PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Two members of Prange family drowned on island

It was once called Paradise; it is now called Prang(e) Island. The large island can be seen off the right side of the 17th Street bridge going east. There was a house, cistern and groves on the island. Sadly, two members of the Prange family drowned on the island. Frederick Prange was born in 1862 in Germany. He married Nettie May Gifford in 1893 in Vero Beach. She was a very popular teacher and the daughter of Henry Gifford, whose home still stands on 20th Place. They had two boys, Ralph (who drowned at 18 months) and Carl (who has descendants in Orlando). It soon became apparent that Nettie May did not stay on the island after the death of her son. In 1908, the following was printed in the local newspaper (Fort Pierce News): “Mrs. F.C. Prange of Vero has accepted a position as demonstrator for the Wilson

& Toomer Fertilizer Co., of Jacksonville, and will speak at various places in St. Lucie County during the next few weeks. Mrs. Prange is familiar with all the ingredients used in fertilizer manufacture, and her knowledge will be imparted to St. Lucie County residents free.” Fred Prange died by drowning in 1928. His body was not found for two days. Their son Carl died in

1952 at age 58 after being lost for 24 hours duck hunting. Nettie May Gifford Prange died in 1946 and left an amazing legacy. In 1939, in Orlando, she was named “Most Worthy Citizen.” She devised a short-cut method of teaching Braille reading to the blind. She was almost totally blind herself. The island was always called “Paradise” until it was sold in 1967. It is still noted that way on many maps.

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting to solve the “American Gothic” mystery:

• Campaign signs for Erin Grall are here, there and everywhere. Right now, there are about 400 in Indian River County. By the time the Aug. 30 Republican primary is upon us, there’s likely to be an additional 200 signs in front of homes and businesses. She is running for State Representative against Lange Sykes, Dale Glading and Greg MacKay. Sykes has been impressive in raising money (he and Grall have topped $180,000), but I have yet to see a campaign sign for him. Very strange. Glading, who is a distant third in raising money, has a fair number of signs out there. Every so often, you’ll see a MacKay sign. The slow start by the other three candidates is fine with

Bernie Grall, who is Erin’s dad. He’s serving as the campaign’s “sign chairman.” He said they wanted to get a head start in building name recognition – no question, that goal was achieved. I met with Bernie last week, and he showed me a binder with papers showing the property owner’s approval for every sign. Yep, Bernie’s binder. If you talk with political strategists, they’ll tell you campaign signs don’t matter that much in elections. Bernie says he’s been told that it makes only a 2 to 3 percent difference. “This is just a piece of the puzzle,” he said. Erin Grall ran for State Representative in 2010, and she lost by just 300 votes. It’s obvious the lessons learned during that campaign are helping her this time around.

• When Jim Hill, a member of the Sebastian City Council, withdrew from the County Commission race, who did he decide to back? Not fellow council member Richard Gillmor, but rather Susan Adams. No doubt that’s payback to Gillmor for entering the race. Of course, it appeared Gillmor entered the County Commission race just to stick it to Hill after Hill helped with the effort to remove Gillmor as mayor. Can you say “animosity”?• It’s going to be interesting to see if the inaugural Beach Town Music Festival in October – which will have Jake Owen as the headliner on the second day – will turn into a big deal. Certainly, the Indian River County Fairgrounds can handle a huge crowd. October is going to be a big month for music festivals. There’s one in California that will be generating all kinds of buzz nationally – with some of the biggest names in the

history of rock taking the stage. Anyway, kudos to Jake Owen for trying to bring a big-time event to Vero Beach.• Just want to give a tip of the hat to all of the volunteers who helped with the Vero Beach Air Show. It’s unfortunate the Blue Angels were unable to make it (because of a fatal crash a few weeks ago in Tennessee), but the show went on. There’s always a lot of hand-wringing about the weather. A fatal crash is something you don’t anticipate.• Memo to Debbie Mayfield (who is running for State Senate): Thanks for the “update” you mailed to your constituents, but the timing is suspect. It should have been labeled as a campaign advertisement, don’t you think?• Sandi Harpring’s recent “tweet” on Twitter made me smile: “Can’t go to Ohio without breakfast @BobEvansFarms, made me think of @RussLemmon.”• You know, you don’t realize how much of the local traffic is related to kids being in school … until school is out for the year.

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what is a regular feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

Given her position (regional executive director of the American Red Cross), I figured Sarah Tippet Ruwe’s college degree was in marketing and/or public relations. Not even close. She graduated from Purdue with a degree in computer science. She minored in chemistry. She later earned a master’s degree in computer science from Rensselaer Polytech Institute. If she were a guy, I would have jokingly made references to horn-rimmed glasses and a pocket protector. But she must have read my mind. “I was not a nerd,” she said, “but I was always conscientious

about studying.” In 1972, she was the valedictorian of her high school graduating class in Greenwich, Connecticut. Sarah grew up in Wisconsin. She’s a big fan of the Green Bay Packers – her brother still owns season tickets, and she will be going to a game this fall. (Trivia: In the 1960s, she went to Sunday School with quarterback Bart Starr’s kids.) “I’m a Cheesehead,” she said, using the term you

associate with the NFL team’s loyal fans. After college, Sarah lived in Connecticut, Maine and California. She and her late husband, Terry Ruwe, moved here in 2002. Her mother, Helen Tippet, has lived here since ’94. What’s been her most vivid memory during her 14 years with the Red Cross? As you might expect, it’s the back-to-back hurricanes in 2004, Frances and Jeanne. Specifically, she remembers her reaction when she heard the tracking had Jeanne headed toward Vero Beach. “Oh, my God,” she said. “It’s happening again.”

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

Indian River County had nearly $171 million in revenue last year. Of that amount, $76.6 million was from property taxes (by far the No. 1 source of revenue). The county’s gasoline tax accounted for $3.6 million in revenue. The tourist tax accounted for $2.2 million.

Fun factsTop 500 countdown

All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com

233. “Miracles”(1975) Jefferson Starship Memory: The album (“Red Octopus”) was the first cassette I ever ordered from the late, great RCA Music Club.

232. “Soak Up the Sun”(2002) Sheryl CrowMemory: Such an upbeat song.

231. “For the Good Times”(1970) Ray PriceMemory: Yet another song that was drilled into my head by my hometown radio station! It’s a classic, though.
