tion beer in honor of its 10thanniversary.

The question is, “What is OldTown Pizza?”

On July 22, Old Town Pizza orOTP will celebrate 10 successfulyears in Lincoln.

The Browning family gottheir start in the pizza businessby purchasing the original Old

Town Pizza in Auburn, in 2002.The Auburn restaurant wasestablished in July, 1999 by Bri-an and Maureen Hayes.

Reese Browning had enjoyedOld Town Pizza and, when hefound out the original ownerswere looking to sell, decided totake on the business venture.

It became a family-run busi-ness with Browning, his parents,his brothers and his childrenworking to make the business asuccess.

“My dad (Reese) worked for theHayes’ for several months beforeescrow closed so that we couldlearn the business,” said MasonBrowning, general manager ofthe Lincoln location. “Within ayear, we started talking aboutopening another place.”

When asked how they cameupon choosing Lincoln as thelocation for their second restau-rant, Browning explained, “A lotof pieces came together. We likedthis historic aspect of the townand we fell in love with itscharm.”

Those who are not familiarwith their second-floor locationin the Lincoln Brand FeedsBuilding may think the satelliteshop downstairs is the face oftheir business.

“People have actually come tothe satellite space looking to geta table and order a pizza and wehave to direct them upstairs,”Browning said. “This works inconjunction with the restaurantupstairs and it acts as sort of abillboard for us.”

If you’ve been to either theAuburn or the Lincoln location,you’ll be treated by the samemenu.

However, some of the pizzashave different names.

The combo pizza in Auburn iscalled “The Mother lode, while it’scalled “The Caboose” in Lincoln.

Considering this familyhad no experience in thisindustry prior to pur-chasing the original OldTown Pizza and openingduring difficult economictimes, it appears that theBrowning family hasfound the right formulato success.

Another business rela-tionship that has proven

beneficial has been thatwith the owners of KneeDeep Brewery. The twobusinesses have cometogether and created alimited-edition beer thatwill only be available atthe pizza restaurant.

“The beer is a non-fil-tered, wheat beer, sort oflike Blue Moon, but witha pineapple flavor to it,”Browning said. “We call itAlohop.”

The beer will be avail-able at Old Town Pizza,

beginning the first of thismonth, and will be servedas long as quantities last.

Old Town Pizza is aplace where you can bringthe family, pick up a pizzato take home or meet abunch of friends for hap-py hour. You will alwaysbe greeted as if you arefamily and served up apizza that is second tonone.

When you eat their piz-za, you’ll be glad that “OldTown” is in “Our Town.”

Fourth of July recipes can be modified year-round


Celebrating events withfriends and family meansenjoying yummy food

and drinks. With the hot weather that

the 4th of July usually brings,refreshing treats should be onthe menu. Easy recipes are alsoa must for this day becauseyou want to join in the festivi-ties, go for a swim or just beable to sit down with a cooldrink in your hand instead ofstanding at a hot stove with aspoon in your hand.

Both of these recipes can bemodified for other specialoccasions.

Since July 4th is consideredour nation’s birthday, whatbetter way to celebrate thanwith a birthday “cake?”

However, with it being sum-mer, a truly-refreshing dessertis in order. This is one that willallow even your gluten-sensi-tive friends to partake (and foryour friends who may be lac-tose-intolerant, you can uselactose-free ice cream).

This dessert can be as easyor as complex as you want itto be. You just have to makesure that it stays in the freezeruntil just before serving (sounfortunately, you can’t take itto a picnic at the park).

Lazy Day CakeTHREE-STEP ICE-CREAM CAKE METHOD1. Allow 2 liters ice cream to soften slightly.2. Add ingredients of choice and mix well (or you can purchase icecream that already have mix-ins added).3. Freeze in a spring-form pan lined with cling wrap (or waxedpaper).

Told you it was easy! This is where the fun comes in and you caneven get the kids involved.

For this dessert, we wanted it to look patriotic so we tried to keepthe red/white/blue theme. After we melted strawberry-shortcakeice cream, we dipped mini Vanilla Wafers in white chocolate andadded patriotic sprinkles. On top of the cake, we added whippedcream, fresh strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. For chocolate-lovers, we even drizzled a little chocolate on top.

with many drink choices. There are two secrets - the sugar content and plenty

of ice. The drink with the most amount of sugar needsto be at the bottom and having ice in the container willhelp to disperse the liquid so that the new layer doesn’tdisturb the layer(s) below. After you add your bottomlayer, fill the glass to the top with ice and pour the sec-ond layer slowly and directly on top of the ice. You cancreate drinks like this with alcohol as long as you’remindful of the sugar content of each ingredient.

