Lost in Translation
What if, after all these years, many of us are
actually farther from God without even knowing it?
Can we really blame them for forgetting?
Mark 8 14 The disciples had forgotten to buy provisions, so they
had only one round of flatbread among them.
JESUS
A Grave Warning15 Jesus took this moment to warn them.
Jesus: Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.
The disciples didn’t understand what Jesus was talking about and discussed it among themselves.
Some Disciples: 16 What?
Other Disciples: He’s saying this because we have run out of bread.
CLUE
Spiritually Half-blindJesus (overhearing them): 17-19 Why are you focusing on bread? Don’t you see yet? Don’t you understand? You have eyes—why don’t you see? You have ears—why don’t you hear? Are you so hard-hearted?
Don’t you remember when I broke the five rounds of flatbread among the 5,000? Tell Me, how many baskets of scraps were left over?
Disciples: Twelve.
Jesus: 20 And how many were left when I fed the 4,000 with seven rounds?
Disciples: Seven.
Jesus: 21 And still you don’t understand?
Despite all that they had seen Jesus do for them and others, they still really didn’t get how and why God does what God
Because many of us still donʼt get God either, we are too easily co-opted and corrupted by
the YEAST of the Pharisees and Herod.
YEAST | A microscopic, one-celled organism belonging to the group of organisms called fungi. It is used in baking as a leavening agent, where it converts the fermentable sugars present in
dough into the gas carbon dioxide. This causes the dough to expand or rise as gas forms pockets or bubbles.
YEAST OF THE PHARISEES & HEROD | Their ‘yeast’ is their professing. They profess that their work is virtuous, when it only seeks to exploit others and rule over them. Their
intentions are not pure. When they speak, their words seem noble, but they have a hidden agenda. They are power hungry and seek to control those who lend them an ear. Their goal is
to gain advantage in every situation, rather than to seek the good of all.
Pharisee’s Yeast Corrupt Gov’t Yeast
Rigid, controlling, arrogant, graceless
A Hidden Agendain every package!
Their teachings and ways systematically
corrupt everything they are joined with.
They fear and expel those they cannot
control.
Abraham would have condemned the work of the Pharisees. He heard God’s voice speak
inside him, and went on a journey to understand it better. Pharisees clearly had
no idea what this kind of ‘inner’ leading is. They taught that to understand God is to
obey an insanely long list of rules and regulations that govern every action of the
body. But Abraham saw that it wasn’t the outside of a person that matters, but the inside. Thus, he embarked on a journey without knowing the final destination.
In arrogance, the Pharisees claimed to know the way to the Father. Yet
anyone who sought to hear His voice for him- or herself was slandered.
“Do you not see that in slandering those who attempt to hear the voice
of the Father, the Pharisees do not really want to hear what He has to say
to them?”
The Pharisees led God’s people astray. They taught that the outside observances of the law are more important than listening to the voice of the Father that speaks in the heart. But they didn’t
understand that the voice of the Father speaks to what is good, and teaches the one who hears to
Laws that are written outside of the person are obeyed out of fear. They are obeyed for fear of
punishment, exile, loss of social status, and so on. But the person who follows what she or he hears in their heart does so because that person loves truth.

Christ’s Perfect Love Should Cast Out All Our Fear
Relationship
From a Recovering PhariseeROMANS 8 1 Therefore, now no condemnation awaits those who are living in Jesus the Anointed, the Liberating King, 2 because when you live in the Anointed One, Jesus, a new law takes effect. The law of the Spirit of life breathes into you and liberates you from the law of sin and death. 3 God did something the law could never do. You see, human flesh took its toll on God’s law. In and of itself, the law is not weak; but the flesh weakens it. So to
condemn the sin that was ruling in the flesh, God sent His own Son, bearing the likeness of sinful flesh, as a sin offering. 4 Now we are able to live up to the justice demanded by the law. But that ability has not come from living by our fallen human nature; it has come because we walk according to the movement of the Spirit in our lives.
