unaudited financial results for the quarter and six months ended

30 June 2014

Lotte Chemical Pakistan Ltd’s (LCPL) editorial team is pleased to present

the second edition of the 2014 newslet-ter. The second quarter of the year kicked off with the election of the Company’s new Board of Directors. We congratulate Mr. Changgyou Kim, Mr. Jung Neon Kim, Mr. Hyun Chul Park, Mr. Hun Ki Lee, Mr. Oh Hun Im, Mr. M Qasim Khan, Mr Per-vaiz Akhtar and Mr. Itaqbal Mehdi on their successful election as LPCL Board members. While we welcome the new Board of Directors, we also bid farewell to Mr. Asif Saad (former Chief Executive LPCL) who opted for early retirement af-ter 22 years of service at the company.

The eventful summer of 2014 has al-lowed employees of LCPL to engage in various competitive activities such as the Annual Table Tennis tournament, tal-ent competition and the LCPL summer festival. Employees of the company also celebrated Earth Day where over 200 new trees were planted at the plant site. These activities have not only promoted a healthier lifestyle but also allowed employees of LCPL to interact with col-leagues from other departments.

The Total Production Management (TPM) activities also continued well into 2014 with positive response from all par-ticipants. Results from these activities have been remarkable so far.

Our ERT (Emergency Response Team) personnel at the plant must be commend-ed for their heroic 4-hour effort to subdue a fire that broke out in a nearby industrial textile unit. This event highlights the high standards of HSE and a culture of com-munity involvement maintained at LCPL.

Lastly, the editorial team would like to thank you for your support and encour-agement. It there are any suggestions, please feel free to contact any of the edi-torial team members.

a lunch was arranged on 29 April 2014 at the LCPL plant site to bid farewell to Mr. Asif Saad, former Chief Execu-

tive LCPL, who opted for an early retirement from the Com-pany.

Mr. Asif Saad’s association with the ICI Group and LCPL encompasses 22 years. In 2002, he joined the Company as a Commercial Manager and was in-strumental in reshaping the Com-mercial function and in the devel-opment of existing and new key business relationships. In 2008, Mr. Saad was appointed Chief Execu-tive. Under his leadership the Com-pany set new standards of sterling performance and self-sufficiency.

The large number of staff pres-ent on the occasion was indicative of the popularity of Mr. Asif Saad amongst his colleagues. The lunch included a memorable photograph-

ic presentation, ‘Journey through Time’, prepared by Mr. Hu-mair Ijaz, while Mr. Waheed Ullah Khan read a poem reflecting on the relationship of Mr. Asif with the LCPL team.

We shall all miss him and wish him the very best in life, which he so richly deserves.

Lotte Funkar and the Summer Festival – 2014LCPL endeavors to engage employees as part of profes-

sional engagement by organizing interactive social events. The core philosophy behind such gatherings is to enhance em-ployee relations, team building and interaction. As in previous years, similarly, this time a Summer Festival was held on 24 June 2014 at the Camp Area.

The event began with a swimming competition consisting of knock-out rounds among 12 swimmers. Mr. Nasir Ali won the swimming competition, whereas Mr. Faizan Anwar man-aged to grab second position. Mr. Jung Kim distributed prizes to both the winners.

LCPL also measures its performance in terms of intangible assets such as cul-ture, skill, competence, motivation and social interaction between employees. With the aim of identifying inhouse ar-tistic talent, Lotte Funkar was formed. Under the guidance of Mr. Humair Ijaz,

the Lotte Funkar team comprises Tariq Mehdi, Ayesha Moin, Amir Azam, Abdul Shafi Shaikh, Mansoor Ahsun Khan and Nafees Ahmed.

At the Summer Festival, Lotte Funkar singers sang old Urdu songs and ghazals with Mr. Mansoor accompanying on piano. The Lotte Funkar activities were met with an apprecia-tive round of applause.

At the end of the swimming competition and Lotte Funkar, the mango party commenced. Quiz questions regarding the history of mangoes were posed to the audience, and winners were awarded crates of mangoes. This was followed by a man-

go juice drinking challenge. In the end, all Lotte employees were served with a variety of mangoes as well as mango ice cream.

