7FEATURES

THE INTERNATIONAL SYMBOL OF ACCESS

The International Symbol of Access (ISA), also known as the (International) Wheelchair Symbol, is maintained as an international standard with ISO 7001. It was designed by Susanne Koefoed in 1968, and was modified by Karl Montan by adding a circle on top of the seat to give an impression of a seated figure. This symbol has been used for nearly 50 years and is widely used and understood globally.

Despite being an international standard, Sara Hendren and Brian Gleenley, co-founders of the “Accessible Icon Project”, challenged the symbol by modifying the ISA. Their proposed modification depicts a dynamic and active figure.

Recently, however, the International Organization for Standardization rejected the proposal with no clear explanation. The U.S. Access Board also rejected the proposal because the modified icon does not meet the traffic symbol standards. *Source: Wikipedia.org, Accessible Icon Project, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control

Devices (http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/resources/interpretations/2_09_111.htm)

[REJECTED

]Even though the alternative graphic was rejected by prominent agencies, Hendren and Gleenley’s icon is still being used and adopted by different towns and cities around the world.

What do you think about the modified ISA?

Features of the Modified ISA*

1: Head Position Head is forward to indicate the forward motion of the person through space.

2: Arm Angle Arm is pointing backward to suggest the dynamic mobility of a chair user, regardless of whether or not they use their arms. Depicting the body in motion represents the symbolically active status of navigating the world.

3: Wheel Cut-outs By including white angled knock-outs, the symbol presents the wheel as being in motion. These knock-outs also work for creating stencils used in spray paint application of the icon. Having just one version of the logo keeps things more consistent and allows viewers to more clearly understand the intended message.

4: Limb RenditionThe human depiction in this icon is consistent with other body representations found in the ISO 7001 - DOT Pictogram. Using a different portrayal of the human body would clash with these established and widely used icons and could lead to confusion.

5: Leg PositionThe leg has been moved forward to allow for more space between it and the wheel which allows for better readability and cleaner application of icon as a stencil.
