President Perman Initiatives

• Re Branding the Campus– “University of Maryland Baltimore” is

passe–“University of Maryland” is current

–Maryland Seals are history—but the dome may be back!

Childhood Obesity

• Most significant health problem in US– Identified this before Michelle Obama!–Needs and interdisciplinary response–Prevention in schools is critical

Interprofessional Education

• Wants everyone to know people in other professions

• President’s clinic will have doctors, nurses, and social workers involved

• He is already impressed by what we do

Strategic Planning

• Pete Gilbert will lead• Has already started and will wrap up in late

winter or spring of 2011

• SSW should consider completing a strategic plan in spring of next year that builds on the campus strategic plan

• Putting aside a day a week for development

• Already had a dinner and breakfast with Dave and I and Stelios Spiliadis MSW (‘67) to discuss development of a gala event to honor the SSW

Faculty and Staff Support

• End to furloughs and temporary salary reductions

• Try to squeeze out a COLA• Merits would be great

“Be Nice”

• Civility is not only pleasant but it is an imperative in providing effective professional care– Listening carefully– Giving the quality of relationships priority– Concentrating on “being nice” to everyone

STEM, nursing, and IT graduates• Increase USM programs delivered through distance education• Increase access for economically disadvantaged and minority

students• Increase the percentage of minority and, especially, African

American undergraduates• Increase the number of nationally ranked (top 25) academic

programs at USM• Increase prestigious awards and National Academy memberships• Increase the percentage of students satisfied with their

education to 90% (undergraduates only) [next MHEC survey is 2011]

5th Year Underway• Maintain our strong teaching• Support curriculum reform• Continue to grow our funded training, community

engagement, CPE, development, and research• Continue to improve our space– Finish Phase I by putting some “art” back on walls– Finish Phase II by moving Media Center and Computer Lab

to 4th Floor• Further strengthen our infrastructure with hiring of

Director of Finance and Operations• Improve measurement of the School’s performance

Goals for 5th Year Continued• Honor excellent performance• Support the broader use of technology by staff, faculty,

and students• Increase sustainability (get greater engagement in

recycling and walking stairs and using mass transit)• Roll out new admissions procedures• Find a sensible, efficient way to update our strategic

plan• Organize the stacks of papers and journals in my office• Build the scientific base for social work practice• Prepare for our 50th anniversary celebration!!

• Continue to celebrate my good fortune in being the Dean here
