Places in the Lagoon: Spratt Point and Creek are in Sebastian. Fritz Island can be seen by driving or walking over the Barber Bridge and looking north. Fritz Ulrich came from Germany to Indian River about 1883. He filed his naturalization papers in 1884 and in 1885 he was living near Robert Spratt. He is listed as a civil engineer. By the 1890s, he had made a name for himself. The American Angler (1894) reports Fritz Ulrich had a yacht called “Ella” and it was “twenty-five feet in length and ten-foot breadth of beam. Fritz was for hire for two dollars per day or for three dollars if two passengers are aboard. He was a good cook and an intelligent person. One can live well aboard this boat as at the average hotel.” The Scientific American (1896) states “Mr. Fritz Ulrich, is a German of more than ordinary intelligence, who has spent the last fifteen years dreaming his life away among the birds

and animals of the Indian River. They were all his friends. The panthers knew his voice and answered him from the wilderness, and the owls came from their hiding places and flew about him to his call and the little lizards fed from his hand.” He was unmarried until 1902. He married a widower in Georgiana, Brevard County. In 1909, it was obvious that Mr. and Mrs. Ulrich were

socially the hit of the community when they bought a new phonograph (a Victor). They also discovered the records broke easily in the mail. In addition, he was an officer in the Rockford Automobile Club. Fritz Ulrich died 1925 and is buried in Georgiana. The island is not available to the public. More about Spratt another time.

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for March Madness to commence:

• It looks like Vero Beach’s main post office is going to remain downtown. There had been rumblings the main post office would be moved to the K-Mart plaza, in the 1500 block of U.S. 1, when the lease for the downtown building expires on Sept. 30. However, City Manager Jim O’Connor believes an agreement has been reached for the main post office to stay on 13th Avenue. But it’s not without some “sticker shock” for the U.S. Postal Service. The proposed agreement, which O’Connor hopes to present to City Council in April, has the annual rent going from $15,301 annually to $120,744. “We don’t want to be a landlord,” O’Connor said he told negotiators for the post office. “We have been a landlord at

the diesel plant, and it’s a fiasco.” If the agreement falls through, and the postal service vacates the building, O’Connor said the city will try to sell it. Some preliminary work was done in that regard, just in case. “There appeared to be a market for the purchase of the building,” he said.• After working with the state for years, trying to make it happen, Ruth Stanbridge experienced a sense of satisfaction last week when the marker for Fort Vinton – which, for years, had been on eastbound State Road 60 just east of 66th Avenue – was moved closer to the actual site of the fort, about 122nd Avenue. (There’s a photo on LemmonLines.com.)• Reader Tom Harmody sent an email several weeks ago asking if I knew the story behind a large object in the vicinity of 82nd Avenue and 42nd Street. up empty in my inquiries, Richard Granata volunteered to investigate. I did a double-take when I saw Granata’s photo – it looks like a giant bowling pin. Turns out it’s a transponder for the Vero Beach airport. “Let me know if you have any other undercover assignments,” Granata quipped.• Attention, nature lovers: Check out veroscreecher.com and get a live stream of what’s happening inside the nest of screech owls. John Mapel, who monitors the webcam, reports the only activity going on now is from 7:30 to 8 p.m., when a male enters the box and calls in an attempt to attract his girlfriend. In a typical year, eggs will hatch in the nest in late April or early May. It’s like Reality TV, only without the drama.• Two weeks ago, the “Just Wondering” list on page 3, indicated Florida Power & Light had the highest taxable value of property in the county – more than $104 million. Jan White wondered why we included a photo of the Vero

Beach power plant, as it’s owned by the city. Um … good catch, Jan!• There’s a new No. 2 on the list of most-attended shows ever at Riverside Theatre. “West Side Story,” which ended its run on Sunday, moved past “South Pacific” (2013-14 season) and now is second behind “42nd Street” (2009-10 season), according to Oscar Sales, Riverside Theatre’s marketing director. Sales said if season-ticket sales for next season are any indication, then “A Chorus Line” could easily crack the Top 5.• So I’m having lunch with Rosie Livings at the Smokehouse BBQ Grill on Tuesday, and we each ask server Holly Tuinman for the check. We’re both insistent, which makes it tough on Holly. Holly decides to give the check to Rosie. Perplexed, I asked Holly why I lost the tie-breaker. “Have you ever had Rosie mad at you?” she said. “Ah, OK,” I said with a laugh. “I get it now.”

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know. Maryanne DiMarzo is a former chief human resources officer for a company with 14,500 employees. She was a founding officer of Avaya Inc., a telecommunications company that spun off from Lucent Technologies in 2000. She retired in ’06 to live the life of leisure in Vero Beach. At least that’s what she envisioned. She and Amy Acker, a former Avaya executive, started a consulting business. Their focus is leadership development. “It was supposed to be a hobby, but I’ve managed to work full-time at it – which wasn’t the plan,” she said. Climbing your way up the corporate ladder requires a different level of commitment in today’s world. Technology has changed the way we approach our jobs.

“It has created a 24/7 mentality in corporate,” she said. “It just never stops – and you have to be willing to accept that.” So, what does she look for in a prospective employee? “It depends on what the job is,” she said, “but I like to see if I’m dealing with a learner. Someone with an agility to them.”

Maryanne comes from a close-knit family. Her brother, Jim DiMarzo, is a local Realtor. Her mother, Dolly Costarino, lives at Indian River Estates. Growing up, she learned from her father “to see the world is full of possibilities.” “And from my mother, I learned to claim them.” At 63, Maryanne is glad she’s able to spend time with her mother and brother. “I can’t get away from work, but at least I’m near my family,” she said.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

434. “Go All the Way”(1972) The RaspberriesMemory: As a freshman in high school, I found myself singing along without really grasping the meaning of the lyrics.

433. “You and Me”(1977) Alice CooperMemory: I was never a big fan of Mr. Cooper’s boa-constrictor schtick, but this ballad was a good fit for his voice.

432. “Eve of Destruction”(1965) Barry McGuireMemory: This song with such powerful lyrics helps keep things in perspective. That is, the world has been “on the brink” for 50 years.

In 2014, the 15-member Indian River County Sheriff’s Office SWAT (Special Weapons and Tatics) team served 21 high-risk search warrants, handled three dignitary protection details and two high-risk prisoner escort details.
