Tulsa P.D. Recovers Tulsa P.D. Recovers 2004 Mercedes and 2 Other Stolen 2004 Mercedes and 2 Other Stolen

VehiclesVehicles

Originally installed in Dallas, TX.

When the owner of a car dealership in Tulsa discovered his business had been burglarized overnight and the 2004 Mercedes had been stolen. A report was made with the Tulsa Police Department on 6/5/09. The vehicle information was entered into the NCIC police computer. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle. Neither the owner nor law enforcement had to do anything else to activate the LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery Network because LoJack’s interface with law enforcement is both seamless and instantaneous. On 6/5/09, the silent LoJack homing signal being broadcast from the stolen Mercedes was picked up by Investigators with the Tulsa Police Departments Auto Theft Unit with a LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC) installed in their unmarked vehicle. As the detectives began tracking the silent signal using the signal strength and relative bearing indicator, a Tulsa Police Department marked unit also began tracking the signal. Just fifteen minutes later the vehicle was located in a vacant field at the end of a dead end street located 100 E. 59th St. North. The stolen vehicle was abandoned and undamaged. Two other vehicles also stolen in the burglary, a 2007 Chevy Corvette and a 2007 Mercedes were found and recovered at the same location. Also located was a stolen 1988 GMC Sierra half ton pick up truck.

Oklahoman – June 30, 2009

New tracking technology helps locate stolen SUV BY PETER WRIGHT Published: June 30, 2009

Gong Chen’s 1998 Toyota 4-Runner was recovered in a matter of hours using a radio-tracking device after it was stolen from a parking lot in Oklahoma City. PHOTO BY NATE BILLINGS, THE OKLAHOMAN

Gong Chen had been at White Water Bay for about an hour June 9 when he realized his keys were gone. He had left them in a bag on top of his SUV, but by the time he could return to the parking lot, the keys and the car had vanished. Chen called police to report the theft. That triggered the car’s LoJack radio transmitter, a hidden tracking device that emits a signal that can be tracked by some police cars. "I didn’t even think it’s been working,” he said. "It’s been 10 years, 11 years.” Chen said the device was installed in New York shortly after he bought the car. LoJack has been available in Oklahoma since January, but the company has been operating for more than 20 years, state LoJack representative Dennis Johnson said. LoJack installs trackers in police cars. The trackers pick up a tone that grows louder as the squad car gets closer to a stolen vehicle. Oklahoma City Police received trackers this year. "Since January we’ve been very busy getting police departments equipped with the LoJack equipment,” Johnson said. Lt. Kevin Bradbeary of the Oklahoma City Police auto theft detail said there are three main levels of protection for a vehicle: visible devices such as clubs that lock steering wheels or brakes; alarms, ignition locks and other devices that can alert to a theft in progress; and tracking devices such as LoJack. "An alarm with a kill switch will generally stop the theft,” Bradbeary said. He said the popularity of anti-theft devices in cars seems to stay fairly even every year, not significantly increasing or decreasing. But even with safeguards a vehicle can still be targeted. "If they want your car bad enough, eventually they can get it,” he said.
