Theatre Plaza, also known over the years as Florida Theatre and Vero Theatre, had a starring role in the creation of Indian River County. It opened as the 800-seat Vero Theatre on Oct. 14, 1924 and was the city’s first motion-picture theater. It showed “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” that day. The architect for the Mediterranean Revival-style theater at 2036 14th Ave., was F.H. Trimble, a Central Florida architect from 1900 into the 1920s, who also designed The Fellsmere School. The theater was a two-story, flat-roofed building with parapet and walls finished in white stucco. Back then, Vero Beach was part of St. Lucie County. The theater became the center of a fight in 1924 to carve a new county – Indian River – because a blue law (restricting some

Sunday activities for religious standards) prohibited people from watching films on Sunday. Gov. John Martin created Indian River County in the theater in May 1925. The theater closed in 1985 when other theaters opened nearby. The last film shown was “Desperately Seeking Susan”. In 1989, Bob Brackett bought and renovated the building. He had worked

as an usher at the theater in 1947. It opened in 1991 as Theatre Plaza housing businesses on the first floor and apartments on the second floor, and is the same use today. A plaque on a bench outside honors Brackett as “mentor, partner, friend.” The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on before finalizing your list for Santa:

• When Vinny Piazza told me about the woman who lives in a Jeep, my jaw dropped in disbelief. He says he talks with her occasionally and she is very pleasant. “You should interview her,” he said. “It might make for a good Christmastime story.” Intrigued, I followed his directions on how to find her. Carrie L. Johnson does, indeed, live in a 1998 Jeep Cherokee. She’ll turn 77 on Friday (Dec. 12). I wanted to feel sorry for her, but she wouldn’t let me go there. “I’m happy,” she said. “I really am.” Her Jeep is packed to the point where the only available space is the driver’s seat. All of her life’s belongings are in this vehicle.

She was living in a complex for senior citizens before deciding to leave a little more than a year ago. She did not like how residents were being treated there. Carrie has lived in Indian River County since the age of 3. She has no kids. She last saw her brother, who lives in South Carolina, and sister, who lives in Fort Pierce, earlier this year at her cousin’s funeral in Gifford. She spent Thanksgiving alone. (“I sat over there and read a book,” she said.) Why not try a different place for seniors? “I asked the Lord,” she said. “If He sees fit for me to move, He’ll tell me.” Carrie receives $600 a month from Social Security. She also earns $100 per week for cleaning an office building.

LEMMON DROPS: Despite living in a Jeep, woman retains positive outlook on life

Russ Lemmon

Page 5: Lemmon Lines #9

“I’m a working woman,” she said. “I like taking care of myself.” She goes Bible study every Tuesday and Thursday, and attends New Life church (28th Avenue and 44th Street) every Sunday. “As long as that Man up there is taking care of me, I’m never bored,” she said. I’ll tell you, talking with Carrie will make you appreciate what you have in life. Perhaps that’s why Vinny Piazza suggested I talk with her before Christmas.• A Vero Beach landmark, the Patio restaurant, is on track to reopen around New Year’s Eve. Here’s hoping Bill Brown can make a go of it, because if he can’t, the restaurant may have used up all of its lives. This will be its fifth life in six years.• Two events for those who appreciate history: 1) “St. Lucia Day” at the Hallstrom House (1723 Old Dixie Highway SW) is scheduled for Saturday, 3 to 6 p.m.; 2) “Christmas 1914”

returns to King’s Baptist Church (3235 58th Ave.) on the evenings of Dec. 11-14 and Dec. 18-21.• I had to laugh when I opened the latest newsletter from the Sebastian Area Historical Society. Inside, Bud O’Neill taped some coupons for Bob Evans.• Do you know there is a “Rebel Road” in Indian River County? Neither did I until Ron Rennick Jr., a local Realtor, noted he was selling a house and saw 5th Street SW was listed that way in a survey. Pam Cooper, who works at the main library, emailed me a copy of the 1933 Drainage District map that had alternate names for many streets. For example, 12th Street was called Rosedale Road and 16th Street was Rosewood Road. For some reason, only one of these alternate names stuck. The one for 9th Street SW – which is better known as Oslo Road.• I know it’s going to turn out OK, but the construction on U.S. 1 south of Oslo Road is a real mess. It’s hard to see any progress being made. It is going to turn out OK … right?

The search for wonderful and amazing treasures here in Indian River County continues …

• Sebastian: A 12-foot butterfly. Who has ever heard of such a thing? Hanging overhead in the Beyond Useless Boutique (1125 U.S. 1), this giant insect looks down guarding some amazing unique gifts. Some will make you laugh, some can adorn your body, while others sparkle and dazzle. You’ll want to return, just to see what you missed on your first visit! Family owned, these store owners, who live upstairs, can fill you in on the uniqueness of each gift. This holiday season, you won’t struggle to find a most unusual gift.

• Vero Beach: Ever heard of a dog laughing? Well, at The Laughing Dog Gallery (2910 Cardinal Drive) you can find creative, imaginative, and amazing art work. It really isn’t a

laughing matter – however, some of the items there will make you smile. An award-winning place, you will find art in rugs and handcrafted glass, to wall clocks – and more! A Border Collie wall clock is on my holiday shopping list!

• Fellsmere: A parrot “hello”? You’ll be greeted by a very friendly one at Ditch 13 Gallery and Gifts (46 N. Broadway St.). This is a place to shop for one-of-a-kind gifts. Upon entering, a shopper will find a small store loaded with beautiful and well-crafted items – all by area

artisans. Books about the area are also available for the history buff. But my favorite is the carved wooden butterfly – I don’t think it’s related to the butterfly at the aforementioned Beyond Useless Boutique. But you never know.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

476. “Bad Day” (2006) Daniel PowterMemory: It’s easy to relate to this song, no? I’m kind of surprised this has been Daniel Powter’s only hit. 475. “Little Deuce Coupe” (1963) Beach BoysMemory: “Well I’m not bragging, babe, so don’t put me down, but I’ve got the fastest set of wheels in town.” 474. “Smooth”(1999) Santana and Rob ThomasMemory: Some musical pairings don’t work (Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, for example), but this one did.
