In the late 1870s, the area of the barrier island and smaller islands around it became known as Indian River Narrows. A physician writing in 1879 described the locale by saying, “Pelican Island is the first of a series of islands forming the Narrows ...” The Narrows offered attractive sites for early settlers. John LaRoche, a farmer who arrived in 1880, subdivided and named the 300-acre John LaRoche’s Island, or John’s Island. He selected the island for farming and for its shortest route to the mainland. A post office opened there in 1892 named for the Reams brothers who invested heavily in island real estate at that time. They were among 12 to 15 families that first settled the island. A school began there in 1893. In the 1900s there were 200 residents. Reams gave land on the island for two churches, both Baptist. A cemetery containing the graves of early settlers remains on John’s Island.

In 1925, people deserted the island and moved to the mainland because of the railroad and employment opportunities other than farming. The area reverted to its natural jungle state. In 1953, developer Fred Tuerk, a one-time president of the Chicago Stock Exchange, bought the island, and assembled the 3,000

surrounding acres. The town of Indian River Shores began. In 1969, Tuerk’s heirs sold the 3,000-acre estate to Edwin Llwyd Ecclestone, who 10 years prior founded and developed Lost Tree Village in North Palm Beach. In 1971, John’s Island became the first club with two 18-hole golf courses in Florida. Today it is a 1,650-acre high-end exclusive island community with homes placed in ways to preserve old oak trees.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for ESPN reporter Britt McHenry to eat a few slices of humble pie:

• Knowing how much Barry Shapiro loves having a business in downtown Vero Beach, it was kind of sad to see the message on the sign in front of Lighthouse Art and Framing. The sign lets passers-by know about the “Lost Our Lease sale” going on inside. Shapiro will be closing the store, located at the corner of 14th Avenue and 19th Street, at the end of April. He had hoped to move the business elsewhere in the downtown area, but he couldn’t find a suitable location. He thought he had found a place on Old Dixie Highway, but the deal fell through. “The writing is on the wall. It’s time to go,” he said. “There’s an old Zen proverb, ‘Follow the horse in the direction it’s going.’ So, I’m going to follow it.”

Shapiro, 64, moved Lighthouse Art and Framing to its current location in 2010. (When he bought the business in ’09, it was located on 17th Street.) “At this stage in life, I’m looking for peace and an ‘unstressful’ lifestyle – and things here were getting very stressful,” he said. Shapiro said the business “was never very profitable” and during slow periods, he was not in a position to pay himself. But he loved being a part of the city’s growing Art District. “I want to see it as a cultural center,” Shapiro said of downtown. “I think it has a very bright future.” Shapiro said events such as the First Friday Gallery Stroll have been welcome additions. “It’s been great for business,” he said. “It introduced people

to art who might not have been all that interested before.” By the way, the last gallery exhibit for Lighthouse Art Framing features Shapiro’s own work. Included is a painting of a former girlfriend that he did in 1971. When I raised an eyebrow at the painting, he made me laugh with his comment. “Maybe that’s why she didn’t stay my girlfriend,” he said. Stop in and see Shapiro’s collection for yourself. It’s a fitting farewell for one of downtown’s biggest cheerleaders. • What a season it has been for Riverside Theatre. The best one yet, in fact. “It was a record-setting year,” said Oscar Sales, the director of marketing. “Not only were the majority of performances for ‘Crazy For You’ and ‘West Side Story’ sold out (or near sellouts), but ‘West Side Story’ was the first show in the theatre’s history to sell over $1 million in tickets.”• Prediction from Supervisor of Elections Leslie Swan: The number of active registered voters in Indian River County

will top 100,000 before the Presidential Preference Primary on March 15, 2016. (Right now, there are about 98,100.)• If you’re interested in lending a helping hand, you might want to check out the Indian River County Day of Service, which is scheduled for April 25. More info: www.ircdayofservice.org.• Have you read any of the books listed on page 3? They’re the most circulated books at the library during the past five years. Some trivia, compliments of Mary Snyder, the county’s director of library services: Each of the top four books on the list has been checked out more than 1,700 times.• In this space last week, I mentioned Cumberland Farms “members” were paying $2.14 for a gallon of gas in Sebastian (County Road 512 and Barber Street) and $2.44 in south county (Oslo Road and 27th Avenue). On April 13, the “Cumberland Gap” was down to 24 cents a gallon – $2.20 in Sebastian and the same $2.44 in south county.

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

Eva Moon doesn’t have a fleet of vehicles or a stable of drivers to help out during busy times. It’s just her and a Toyota Corolla. Yes, Eva’s Transport and Home Services is a no-frills operation. After working 12 years as a driver for Community Coach (a transportation service offered by the Senior Resource Association), Eva decided to go into business for herself. Eva, who was an all-district basketball player for Vero Beach High School in the 1970s, received what you might call a game-changing assist from her mother, Rita Richardson. Rita had a 2006 Corolla with 27,000 miles, and she gave it

to Eva to help her business get off the ground. That was back in January ’13 – the car now has 37,000 miles. Whether it’s driving someone to a doctor’s appointment in Sebastian or making an airport run (West Palm Beach, Orlando or Melbourne), Eva loves the time she spends behind the wheel. “I just love the ‘people’ part of it … and I love to drive,” she said. “It’s a perfect thing for me.”

Even if it means having to be available 24/7 to drive someone to or from an airport. She has taken someone to the Orlando airport as early as 2:30 a.m. and picked up someone there as late as midnight. I found her rates for airport runs to be surprising low. (For prices, call her at 589-0635.) So, what did she learn from running her own business? “I’m stronger than I thought I was,” she said. “I can deal with the situations better than I thought I could.”
