Introduction

My country is Oman. The population of Oman is 3.15 million. Oman’s capitol is Muscat. The language they speak is English and Arabic. Oman is in Asia. I chose this country because I thought it would be nice to learn about.

Geography

Oman is a country in the middle east. It is surrounded by U.A.E, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia. Jabal Shams is the highest mountain in Oman. Oman is 1,000 miles long {1,700km}. 82 % is land mass,15% is mountain ranges and 3% is coastal plains. Oman has no freshwater lakes and no permanent rivers. Did you know Oman is on a peninsula?

Climate

In Oman the rainfall averages are 1.5 inches {4-9 cm}. The Dhofar region receives 25 inches {63.5 cm} in a year. Oman is 47 C {116 F} in the summer. This effects the country because you need to stay under the shade cause it’s so hot.

Culture

The national day in Oman is on Nov.18 and 19. The first Oman poetry festival was in Muscat on Dec.2006. The national dress for Omani men is a ankle-length, collarless gown with long sleeves called dish dash.

Economy

Oman exports 61% of petroleum, oils, and crude oil. Oman exports 31% to China,13% to Korea Republic,14% to Japan,7.7% to Thailand,6.1% to United Arab Emirates.

Interesting Facts

Oman gained independence from the Portuguese empire on 1651. The capitol of Oman is Muscat which is the country’s largest city. Most of Oman's drinking water is desalinated seawater. In the past, Oman used to be one of the richest countries in the world. In 1971 Oman joined the United Nations.

Oman is an amazing country! I learned a lot. For ex: Oman is on a peninsula, Oman has no freshwater lakes and no permanent rivers, The coastal areas are humid with temperatures of 47C or 116F.