In fall 2013, Lincoln AreaArchives Museum volunteersbegan the daunting, yet worth-while, process of puttingtogether “Images of America-LINCOLN.”

This is actually a project thatwas conceived a number ofyears ago but it wasn’t until vol-unteer Gail Hayes came onboard and used her technology

skills to get the ball rolling. “It was clear this couldn’t be a

one-man job,” said LindaAitken, Lincoln Area ArchivesMuseum volunteer. “Thisbecame a relay event and every-one had their hands in the proj-ect. People had to be involvedwho had Lincoln history.”

It was the consensus of allinvolved that the book could nothave happened without differentpeoples’ skills to put it together,different patience levels and dif-ferent work schedules.

The seven-chapter book heldsurprises even for lifelong resi-dent Elizabeth Jansen, a muse-um volunteer.

“It was surprising to see howmany celebrations they hadback then,” Jansen said. “Theycelebrated everything. Peoplegot together, played together,celebrated together. The wholetown closed down for the celebration.”

Because of the publisher’srequirement that each bookcontain no more than 128

pages, the book will take read-ers on a journey of Lincoln,from its founding throughapproximately 1925.

In case you ever wonderedhow Lincoln received its name,an excerpt from the bookexplains, “Charles Lincoln Wilson was president of theCalifornia Central Railroad,which was building the rail-road through Lincoln. Thetown was dubbed ‘Lincoln’ inNovember 1859.”

Coinciding with the release

of the book is “Heritage Trail,”the free countywide museumtour that takes place everyyear.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. onAug. 2 and Aug. 3, all the PlacerCounty museums, from Lin-coln to North Lake Tahoe, willoffer free admission. If you pre-fer to enjoy the beautifulscenery and let someone elsedo the driving, you can take theSaturday or Sunday bus tourthat will visit select museumsfor $10.

When you’re a kid,there’s nothingbetter than a sum-

mer void of school andfilled with lots of swim-ming (or any sort of wateractivity that becomesavailable).

However, when you’rea parent, you’re alwaystrying to figure out waysyou can keep your kidslearning, without toomuch complaining ontheir part.

Not everyone has aswimming pool, and withthe drought we’re goingthrough, getting creativewith keeping the kids wetand cool in this heat canbe a challenge.

Here’s a fun game thatuses water balloons. Youcan tailor this game to suitany age of a child by usingsubtraction, multiplica-tion, division and evenfractions.

Water-balloon learning

You will need water bal-loons, a sharpie/markingpen, some number tar-gets, page protectors andhula hoops/rope. You willalso want a laundry-typebasket to carry the filledballoons.

Start by making the tar-gets. Choose four num-bers (or as many targetsas you want to create) andall the equations that willequal one of these num-

bers. After you’ve writtenthem on paper or printedthem on the computer,slide them into page pro-tectors (they will get wetfrom the balloons).

Fill your balloons. Care-fully write equations thatequal the numbers on thetargets such as 3+4 or 15-5.

For younger children,you could simply writenumbers on the balloonsand have them match thenumbers with the targets.

Place the hulahoop/circle of rope on theground with the target inthe middle and let the funbegin!

Have the kids choose aballoon with an equationand have them throw it atthe target that containsthe answer.

To make it even morefun, have a container of

water balloons that thekids can throw at eachother when they get ananswer correct.

Happy Independence DayThe free celebration, which celebrates the country’s Declaration of Independence, attracts a crowd

of about 10,000 each July. July 4th events include pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Veterans Hall on 5th St. Sponsored by the Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West. 9 a.m.parade is hosted by the Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce. It starts at 5th and A streets, heads weston 5th to F, then north to 6th and then east to E Street. Noon to 5 p.m. is free swimming at the McBean Pool. Live music and games begin at McBean Park at 3 p.m. KidZone isfree from 4 to 8 p.m. at McBean Park. Vendors and food stands are open from 4 to 9 p.m. at McBeanPark.
