Presence

5

Live Communications Server 2003 introduced presence informations with automatical update

Microsoft Lync 2010 gives users real-time presence information including photos, availability, and location

Presence is present in Exchange / Outlook and SharePoint (and with Lync 2013 we have it also in OneNote, and other Microsoft Office application)

Using presence you’re able to connect to people using the best tool (IM or video/audio call for online contacts, e-mail messages for offline connections and so on)

Using Sharepoint you’re able to find

Many presence engines have only a few presence states, such as Available or Away

The presence engine Microsoft has developed behind Lync Server is referred to as Enhanced Presence

Is a combination of a numerous presence states, access levels, interruption management, automated updates, application integration, location information, and multiple points of presence (MPOP)

Enhanced Presence Schemas Microsoft Lync Server

21

Page 22: Lync server overview (Inroduction) US English

In Lync, you control what information your contacts can see about you by setting their relationship to you. The table indicates what contacts at each level can see

Lync users are able to restrict their presence to users who are in their contact list

By default, this feature is not enabled OCS 2007 R2 users can connect to Lync Server

2010 Communicator 2007 R2 does not provide the

capability to set these enhanced privacy controls

Lync Mobility

23

Lync mobile clients allow you to communicate with your work identity so you can stay in touch with your contacts without being tied to your desk

Not all the options are available on all the platforms so, first of all, a link to the comparison matrix from Microsoft (comparison matrix for Lync clients features)

Lync Server - Web Conferencing

26

Page 27: Lync server overview (Inroduction) US English

Web conferencing attendees have a number of different client options for joining meetings; these offer varying degrees of functionality :

Lync—The full client can be used to join a conference or act as a presenter This is the most complete end-user experience and has no restrictions

Lync Attendee—This application is a subset of the Lync application and offers full web and A/V conferencing capabilities, but can be used only for joining a meeting

Lync Web App—This web application is a third option for joining web conferences . In Lync 2010 is a browser-based Silverlight application that does not offer any audio or video capabilities

Survivable Branch Appliance e Server

31

• The Survivable Branch Server is a Windows server that has Lync Server 2010 Registrar and Mediation server software installed

• It is designed for branch sites that host between 1,000 and 5,000 users who lack a resilient WAN connection and have trained Lync Server 2010 administrators available

• It must be configured to connect to either an IP/PSTN gateway or a SIP trunk to a telephone service provider

• The Survivable Branch Appliance (SBA) is a server appliance with an embedded PSTN gateway running Windows 2008 R2 and Lync Server 2010

• It is designed for branch sites that host between 25 and 1,000 users• The SBA can provide basic phone services to users at the branch site when

the wide area network (WAN) link to the Lync Server 2010 central site is down

Microsoft tests and qualifies phones, headsets, webcams, conference room devices, PCs and other devices for Lync under its Compatible Devices Program. This program has 2 levels:

'Optimized for' –devices that offer a rich and integrated experience Other compatible IP phones – IP phones tested to provide interoperability

and quality of experience http://technet.microsoft.com/it-it/lync/gg278164.aspx

Lync - Enterprise Voice Features

Page 39: Lync server overview (Inroduction) US English

Lync - Enterprise Voice Features Call Admission Control (CAC)

Lync Server introduces a way to determine whether new calls can be established depending on available network bandwidth

Media bypass Enables media from a Lync Server client

to bypass the Mediation Server in order to be processed directly by an IP-PBX, SIP trunking provider’s Session Border Controller (SBC), or PSTN gateway

Page 40: Lync server overview (Inroduction) US English

Lync - Enterprise Voice Features Call Park

Call Park allows an Enterprise Voice user to put a call on hold from one telephone and then retrieve the call later by dialing an internal number (known as a Call Park orbit) from any telephone

Enhanced 911  In Lync 2010 Microsoft

incorporated a location mechanism to provide location awareness for Llync clients and Lync client phones

SIP trunking

40

Page 41: Lync server overview (Inroduction) US English

Lync - Enterprise Voice Features Call Forwarding

Lync gives the possibilities to easily configure voice settings like forwarding

Simultaneous Ring

Once this option is enabled any calls that go to your Microsoft Lync client will also be “forked” to the number you specify

Page 42: Lync server overview (Inroduction) US English

Lync - Enterprise Voice Features Response Groups

A Response Group allows you to route calls to a certain group of people, called agents

It's how you create customer service call trees, and help desk call centers

The Enterprise Voice server funnels calls from the Support/Customer Service number you designate to the agents in the Response Group

Lync - Enterprise Voice Features Team Call

An Enterprise Voice user is able to define a group from Lync client

A Team Call Group is a list of contacts that are enabled to answer on behalf of the user

The contact that will answer to the call will also know who was the original called person

Team call is managed (enabled and disabled) with the same tools you use foe standard call forward

Page 45: Lync server overview (Inroduction) US English

Lync - SIP trunking Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is used to initiate and

manage voice over IP (VoIP) communications sessions SIP trunks are virtual connections that can be established

over any of the supported SIP trunking connection types Direct SIP connections, on the other hand, are SIP

connections that do not cross the local network boundary (that is, they connect to a PSTN gateway or PBX within your internal network)

Page 48: Lync server overview (Inroduction) US English

Lync supports Federation - enabling interoperability with other corporate IM networks

An Access Edge Federation server enables IM , Presence and Web Conference with external partners

IBM SameTime or Cisco Unified Presence Server are supported too

48

Public IM connectivity You qualify for federation with Windows Live

and AOL if you have Lync Server 2010 Standard Client Access License (CAL) or you have active Software Assurance (SA)

A Lync Server Public IM Connectivity license is required for federation with Yahoo!

49

o One of the big benefits of Microsoft Lync is the ability to collaborate with ease with those outside your organization

o The goal of the Lync Federation Directory Project is to make Lync users and administrators more aware of just how many organizations are available for federation—today