It was a memorable day and we thank Lotte for supporting social events that bring us all together. a

after the successful com-pletion of 5S activities on

the first block, the Small Group Teams started 5S activities on the second as-signed block, keeping a single identical ambi-tion of creating a self sustaining culture which brings about a neat, clean and efficient work-place.

5S activities on the second block were started by each SGT on 5 March 2014 and were completed on 18 May 2014. An overall performance review after the completion of the second block shows that SGTs raised 749 MWRs in total for the second block with the view to im-prove plant visualization. All unnecessary things were removed from the area and some great efforts were put in to improve floor space utilization.

Number of OPLs identified and ques-tions raised has been increased which indicate that enthusiasm of SGTs has in-creased. It is expected that performance of SGTs will further improve in the re-maining blocks.

on 15 June 2014, a heavy fire broke out in a nearby in-dustry, textile unit situated at Port Qasim Site, Minimum

man power and emergency resources were available on their site due to weekend, The heavy fire engulfed most of the work area. In the hour of need, the textile unit management request-ed LCPL to support fire fighting. One fire fighting team along with fire tender was sent for support by LCPL. The Emergency Response Team (ERT) responded in an efficient and cou-rageous manner & supported for a period of 4 hours to help extinguish the fire. The Management of the textile unit acknowledged LCPL’s ERT support and awarded a letter of appreciation to the team.

safety has always remained the top most priority at LCPL; the rigorously implemented systems, the audits, and the

HSE team is a part of the safety culture that sets us apart from other industries.

The planning section has taken a major step to-wards implementation of the system at the grass root level. In collaboration with HSE department, the plan-ning section now regularly holds bi-monthly safety sessions with contractual staff during morning as a tool box talk.

These sessions are a means to enhance the awareness of our teams regarding the RCMS procedures and an effort to-wards providing an overall grooming in area of safe working practices. They also encourage confidence building and pro-vide opportunity to highlight any issues presently being faced.

Intent is to bridge the gap between workers and safety of-ficers, encouraging them to heed the advice being given dur-

ing an audit, hence leading towards ingraining safety habits in their work practices and developing a safer working environ-

ment for the employees.a

plant outage due to breakdown mainte-nance is detrimental to the production

process. Mechanical maintenance team always strives to ensure that any developing problem

is nipped in the bud. One such event occurred when leakage of water was observed from the

Cooling Water Return line of E1-117D, 4th intercool-er of PAC. The nipple of the vent valve had developed cracks due to which cooling water was being ejected from the line.

The maintenance team came up with an innovative solution to the issue. Locally developed plates were installed on site and clamped together by means of bolts. The job was performed with the plant in opera-tion and the clamp proved to be successful in fixing the leakage.

a

the mechanical maintenance team at LCPL has consis-tently set a trend of taking bold initiatives to solve

mechanical issues of the plant. One such trend was set for the rectification of process leakage from the downstream flange of a manual valve installed on the downstream of LCV-1286 near Solvent DH Column. The rectification task was made difficult due to the absence of any bypass or isolation mechanism to stop the back flow of process. Under these highly dangerous circumstances, the mechanical team daringly set upon the task of replacing the flange gasket online to fix the leakage. Unfamiliar Task Assessment was performed and stringent safety measures were observed during the performance of the job. Com-plete support was extended by the HSE and Operations teams to ensure safe completion of the task. Thanks to the expertise and teamwork displayed by the maintenance team, the gasket was successfully replaced and a potential plant outage was averted.

two Fire Tenders are available with Emergency Response Team to en-

sure timely response and to cover wide areas of emergency handling and pro-cess related services when and where required. The daily inspection and maintenance of both fire tenders en-sures continuous & ready availability for any emergency and res-cue operations.

Extensive leakage prob-lem observed from the foam tank of one of the fire tender. The vendor recommended 15 day unavailability of the Fire Tender with a significant cost for the repair mainte-nance of the same.

A thorough visit of the fire tender was done & as per Mr. Tariq Mehdi’s opinion it was decided to take an in-house initiative by preparing

& replacing the foam tank to rectify the concern within minimum time frame.

This task was assigned to Mr. Muhammad Ikram (Sub- En-gineer Workshop-1), Mr. Muhammad Nadeem Bhatti (Assistant Engineer Instru-mentation-Oxidation) & Mr.

