It will be 121 years ago in April that a British steamship ran aground and was stranded on an offshore limestone reef while passing along the coast of what would later be known as Humiston Park in Vero Beach. The cargo steamer was built in 1884 and renamed from Numida SS to Breconshire SS when bought by D.J. Jenkins & Co. It was 300 feet long and 37 feet wide. Robert Taylor commanded a crew of 24 men. It traveled from England to several Mediterranean ports and then to New York. In spring 1894, it headed to Tampa to pick up an unknown cargo. Taylor was not familiar with Florida waters and his charts did not include the coast for 20 miles south of Cape Canaveral. The ship hit the reef in morning darkness and went to the ocean bottom. The crew escaped the sinking ship and stayed at the

nearby Bethel Creek House of Refuge, a Coast Guard station, for three days. They returned to London, where the captain was judged to be negligent and suspended for six months. The Breconshire was valued at $75,000. It still rests about a quarter mile east of the Ocean Grill restaurant dining room.

About 15 years ago you could see a boiler of the ship sitting high above the waves. But the salt water corroded the metal, and the boiler now is closer to the ocean floor. Some of it still is visible during low tide. It’s a popular destination for divers, and is noted on tripadvisor.com as being best visited by kayak or stand-up paddle board. The wreck is said to rest in 15 to 20 feet of water; its twisted remains are covered with marine growth. There’s good lobstering and spear fishing around it.

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Florida State football fans to digest the humble pie served by Oregon:

• All signs are pointing toward this being the best tourist season in recent years. Always a reliable barometer is the number of people walking along Ocean Drive. There has been a noticeable increase in foot traffic. Take it from Paul Castraberti, owner of The Lemon Tree restaurant, the season is off to a great start. “So far, we have had five record-breaking days (since Christmas),” he said. “I’ve never seen the beachside so busy.” Casey Steil, the owner of Casey’s Place, agrees with Castraberti’s assessment. “It’s been unbelievable,” said Steil, who opened the outdoor restaurant in 1981. “This was our busiest December ever.” “Ever?” I interjected. “Yes, ever,” he said.

Steil says he hasn’t figured the totals for December yet, but he estimated business was up “a minimum of 10 percent, and maybe even 15 percent.” The great thing is, we’re just getting started. “February, March and April are, by far, the busiest months,” Steil said. He says Costa d’Este – the resort owned by singer Gloria Estefan and her husband, Emilio – and the Vero Beach Hotel & Spa deserve a lot of credit for the increase in tourist dollars. It’s been so busy that, for the first time, Casey’s Place will be opening on Sundays in a few weeks. You can just feel the energy. It’s going to be a great year. As Steil said, “The whole country is looking at (the weather in) Florida and saying, ‘Wow.’ ”• Continuing with the same theme, real estate sales are

humming too. I had to laugh over how Jim Daly, a local Realtor, spent the final day of 2014. He had a personal record of five closings in one day, with sales totaling $1.091 million. And he was still able to make it to Billy Joel’s New Year’s Eve concert in Orlando – a special treat for his 82-year-old mother.• Of the 1,200-plus columns I wrote for the Press Journal, one of my favorites had to do with Margarette Koplin trying to find a home for a six-story birdhouse built by her late husband. She gave it to the Grand Harbor Audubon Society in 2012 … and the organization has certainly lived up to its end of the deal. Deb Fletcher reported the “bird condo” – built for purple martins – is now in place for another season.• How cool is it that Eve Plumb – you know, Jan on “The Brady Bunch” – is appearing in the play “Crazy for You” at the Riverside Theatre?• JP Matty’s, a popular restaurant in Sebastian, is starting

to make the transition to its new name, Café in Paradise. Owners Wanda and Paul Simmons kept the JP Matty’s name for the first few months because they didn’t want to confuse seasonal residents returning to the area. They’re keeping JP Matty’s on the marquee for a little while longer, but everything inside will reflect the new name. By the way, Wanda and Paul formerly owned Paradise Ice Cream in Sebastian. Yes, the former New Jersey residents really believe this place is like paradise.• OK, I admit I never thought I’d see gas for less than $2 a gallon again in Indian River County.• Confession: When I went to C.J. Cannon’s to meet Dale O’Brien, who is featured in the “Meet me at Table 51” feature on page 6, I thought I was meeting a man. When I found out Dale is a woman, Lois Cappelen poked fun at me. Then, Lois told me the story about her mother-in-law renting a house in the early 1960s from Clyde Steel. You guessed it – Clyde was a woman.

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know. She was drinking tea. Kind of fitting, because Dale O’Brien and I were meeting to discuss a family-history project inspired by the popular TV show “Downton Abbey.” She didn’t start watching the British drama series – which follows the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and its servants in the post-Edwardian era – until Season 3. But she could instantly relate. That’s because her mother and aunt lived on a Downton Abbey-esque estate in England from the mid-1920s to 1940. It’s a remarkable “rags to riches” tale, as the sisters previously lived in a Chicago orphanage. Their great-aunt and great-uncle, the Marchioness and Marquis of Huntly, brought both girls to England. Dale’s mother lived on the countryside estate, called Orton

Hall, from age 7 to 22. Her mother and aunt were forced to return to the United States after the London bombing in 1940. “They lived the life for 15 or 16 years,” Dale said. “It was an elegant lifestyle.” Dale, who lives in Sebastian, wanted to make sure this part of family history was preserved for future

generations, so she created a website titled “Life with Auntie B” (that’s what her mother, who died in 1985, called the Marchioness of Huntly, Isabelle Gordon). The website address: dcobinfl.wordpress.com. “I wanted the family to be aware of the history,” Dale said. Dale has made two trips to see Orton Hall. In 1967, when she went with her mother, it had been turned into a school for girls run by the government. The next time, in 1998, it was a Best Western hotel and conference center. Fans of “Downton Abbey” will be fascinated by the website. Check it out.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 461. “Dream On” (1976) AerosmithMemory: At the time (senior year in high school), this was a song by just another up-and-coming band. Who knew Aerosmith would still be relevant today? 460. “Come to My Window” (1994) Melissa EthridgeMemory: A great song, full of emotion. Remember the video, with Juliette Lewis as a suicidal mental patient? 459. “Please Come to Boston” (1974) Dave LogginsMemory: Whenever I heard this song on the radio, I tried to duplicate the “aching” in the singer’s voice. Failed every time.

Attendance at Vero Beach’s three lifeguarded beach parks (Jaycee, Humiston and South Beach) was 652,229 in 2014. That’s an increase of more than 50,000 from the previous year. Attendance was 600,880 in 2013. Even with a spike in attendance in ’14, the overall number fell well short of the 778,060 visitors in 2012.
