Issues and SolutionsOur actions can lead to

positive change.Issues, problems, issues! There are big and little issues and problems that concern a lot of people. Some problems and issues have obvious solutions while some issues and problems seem to have no solution.

In your Exhibition process you will get a chance to apply your skills as an action taker to some of these issues and problems. You will be choosing a real problem(either local or global) and carefully working through to a solution and take some action to help this issue or problem.

Working through this Exhibition journal will help you organize your time and resources to discover the best solution to your chosen issue or problem.

Good luck!

Our actions can lead to positive change.Expectations and

Assessment

By the end of this Exhibition we will have collected evidence of your learning in many different ways. This evidence will include:

Completed PP Student Exhibition Journal. Individual contribution to group

springnotes. Peer evaluations for co-operative learning. Ongoing individual reflections/evaluations. Persuasive writing piece. Final project/presentation, action and

reflection.

• Brainstorm real life issues or problems that you think need a solution. Look around you and think about the problems that exist in your school, your neighborhood, Zurich, Switzerland, or elsewhere in the world.

Why is this a problem/issue?

• You have chosen this problem for a reason.• How does it affect your life or those around you?• How does it affect your feelings or emotions?• Why do you think it is important?

Why do you feel a responsibility for this problem/issue?

Inner Journey

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Atomic EnergyIt affects me because my house is in 3 different “Sperrzonen“ of 5 in Switzerland, it also affects me because if 1 of the possible 3 explode, I will be in the radioactive zone.

REFLECTION 1Our actions can lead to

positive change. You have chosen a topic. •Has it changed from your first thoughts? How and why? No it has not changed my thoughts because I wanted to do Nuclear Energy from begin on. Nuclear Energy was my topic from the beginning on because of the incidents in Fukushima. •Are you happy with this development? Yes, I am happy with the development of my ideas.•You have been put in a group. Who is in the group? My group is Nik, Niklas, me and Leo’.•Why are they in your group? These people are in my group because they were all interested in nuclear energy.•Do you think the group can work co-operatively and effectively? How and why?Yes, I do think so because we worked very hard and not only did the blog, which is the action we also did a viral E-mail and a movie.•What did you think about your first week of collaboration? In are first week of collaboration we didn't work so hard as we were supposed to be but after we pulled ourselves together and did the maximum and supervised the average.

Developing Lines of Inquiry

You have defined your problem/issue in relation to Form, Function, Causation andResponsibility.Look at the remaining two Concepts to clarify your lines of inquiry

Connection How is it connected to other issues/problems? Nuclear Energy is connected by the fact that there is renewable energy and

renewable energy can take over nuclear energy but at the moment nuclear energy with 441 power plants just does to much energy…

Perspective What are other points of view? Nuclear energy has two sides one is the fact that nuclear energy is when the waste is

stored correctly nuclear energy can be a safe, dependable, green and inexpensive source of energy. But when nuclear energy is not treated correctly then it can be very dangerous.

Searching and Collecting

Our actions can lead to positive change.

t

Our Process – Searching and Collecting

People to whom we spoke:

Mark Schulz:We spoke to Mr. Schulz (our advisor) and he gave us important information and helped us to make are presentation.

The Liberian:We also talked to the Liberian who provided us with very good books and vital information.

Surveys we created and distributed

Nik did the second survey on Google docs and wasn’t so successful and only got a few answers. Here is the link to his survey:

Important information from our advisor:Our advisor did help us by providing us with info that would help us to take action and make a presentation.

My survey was made 28.March.2011 and it already has 27 answers. I think it was a very successful survey. I saw that people do not know very much about nuclear energy. Here is the link to my survey:http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FSDK5YF

Process Reflection

These are things I thought about our topic before BUT now I think different

First I thought that nuclear energy was bad and now I think differently because nuclear energy produces an immerse amount of energy and is also used for medicine and science purposes.

The are ideas we had about our problem/issue before AND I still have now.

How to storage nuclear waste.

These are things about our problem/issue that still challenge us and we still wonder about. How to storage nuclear waste and how to make a substance that can’t make a bomb.

We would like our audience to leave our presentation with these “BIG UNDERSTANDINGS”

• Nuclear energy is good• Nuclear waste must be stored correctly• Nuclear energy can be a safe, dependable, green and inexpensive source of energy

Synthesizing and Connecting

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Page 12: Lukas's Exhibition Journal

Think of Solutions.ACTION!

Brainstorm a wide range of ideas that could help solve this problem/issue

Here is your chance to be creative. Write down all possible answers. Do not discard any yet because this is your chance to start thinking outside the box to find a creative solution. Be creative, unusual, fanciful, practical and obvious. S T R E T C H your imagination!

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Write a letter to the prime minister to encourage him to make nuclear waste safe.

Make a viral movie or e-mail

Start protesting Putting a prize to make people think what we think

Page 13: Lukas's Exhibition Journal

CHOOSING ACTIONIs your action S.M.A.R.T.?

Specific Yes

Measureable Yes

Attainable Yes

Relevant Yes

Time-bound Yes

Specific •Is your action clear•Does everyone understand about how your action will happen?•Have you covered 5 “W”s and the “H”?Measurable•How will you know your action has worked?Attainable•Will you be successful taking this action?Relevant•Does this action actually relate to your problem?Time-bound•Will you have enough time to implement your action?

We can make a

difference

Page 14: Lukas's Exhibition Journal

Make your Action Plan

How will your action affect your problem?

Our action will affect the problem by changing the minds of people and making them take action in a mass scale.

Who needs to be convinced?

The whole population needs to be convinced to do a mass protest and make a difference.

What objections might you come up against?

At the moment there are no objections to come up against us.

How can you overcome those objections?

If we have none then there is nothing to overcome.

What resources will you need?

I believe my main resources will be books and internet.

Who can help you?

The population can help us to protest.

Where should you begin?

I think we should begin in the school and then broaden out.

What will be your next step?

My next step will be to send it to the outside world.

Who will do what to achieve your action?

The population will achieve all we want to achieve.

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Page 15: Lukas's Exhibition Journal

REFLECTIONActing and SharingWe can make a differenceMy action was to make a viral e-mail and send

it to the world. We made it as a persuasive e-mail and sent it out now it was out. I think our action was successful and it made a difference even if it was a small difference it was a big difference to us.

Page 16: Lukas's Exhibition Journal

Exhibition Night Reflection

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Exhibition night was a special night even through the unexpected fallout of our group member Nik I think we did a good job. It was a very rare occasion that a group member falls out on the big night so we had technically a very hard occasion.

Page 17: Lukas's Exhibition Journal

My final message is…My final message is that nuclear energy can be dangerous but when nuclear energy is treated with knowledge and respect nuclear energy can be a good source of energy.I repeat:

Nuclear energy is a good source of energy!