Muhammad Jameel (ERT Leader) sup-ported by Mr. Syed Sheraz Ali (Instru-

ment Technician-II).The team worked efficiently

and replaced the foam tank and associated piping network successfully and brought the

fire tender in service within 4 days.

Thanks to the entire team and Mr. Tariq Mehdi (workshop & site develop-ment manager) for taking such cost saving initiatives. Thanks to Mr. Rizwan Ahmed (Assistant Manager General Affairs) as well for provid-ing support in arrangement of alternate resources from nearby industry during the entire maintenance time pe-riod.

the temperature control room is an

essential part of the En-gineering Stores for the safe storage of items re-quiring controlled tem-perature conditions. This year Engineering Stores took the initiative to en-hance the temperature control storage capac-ity in order to accommo-date increased inventory items for Cogen. In order

to ensure minimum cost and effective use of space the stores team converted old records by scanning

the documents and storing them as electronic data. This initiative not only released additional space for the

temperature controlled storage, but also improved the old record files archive. The entire activity was completed independently by the Stores team within a three month period.

Special thanks to the Stores team members: Muhammad Tasleem, Azharuudin, Muhammad Wali, Naseer Ahmad, Muhamamd Salman & Rashid Hashmi for completing this enhancement job under guidance from Inayat Umer.

a

the Co-Generation plant provides energy to the electrical drives

of the base plant. Water wash activi-ties are carried out at the gas turbine almost every month for efficient op-eration. The activity took twelve hours to complete and during that time the plant energy requirements were furnished through K-Electric.

During the water wash activity, the turbine is taken offline and thus the process energy require-ments are met through unreliable KE grid rendering the process vulnerable to frequent turbulence and power dips. The cost charged by KE is substantially higher than the cost incurred in self generation. Additionally, steam is also produced from HRSG re-sulting in the reduction of load on the utility boilers, taking one boiler offline.

Team Co-Gen realizes its responsibility towards economical and reliable operations. The Co-Gen team took the challenge to reduce the water wash time. Through deliberation and effective time man-agement we were able to reduce the water wash time by four hours resulting in substantial saving in the OPEX and ensuring reliable operations.

Efficient Orderingverification of an RFQ for Overhaul 2015 led to the issue

of alternate item code balance. That particular ordering was perfect in all regards, except that a material on the list was already available in an alternate item code and allowing it to proceed would have contributed towards over-ordering.

Considering the time constraint, it was not pos-sible to manually check every item code for an al-ternate code. The Planning Team came up with the proposal to deal with this issue through a Cutomized

Report, and help was sought from IT. Afterwards, the provi-sion of alternate item code balance was included in a PR An-

nexure report. This added feature now provides a glimpse of any balance in the alternate code, and hence highlighting

any undue ordering. This initiative has helped the Planning Section in

minimizing time spent on RFQ verification. This sincere effort is indeed a step towards meeting the CE’s target

of 15% saving.a

Instrument Air Header Circuits are considered most critical backbone of

any industry. We had been facing foul-ing and scaling issue (cooling water / Process side) in our existing Instrument Air Compressors Cooler Bundles due to design gap aggravated by deteriorat-ing quality of raw water since commis-sioning of the plant. Fouling and Scaling of cooling water circuit cooler bundle was caused by the unavailability of compressors. Due to fre-quent chemical cleanings, yielding high maintenance costs, shortened bundle life and in some cases we had to bear Production losses. Tech-nical team Utilities took the challenge and decided to re-solve the issue using existing resources of the plant. An in-novative idea was proposed

by the Technical team of water purification and use of a re-dundant cooling tower to en-sure increased operational life of cooler bundle of Instrument air compressor.

