Riding for the Disabled - Maryborough Club Project

Riding for the Disabled commenced in Maryborough approximately 25 years ago.

A very active committee of around 18 volunteers work tirelessly to give pleasure each Tuesday to a large group of disabled children and adults.

Participants are encouraged and guided through their experience of horse riding. Firstly from contact with a horse, through to riding on their own, or with the guidance of helpers walking beside them.

Over several years the Lions Club of Maryborough has assisted the RDA to continue their valved work with financial assistance, erection of fenc-ing and building a mounting ramp.

This year Lions have Donated $300 to RDA for the purchase of helmets. These helmets must be replaced every 5 years for insurance and safety purposes.

The Lions Club Of Maryborough is at present raising money for a purpose built cart which can carry wheelchair bound clients, or be converted with seating and safety belts. Lions Lady Monica Hutchinson is one of these very busy volunteers.

Horses used by RDA belong to the volunteers and are pony club trained. To watch the faces joy of the clients and volunteers makes it all worth while.

Mentors for Teens at RiskEssendon Club Project:Whether it’s going to the cinema, tinkering with cars or completing a training course, police and teenagers will work together over coming months.

In a first for the Moonee Valley area, a mentoring program will see police officers matched with at-risk teenagers to act as role models and reduce the chance of them becoming involved in crime.

Sen-Constable Jill Kilpatrick of Moonee Ponds police station is one of two officers taking part in the program which has received $1000 from the Essendon Lions Club.

“We’ll be doing social activities that will lead on to education and training,” Sen-Constable Kilpatrick said.

“We hope the young person gets some sort of education out of it, whether they get back to school or into some training that could lead to employment.”

Sen-Constable Kilpatrick said the teenagers would be matched with an officer with similar interests and would have one-on-one for three months.

Depending on their interests, they could do anything from going to the movies top fixing a car.

“The program is for young people who may not have had

a steady influence in their lives. They are youths who have come into police contact who may. . . . have committed a crime,” she said.

“They might just be out on the streets late at night but hopefully we can give them some guidance.” The program has also been run in Dandenong.

District Convention - Maryborough

The October District Convention had it all. Friday night commenced with the civic reception hosted by the Mayor of Maryborough who welcomed the District Governor and his Committee to the Town Hall.

After the traditional Highland Pipers who played during the flag-raising ceremony, Lions were entertained by a Children’s Choir, Dance Group and the Maryborough Brass Band.

This was followed by supper; and what a traditional country hospitality the supper was with home-cooked sausage rolls and heaps of nibblies.

The Maryborough Club worked hard throughout the weekend to impress.

They were ably lead by the Convention Chairman Trevor Stevens and President Wayne Thomas.

On Saturday the crowd was entertained by three key-note speakers...............Continued on opposite Page

The CEO of Lions Australia Rob Oerlemans spoke mainly on the GMH Sponsorship and the role of the National Office and how it provides service to Lions in Australia.

He also described the impact of the new branding and its aim to appeal to the public.

Next speaker was Past Council Chairman David McKenzie, who spoke about his role as Marketing Manager for Lions Australia.

The final speaker was Doctor Stefan Gruenert from Odyssy House in Melbourne, who spoke about drug rehabilitation.

Lunch time and all conventioneers piled into buses to different coffee shops around Maryborough. The Convention Chairman is still trying to work out why the buses came back with 70 less.

The afternoon continued on with the elections. Numerous elections were held for the DG-Elect, the new positions of first and second VDG, Licola, VLF, etc.Continued on Page 6 . . . . . . . .

District Convention - Maryborough (Continued)Saturday night opened with the Men-o-the Hill Bush Band. Lions dressed for the occasion and had a great time.

Lion Len Cassidy was the centre of atten-tion and showed everyone how to dance “Strip the Willow” .

Parties at the motels followed well after midnight.

Sunday morning the convention continued with the Cakes and Mints Chairmen presentations.

Immediate Past District Governor Ross Wood then presented club awards for his previous year.

DG-Elect Jill Qualtrough announced the joint winners of the “Baby Photo Competition”. Only seven of the 21 cabinet member’s photos could be named. Only Cabinet Treasurer Paul Tijoe was named correctly by all entrants.

A couple of Cabinet members were embarrassed when they forgot which photo was theirs.

Vigorous debate from late notices of motions took place before lunch, causing a division of delegates present, so that the count could take place.

It is a wonderful organisation that can debate things openly and then continue to function as a team without prejudice.

A presentation by the Swan Hill Lions for next year’s convention came next. The convention will be held at the Tooleybuc Club - 40k North of Swan Hill.

Len Cassidy conducted Tail Twisting to end the convention prior to the closing ceremony.

State Leo Conference

Past Council Chairman and MD201 Marketing Manager, David McKenzie with his wife Lorraine at the

Maryborough District Convention

It was an unusually cold and wet blus-tery day when we journeyed to Pascoe Vale Girls Secondary School back in August.

The conference was supported by both the school and the Lions Club of Glenroy.

201V1-4 Lions Members represented were Ultima, Strathfieldsaye, Brunswick, Glenroy and Maiden-Gully Marong.

Leos State Chairman Henry Van der Wolde of the Brunswick Club conducted proceedings, along with our host Helen Jackson the Principal of Pascoe Vale. The conference started off with the official welcome and speeches. Following this was a lovely morning tea put on by the girls. The next session was totally unex-pected when the conference moved to the gymnasium; and attendees were taught how to do ‘Hip Hop’ for the next hour or so.Glenroy Lions then provided a magnificent BBQ and salad lunch for everyone. After lunch the Pascoe Vale and Monash Leos split into two groups to come up with ideas for Leo projects within their school and Clubs.

The conference was ended by DG Alan Crilly presenting attendance certificates to the Leos.
