Mission Statement: St. Francis of Assisi Parish is a Christ-centered family of believers, celebrating Christ alive in our lives through the inspiration of the Gospel, church teachings and traditions and the Sacraments.

We are sensitive to the spiritual and temporal needs of God’s people, acknowledging their uniqueness and dignity and are dedicated to reaching out and serving them through prayer,

liturgical celebrations and social ministries. Guided by the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Holy Eucharist, we welcome all people with, respect and compassion. We are vigilant

in protecting the rights of the most vulnerable. In the tradition of our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, we put the “good news” of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ into action.

Saint Francis Parish/Huntington Hospital

Eucharistic Schedule First, Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of the Month Meet at 9:15am in Hospital Lobby Mar. 20th: *Carol Queally, Deacon Jean, Joe Clines, Laurette DeCabia, Clare Intemann, John Kane, Veronica Mennche, Anita Modelewski

We include first off an outline of our Catholic Lenten Fast and Abstinence regulations. Please pay special attention to the Fridays in Lent – each of them is a day of Abstinence. Meat should

not be eaten at all on Lenten Friday. Also every Friday in Lent we offer the Stations of the Cross at 8pm. Special thanks to Paul Koleske. Paul presented a magnificent folk guitar concert interspersed with personal reflection and prayers. Many remember the popular folk groups of the 60’s! Paul fits into that category – also he brings to us his Catholic faith. Paul will return in the future! Very Special Notice “Don’t Miss This One!” On Wednesday, March 16th at 7:30pm in the church we welcome Fr. Roy Turdik SMM of the Montfort Missionaries and Director of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Island in Eastport, NY. Fr. Roy will speak on “Mary’s Role in Our Spiritual Journey”. I heard Fr. Roy speak a while ago on Mary’s Intercessory role and mediation and it was one of the very best presentations I ever heard on this important topic. Here is a perfectly wonderful and timely Lenten talk. After the talk we will pray the Rosary together! SNOW REMOVAL Our winter is gone! The snow has melted! Now the bills are piling up! We have placed special envelopes in the pews. Please make a real effort to give a meaningful donation in this important collection! We don’t need any reminders of how “tough” the winter was. The piles of snow were so high that coming out of parking lots was dangerous! You couldn’t see the oncoming cars until you got your car out in the lane! It’s over for all but the bills! Thank you so much for your understanding and generous response!

Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who use what talents they possess: The forest would be silent if no birds sang there except those

who could sing best!

Fostering Stewardship as a way of life

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor

families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are , in effect, ringing your doorbell.

Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the suffering and poor.

Sharing Gifts Through the Catholic Ministries Appeal

“The Gifts We Have, We Are Given to Share.” As stewards, we choose to live our lives in thanksgiving to our generous God. The CMA allows us to share our gifts in many different ways; through prayer, through gifts of time and talent and by sharing our financial resources. More than 550,000 of our sisters and brothers receive support and assistance from funds shared through the CMA each year. The Catholic Ministries Appeal is Stewardship in Action!

Church Regulations Regarding Fast and Abstinence Abstinence from meat (beast or fowl) is to be observed by all Catholics fourteen years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. This obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs, milk products, or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat. Fasting means limiting oneself to one full meal on a given fast day. Catholics who are eighteen years of age but not yet fifty-nine are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On Fast days, two additional smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength. However, the two smaller meals together may not equal one full meal. Moreover, eating solid foods between meals on fast days is not permitted. *from the Magnificat Companion

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Building & Grounds Committee We are forming a Buildings & Grounds Committee to offer advice and assistance to Father Peter in maintaining and improving our facilities. We are asking for volunteers—parishioners—men or women who have had some experience in maintenance and grounds keeping who would be included in forming the committee. Call Bob O’Hea at 757-7393 and offer your name. The committees duties would be to identify up and coming problems with the plant facilities, machinery, heating and cooling supplies and grounds-keeping. They will look at our service contracts—lawn, snow removal, extermination etc. A/C, boiler etc. and make recommendations. The committee will be a big help around here! Clean-Up Day On Saturday, April 9th from 9:30—12:30 will be a spring time Grounds Clean-Up. Call Chris Torns at 368-5717 and let her know if you can help. Show up with a rake, trowel and some leaf bags. Beautification is a big part of what enhances our experience as happy members of St. Francis Parish!

“The King will answer them: ‘I assure you, as often as you did it for one of My least brothers, you did it for Me.’” Matthew 25:40

RESPECT LIFE NEWS

“Almsgiving represents a specific way to assist those in need and, at the same time, an exercise in self-denial to free us from the attachment to worldly goods. To come to their aid (those in need) is a duty of justice even prior to being an act of

charity.” Pope Benedict XVI, Lenten Message 2008 We gratefully welcome contributions of diapers, money, and baby coupons during our Lenten “DIAPER DRIVE.” Pampers and Huggies diapers sizes 4 and 5 as well as unscented baby wipes, unscented baby wash, and formula are needed at this time. You can help feed a baby with jars of stage two and 3 baby food. New clothes for our little boys and girls in toddler sizes 2-4 would also be appreciated. Please help to fill the white crib in the St. Francis of Assisi Baby Corner located off the vestibule of our Church. We thank God through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Francis for all you have been doing for our precious babies. Please understand we cannot accept baby equipment and baby furniture as we lack storage facilities for them. Please do not bring these items into Church. However, these items (strollers, cribs, bassinets, car seats, etc.) may be donated to The Life Center of Long Island at 631-243-2373 in Deer Park. Please keep our needy babies in mind as you spring clean! Need assistance? Wish to join our St. Francis of Assisi Respect Life Committee? Please call our rectory at 631-757-7435.