A trial was planned and executed with a temporary hardware change to

validate the predicted expecta-tions. The project was executed in the last week of June 2014

and initial observations were found to be in line with expecta-

tions. After consultation with vendor technical expertise project execution was done. The after effects of water pu-

rification on temporary basis forecasts reduction in opera-tional cost of compressor and increase its availability with minimum capital expenditure. On the other hand mainte-nance and chemical consump-tion costs reduction is also cascaded. This is a result of Technical Utilities team ef-forts along with coordination with Production, Workshop, Mechanical, Instrumentation Teams.

gTG Air Filter House comprises of some 448 filters. These filters are replaced

when the differential pressure across them reaches a limit and as a result, a large num-ber of unclean filters are removed. Recently, after such a replacement activity, Co-Gen plant had at its disposal 448 unclean filters. An initiative was taken at this point by the Co-Gen Mechanical Team to clean these fil-ters so that they could be used as back-up spares if required.

The straightforward way to clean the filters was to clean them manually using Instrument Air. However, after evaluating this option, the team concluded that this option was unsuitable as it required a lot of manpower and time. Co-Gen Mechani-

cal Team came up with another idea to build a semi-automatic air cleaning system that could significantly lower required re-

sources associated with filters cleaning activity. Workshop team

was consulted in this regard and a design was finalized. In-house fabrica-tion was started right away and the team succeeded in making a functional Filters Cleaning System.

This system has lowered the average filter cleaning time from 15-20 minutes to 2-3 minutes. Moreover, it can be easily op-erated by a single person, hence curtailing the need for extra manpower

a persistent leakage issue was observed on Oxidation Plant where PTA Mother Liquor

Slurry Filter FIL-213 had developed leakages that were harmful for plant integrity and safety. The inspection team reported that the existing filter housing had lost its material strength due to frequent repairs and needed to be replaced altogether. The issue was thoroughly investigated and the inadequacy of sup-ports on the drain piping was identi-fied as the major cause of recurrent

leakages. The recommendation to increase the thickness of the bottom plate was also put forward by the workshop team to increase the life of the new housing. The team performed admirably on this task and developed the com-

plete filter housing locally in a short period of time. The timely and efficient performance of the workshop and maintenance teams has resulted in the resolution of this chronic problem.

test Bench development for Critical g1-1209 Hv motors

the motors of G1-1209 pumps are considered to be the most critical

machines for smooth operations. These motors are high speed machines which drive the Sundye pumps carrying the main process slurry in purification plant. The production of PTA is also directly depen-dent on the operation of these motors. In case of unavailability of any of the motor, production will be affected.

It has been observed that when the motors are installed at the structure after overhauling / refurbishment work, the vibrations tend to go on higher side as compared to its test run. This issue was observed whenever a new G1-1209 motor was in-stalled. The test bench facility at the workshop can only test 400 volt motors and testing these motors do not yield the required results. A solution was required to test the motors on its actual running voltage in order to observe the motor behavior and also to rule out any issue with the motor foundation or alignment.

A motor test bench has been developed in-house and has been installed in the plant area near the G1-1209 motors. By installing the test bench, it is now possible to carry out the test run of the motors under actual running conditions. This idea was material-ized and implemented successfully by the effort of Mr. Muham-mad Kamran Khan and Mr. Khalil Ahmed Ansari who put in their best to complete the preparation and installation of this test bench in area.

So far this test bench has been used to ascertain the health of avrious repaired / refurbished motors for G1-1209 sundyne pumps and has helped in health verification of these motors. This concept of test bench installation in the area depicts the commit-ment and innovative approach of the electrical team which has helped in developing an indigenous solution to a chronic and re-peated issue of motor test run for HV motors particularly for G1-1209 motors.

on 17 June 2014, during the shutdown sequence of GTG, Gas Detector Sensors present inside GTG Tur-

bine Enclosure indicated the presence of Fuel-Gas. In-spection of entire Fuel-Gas System was carried out

that revealed the cause of the leakage to be ma-terial failure in one of the Manifold Rings. This was a critical finding and called for prompt action in order to avoid any unwanted extra

downtime. Realizing the importance of the situation, the Co-Gen Mechanical Team imme-

diately came into action and started to liaise with GTG Manufacturer to find a permanent solution to the issue. In parallel, spare of the failed part was ordered and its delivery process was expedited in collaboration with commercial team. After receiving the spare manifold, it was replaced with the failed one and several further checks were performed on the en-tire Fuel-Gas system as suggested by GTG manufacturer in order to ensure reliable health of the equip-ment. These actions resulted in rec-tification of the issue, and the dili-gence of Mechanical Maintenance Team and Commercial Team made all of it possible within a minimum time span.

