Priest: The Lord be with you. People : And with your spirit. Priest: Let us pray.

Collect of the Day

Priest: O Lord, from whom all good proceeds: Grant us the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may always think those things that are good, and by your merciful guidance may accomplish the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy spirit, one God, for ever and ever. People: Amen. The people sit.

First Reading: 2 Chronicles 20:2–9; 12; 14–22

2 Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, “A great multitude is coming against you from Edom, from beyond the sea; and, behold, they are in Hazazon-tamar” (that is, Engedi). 3 Then Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 And Judah assembled to seek help from the LORD; from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD. 5 And Jehosha-phat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, 6 and said, “O LORD, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you. 7 Did you not, our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it forever to the de-scendants of Abraham your friend? 8 And they have lived in it and have built for you in it a sanctuary for your name, say-ing, 9 ‘If disaster comes upon us, the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before this house and before you—for your name is in this house—and cry out to you in our affliction, and you will hear and save.’ 12 O our God, will you not execute judgment on them? For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” 14 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. 15 And he said, “Listen, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusa-

lem and King Jehoshaphat: Thus says the LORD to you, ‘Do

not be afraid and do not be dismayed at this great horde, for the battle is not yours but God's. 16 Tomorrow go down against them. Behold, they will come up by the ascent of Ziz. You will find them at the end of the valley, east of the wilderness of Jeruel. 17 You will not need to fight in this bat-tle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.’ Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Tomorrow go out against them, and the LORD will be with you.” 18 Then Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the LORD, worshiping the LORD. 19 And the Levites, of the Kohathites and the Korahites, stood up to praise the LORD, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice. 20 And they rose early in the morning and went out into the wilderness of Tekoa. And when they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in the LORD your God, and you will be established; believe his prophets, and you will succeed.” 21 And when he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to the LORD and praise him in holy attire, as they went before the army, and say,

“Give thanks to the LORD, for his steadfast love endures forever.”

22 And when they began to sing and praise, the LORD set an ambush against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir,

who had come against Judah, so that they were routed.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

The people stand to sing and remain standing for the Gospel.

10 I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the meekness and gentle-ness of Christ—I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away!— 2 I beg of you that when I am present I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some

who suspect us of walking according to the flesh. 3 For

though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our war-fare are not of the flesh but have divine power to de-stroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

The Psalm: 121:1–8 BPC p. 440

Reader and People: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 10:1–5

Levavi oculos

1 I will lift up my eyes unto the hills; * from whence comes my help?

2 My help comes from the Lord, * who has made heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot be moved, * and he who keeps you will not sleep.

4 Behold, he who keeps Israel * shall neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord himself is your keeper; * the Lord is your defense upon your right hand,

6 So that the sun shall not burn you by day, * neither the moon by night.

7 The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; * indeed, it is he who shall keep your soul.

8 The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in, * from this time forth for evermore.

The Holy Gospel: Mark 15:33–39

Priest: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. The people sit.

The Sermon: “The Battle Belongs to the Lord”, The Rev. Mike Moffitt Following today’s service, the sermon will be available on the church website: www.lightofchristva.org

33 And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36 And someone ran

and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and

gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 And the curtain of the tem-ple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the

Son of God!”

The Nicene Creed The people stand and affirm the creed with the priest.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, mak-er of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at

the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Words of Comfort

Priest: The Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. Nahum 1:7 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good… Romans 8:28

Confession of Sin

Priest and People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name.

Priest: Almighty God our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who

sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. People: Amen.

The Great ThanksgivingThe people remain standing.

Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit.

Priest: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord.

Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Priest: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord; who on the first day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archan-gels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus: Holy, Holy, Holy

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Priest and People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Prayer of Consecration

The people kneel or sit reverently.

Priest: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and when we had sinned against you and became subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent your only Son Jesus Christ into the world for our salvation. By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and dwelt among us. In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon the Cross and offered himself once and for all, that by his suffering and death we might be saved. By his resur-rection he broke the bonds of death, trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. As our great high priest, he ascended to your right hand in glory, that we might come with confidence before the throne of grace.

On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.”

Priest: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, Jesus Christ. Sanctify us also, that we may faithfully receive this holy sacrament, and be made one body with him, so that he may dwell in us and we in him. And bring us with all your saints into the fullness of your heavenly kingdom, where we shall see our Lord face to face. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. People: Amen.

Priest: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray:

Priest and People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Priest: The Gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

The Breaking of the Bread The priest breaks the consecrated Bread and says

Priest: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People: Therefore let us keep the feast.

Priest and People: Heavenly Father, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood of your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal Kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

The priest asks a blessing upon the people. The people stand and sing.
