Another thank you to everyone who participated in ANZAC Day from home, it was truly remarkable to see so many participate not only from our club but around Australia. In a time where we are unable to meet in person it is important to keep track of anything you are doing for Lions - this can be simply collecting bottles, bottle caps and bread tags, or doing welfare checks on family and friends. Please let Jenny know so she can record your hours for MyLion as it is very important to keep track of your hours. I hope everyone has had a chance to have a look at my project proposal for after COVID-19, I have heard back from a couple of you and it has been positive, but now I challenge you to come up with a project to give back to our community when we come out the other side of COVID-19! This month, the district is going to be promoting Lions Projects - Australian Lions Drug Awareness Foundation and Lions Story Dogs on Social Media, if you would like to know more about these projects make sure you hop onto the districts Facebook page - facebook.com/District201Q1Lions. Eye Glass Recycling : Our optometrists are still collecting the recycled eye glasses for us - whilst we have to glove up and sanitise down after picking them up, we are still able to collect them. We have been able to collect 4,532 pairs of glasses so far this Lions year (from July) - so that equates to 4,532 people that can see better. If you can think of any more Optometrists that might be willing to collect glasses for us, just let us know and we can contact them. The more recycled eye glasses we can collect the better - let’s all help to “save sight”

Cash for Bottles & Cans : In this time of isolation, you can still collect plastic drink bottles & cans for the Containers for Change program. All monies raised are being donated back to our Lions Club. Take them to the “cash in depots” clearly labelled with our ID number (C10240305), they will process them and the monies deposited into our account. Or if you can’t go out, contact us and we can arrange to collect from you.

Club Projects Update

Bread Tags for Wheelchairs : Save your bread tags and bring them to our next meeting for the “Bread Tags for Wheelchairs”. They are sold / recycled and the monies raised from the sales are used to fund wheelchairs for needy South Africans. This is a very easy one to collect.

Bottle Tops : We will be dropping off another big load of bottle tops for the “Lids 4 Kids” project, as soon as the restrictions have been lifted - so make sure that you keep collecting the lids and we can include them in the delivery. The lids shaved down, and using a 3D printer, are made into prosthetic limbs for children. Amazing …

Balls of Wool : Another lot of knitted beanies have been dropped off to us, with thanks from the Griffith Uni Lions Kraft Ladies. If you have any spare 8ply wool - brand new or just the ‘odd ends’ from your knitting projects are used to make beanies for the homeless. All wool donations are greatly accepted - just let us know and we can also arrange collection.

Used Postage Stamps : As always, used postage stamps are helping to fund Walkers for Children with Cerebral Palsy. They are sold through the Australian Lions Stamp Club and the monies donated to Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation for the Walkers. It is great to know that in 15years, the Lions Stamp Club has donated over $141,000 for the Children’s Walkers. Keep your stamps & you too can help.

Whilst we are all in the current COVID-19 restrictions, you can still collect all of the following items :

Lions Clubs International have a target of serving 200 million people a year. To assist with this ambitious target

5 Global Causes have been recognised which will be supported by Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF).

We try to support each one and so we’ll highlight each of them in the upcoming editions of our newsletter, so

that you can see just what Lions are striving to achieve worldwide.

Australian Lions Drug Awareness Foundation : (ALDAF)

Aims and Objectives The aim of the Foundation is to promote awareness & prevention of abuse of alcohol and other drugs. The objectives of the Foundation are to:-

• Promote awareness of alcohol and other drug abuse especially the factors predisposing it;

• Develop education and prevention activities, especially in local communities;

• Participate in campaigns in line with the aims of the Foundation;

• Actively promote and support counselling and rehabilitation programmes. What we do? Proudly part of the Lions Australia family the Australian Lions Drug Awareness Foundation (ALDAF) delivers health and wellbeing information to communities across Australia through a range of projects and resources. Two main Projects (but not limited to just these two) : * Tune In Not Out (TINO) is an award-winning portal style health and wellbeing website full of information to help young people navigate life’s challenges. The website brings together content from wellbeing and mental health organisations from across Australia into one central location. Featuring a range of mediums such as videos, factsheets, stories and even music TINO delivers information on topics such as mental health, alcohol and other drugs, exam stress, relationships, sexual health and more. The perfect go-to website for students and teachers to answer some of life’s tricky questions…

* Formerly known as Fresh Faced Friday, Freedom to Feel Fantastic is a positive body image and self esteem campaign, inviting schools and community groups to help promote the message ‘we all have the right to be who we want to be judgement free’. The project invites young people to tear up the negatives they find themselves thinking, feeling, seeing and saying and reframe their thinking to feel positive about who they are. The project started in 2012 and has run nationally each year. In 2020 the project has been renamed Freedom to Feel Fantastic and schools are invited to participate by running an event at any stage of the year to fit their curriculum.

Newsletters : The ALDAF newsletter go out to all schools across Australia, it contains information about the foundation’s projects and resources. Issues / back issues can be downloaded here : https://aldaf.org.au/newsletters/

Our Club got a great “shout out” on the Lions Australia Facebook Page, for our donation of the iPad, Printer and iPad case to the little boy in the Calamvale area.

Abby from Montrose Therapy & Respite Services advised that a client (name withheld for privacy) is accessing Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy & Physiotherapy from the service, and now only teletherapy services are available due to COVID-19 isolation restrictions.

The iPad and Printer are required as the Therapists need to see him (oral-facial musculature, upper limbs, lower limbs and trunk) to appropriately meet his therapy needs.

The little boy’s Mum said: I honestly cannot thank you enough. This will mean that we will be able to start Telehealth therapy which is so important for the client. I am truly thankful to the Lions.

We were so glad to be able to help.

A big thankyou to our club President Amanda & Lion Alex for their lovely hand made Easter gift (home baked cookies & mini Easter Eggs) - "safely" delivered to our Club members (all social distancing measures were adhered to). It was lovely for them to "check in" with us all, say hello and make sure that we were all OK. Much appreciated and a lovely thought in this time of social distancing.

Lion Jenny has been carrying out a weekly Bingo Game online on her Facebook page - keeping the community connected - both Lions and non-Lions.

She forwards the Bingo Cards out to the players, and then posts the drawn numbers on her page each night. It has kept the players connected (coming from Brisbane, Gold Coast and all over Australia) and they sit eagerly each night waiting for the numbers.

There has been some very positive comments, and the four winners so far have all received a Woolies voucher to buy themselves a small treat (as Jenny can’t get it to them). Lots of fun..

Care

KINDNESS MATTERS..

“Sharing how we’re Caring”

KINDNESS MATTERS..

Parents and Grandparents are some of the “vulnerable” and are the main group of Australians being instructed to isolate to keep the safe & well. President Amanda and Lion Alex have been “checking in” on their relatives on a regular basis - delivering food, dropping off Easter treats, purchasing groceries for them and just carrying out a “welfare check” to make sure that they were all OK. Even though they are family, they are still vulnerable, and need regular contact to feel not so lonely.

Our elderly member, Annie, enjoyed a “welfare check” from Lion Jenny. She was very excited for the company - even if only over the fence at the safe social distance allowed. Jenny dropped off some Club & Districts for Annie to read - and there may have been a couple of choc treats that we know Annie likes.