the Press Filter FIL-707 is an integral part of the Catalyst Recovery Unit on Oxida-

tion Plant. The plate shifter mechanism of the filter encountered a problem that caused frequent operational disruptions. The shifter hook used to disengage inter-mittently due to aging of the original components of the shifter. The plant operators had to go through the trouble and hazard of manually operating the shifter. The mechanical maintenance team, exhibiting their engineering expertise, devised an ingenious solu-tion to the problem. The shifter was modified and a new mecha-nism was installed on both the press filter shifters that ensured the engagement of the shifter hook with the pin continuously. This initiative by the maintenance team solved a chronic problem that had been causing operational difficulties and hazards.

What is naegleria?

It is a single–celled (amoeba) living organism which is com-monly found in the warm, fresh waters of lakes, rivers and hot springs and soil. Only Naegleria fowleri infects people.

How does naegleria fowleri infect people?

People get infected with Naegleria fowleri when water containing this amoeba enters the body through the nose. This usually occurs when people go swimming or diving in warm fresh waters of pools, lakes and rivers. The amoeba, travels up the nose to the brain and destroys brain tissue.

One cannot be infected by drinking Naegleria fowleri-con-taminated water. Infection may also occur when Naegleria fowl-eri-contaminated water from other sources like inadequately chlorinated swimming pool water or heated and contaminated tap water enters the nose when people submerge their heads or perform religious ablutions e.g. vazoo, or use the contaminated water to irrigate their sinuses via the nose.

Where is naegleria fowleri found?

It is found all over the world. It has surfaced in Karachi this year and taken 10 lives so far. Naegleria fowleri is found in: » The warm fresh waters of lakes and rivers » Naturally hot water in hot springs » Warm water discharged from industrial plants » Naturally hot sources of drinking water » Poorly maintained, minimally chlorinated or un-chlorinated

water of swimming pools » Water Heaters – the amoeba grows best at high tempera-

tures up to 1150F or 460C and can survive for short periods at higher temperatures.

» Soil. The amoeba does not exist in salt water e.g. the ocean.

at what temperatures does naegleria fowleri cause infection?

As mentioned above the amoeba is a heat-loving microbe which grows best at high temperatures up to 1150F (460C) and can survive for short periods at even higher temperatures. It is less likely to be found in water as temperature lessens. However it can be found in lake or river sediment at temperatures well be-low the temperatures at which it exists in water.

What is naegleria fowleri’s source of food?

The amoeba eats other microbes like bacteria from the sedi-ment in lakes and rivers.

Can one get infected from a properly disinfected swim-ming pool?

No.

When do naegleria fowleri infections commonly occur?

Though infections are very rare, they commonly occur in the summer months of July, August, September and October when it is hot for prolonged periods resulting in water with higher tem-peratures and lower water levels.

Can infection spread from one person to another?

No.

What are the symptoms of the infection?

Naegleria fowleri causes primary amoebic meningoen-cephalitis (PAM), a brain infection resulting in the destruction

of brain tissue.Initial symptoms start 5 days (range 1-7 day) after infection.

Initial symptoms: » Headache, » Fever, » Nausea or vomiting.

Later symptoms: » Stiff neck, » Confusion, » Lack of attention to people and surroundings, » Loss of balance, » Seizures (fits), » Hallucinations.

Following the symptoms, the disease progresses rapidly and causes death usually within 5 days (range 1-12 days)

What is the mechanism of death?

Brain tissue is destroyed resulting in brain swelling and death.

What is the fatality rate of infected persons showing signs and symptoms?

The fatality rate is over 99%. 1 person out of 123 known in-fected persons in the USA from 1962-2011 have been known to survive.

Is there any treatment for people infected with the disease?

There is no consensus on any drug regime as all infections have been fatal, even when patients have been treated with the same drug combinations.

Diagnosis and detection

PAM and Naegleria Fowleri can be diagnosed in the lab by de-tecting: » The organisms in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), biopsy or

tissue specimens. » Naegleria fowleri nucleic acid in CSF, biopsy or tissue

specimens. » Naegleria fowleri antigen in CSF, biopsy or tissue speci-

mens. » Amoeba Culture.
