth, as the population increased in the area, the property was subdivided and platted. By 1952, lots sold for $1 per square foot. In 1942, there were 370 grave lots and in 1966
there were 3,105. Today, single-space lots sell for $1,200 and there are 12,692 grave lots (of those, 1,335 are still available). A full-time sexton was hired after 1955 to care for the cemetery, which had been handled part time by the city’s Parks Division of Public Works. In the late 1960s a deep
well and sprinkler system were installed and the grounds were beautified with Royal Palm trees and shrubbery. Today, Crestlawn Cemetery is operated as a non-profit entity of the city. There’s no sales force and no extensive maintenance crew. It exists to provide reasonably priced interment for area residents. Earlier this month, voters added the cemetery to a list of public lands protected by the City Charter. Now, the land cannot be sold into private ownership without a referendum.

JUST WONDERING: What are the most popular items people bring in to pawn?

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the smell of turkey to fill the air:
• Because so much emphasis is put on education, I’ve always found it hard to believe the graduation rate in Florida is only about 75 percent. In Indian River County, it’s a little better – about 80 percent. Where do we lose them? While out and about the other day, I saw a sign in front of Vero Beach Elementary School with a simple message: “Goal 100% attendance every day.” My initial reaction? “Yeah, right.” I considered the goal to be unattainable, and contacted the School District and requested the attendance figures for Vero Beach Elementary, which has a little more than 700 students. You know what? The numbers are pretty impressive. Most days, attendance is more than 90 percent.
On Nov. 7, only one student was absent! Incredible. The day with the most absences? Halloween, when 61 kids missed school. As I’ve said many times before, I think it’s important for kids to go to school every day. Because, let’s face it, habits they develop in elementary school will carry over to adulthood.• So I was at the main library last week, shortly before it opened at 10 a.m., and saw maybe a dozen people patiently waiting outside the entrance. But when a library employee rolled open the steel gate, it turned into a scene like you see on TV for “Black Friday.” Thankfully, no one got trampled. Why the big rush? Apparently, they want to get their choice of computers on the second floor.• A tip of the hat to Ruth Stanbridge and the Indian

River County Historical Society for jumping through the necessary hoops to get a state historical marker placed at Dodgertown. Don’t know about you, but the older I get, the more I appreciate history.• A “how soon we forget” story. In talking with Renee Piazza in the On Site Window Tinting office, I saw her dog and asked about the name. What I heard her say: “Fibi” (pronounced “Fee-bee”). An unusual name for a dog, I thought. However, it’s actually “Phoebe” – you know, the character on the old TV show “Friends.” “Ahhhhh, OK! I get it now,” I told Renee. In case you’re wondering, the last episode of “Friends” aired in 2004.• Biggest surprise of the week? I was at the Publix at 53rd Street and U.S. 1, and the person bagging my groceries was none other than Alexander Wilson. Back in 2009, I wrote a column about Wilson ranking 17th in terms of age
among the 141,000 people employed by Publix. Wilson is now 96 years old. (Check out a photo of him on my Facebook page.) He says he’s been told by Publix that he is now No. 3 on the list. • A bit of housekeeping before we go. We’re moving things up a day – Tuesday is now going to be the distribution day for Lemmon Lines. (For the first five issues, the distribution day was Wednesday.)• It’s been two months since I left the Press Journal, and I’ve had more than my share of surreal experiences involving my name since then. For example, in calling a local business recently, the person I needed to talk with wasn’t there, so I left a message. As I often do, I spelled my last name: “L-e-m-m-o-n.” The person taking the message said: “Like the writer Russ Lemmon?” “Um, yes,” I said. “Like him.”

As owner of a used DVD shop, I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:
• Coming and Going (2011, PG-13, directed by Edoardo Ponti). How far would you go for love? Lee (Rhys Darby of “Flight of the Conchords”) fakes being wheelchair-bound to gain the affection of his long-time crush Alex (Sasha Alexander). Most of the humor derives from Lee’s attempts to keep Alex from finding out the truth – making this romantic comedy a bit of a one-trick pony. It is a good trick, however, as I was laughing throughout.
• The Straight Story (1999, G, David Lynch). Say what? The demented mind that brought us “Eraserhead” and “Blue Velvet” made a G-rated movie for Disney? It’s true! Based on actual events, the movie stars Richard Farnsworth as 73-year-old Iowa resident Alvin Straight. Alvin is
determined to mend his relationship with his ailing brother in Wisconsin and sets out to make the 240-mile trip – on a riding lawn mower! Essentially a road movie, “The Straight Story” will bring a smile to your face that will stay there for some time after the film is over.
• Flakes (2007, NR, Michael Lehmann). This farcical indie comedy peers into the mindset of the passionate collector. The collectible in this case is cereal – not cereal boxes, mind you –
cereal! Neal (Aaron Stanford) is the owner of a hip cereal bar which has attracted the eye of corporate America. For Neal, it’s either sell out or face being put out of business. Also starring the queen of quirk, Zooey Deschanel, this movie will have you rooting for the underdog.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
485. “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” (1969) Crosby, Stills & Nash Memory: You know, for the longest time, I thought the name of this song was “Sweet Judy Blue Eyes.”
484. “Love the Way You Lie” (2010) Rhianna featuring Eminem Memory: Not a fan of either as an individual performer, but I have to give them props for this one.
483. “Do That to Me One More Time” (1979) Captain & Tennille Memory: Not many guys would admit to having a Captain & Tennille song on the list, but that’s OK. It’s a nice, romantic song.
