3332.60 Instructional Technology Practicum

NEEDS ASSESSMENT: I have been given the opportunity to create an

instructional training based on Microsoft PowerPoint. The training will benefit the paraprofessionals and

substitute teachers at PSJA High School. Substitutes and paraprofessionals have not been

introduced or trained on Microsoft PowerPoint, therefore not enabling them to continue and deliver a teacher presentation due to the lack of these skills.

WHAT IS AVAILABLE:

Training is offered for paraprofessionals, but is minimal. Currently there are no training workshops required for

substitutes. Substitutes are not given an overview of what is required

in the classroom setting to execute the teacher lesson plans.

WHAT SHOULD BE AVAILABLE: Paraprofessionals are given the tasks of assisting teachers

during a full day curriculum and left alone with students when teachers assist day meetings. Paraprofessionals should be given the same workshop training as teachers in order to successfully assist the learner and teach them the objectives in the absence of the teacher.

During certification, substitutes should be instructed with a proper overview of what may be expected of them to further implement teacher lesson plans. Training should be made available and mandatory at the beginning of every year for substitutes to be introduced to new methods that are to be used in the classroom and that may allow them to acquire the necessary skills to deliver instruction.

THE RECOMMENDED SOLUTION FOR FILLING THE GAP:

I have created a PowerPoint Presentation module that consists of a 5 slide Chemistry Equation that allows the trainee to experience hands on training on the actual software.

The training will be provided for all substitutes and paraprofessionals followed by distribution of the training through an online webpage for easy access at any time, can be viewed multiple times and at a pace that accommodates the employee.

INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL:

After completing this training paraprofessionals and substitutes will be able to create PowerPoint presentations relevant to the lesson.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: After completing this training (CN), the learners will be able to:

Create a slide using Microsoft PowerPoint. Utilize appropriate fonts, colors, text, and bullets to

communicate an instructional message. Add animation and clipart to enhance the instructional

message.

ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING OUTCOMES:The learner will be assessed observationally by the instructor

Using a checklist without assistance with a 90% accuracy.

Performance Objective Assessment1. Create a slide using Microsoft PowerPoint.

1. The trainee will create a final product at the end of the session. Final product must adhere to the assignment.

2. Utilize appropriate fonts, colors, text, and bullets to communicate an instructional message.

2. Students will be assessed by creating a 4 slide Flowchart, instructor will observe students via Checklist for appropriate use of Mechanics.

3. Add animation and clipart to enhance the instructional message.

3. Quiz assessment will be administered after each Training Topic.

LEARNER CHARACTERISTICS The trainees are employed with the PSJA I.S.D. and work at PSJA

High School. They consist of substitutes and paraprofessionals ages 18 through 60 years of age.

The paraprofessionals hold beginners to advanced computer literacy skills. The substitutes have no to advanced computer skills. All employees should be at a level of beginner computer literacy skills or have a basic understanding of how to recognize and operate the computer components.

A ten question survey that can provide information about the knowledge the trainees possess in operating a computer system and it’s software can provide the feedback necessary that will enable the instructor to accommodate all computer proficiency levels.

LEARNING CONTEXT: The Instructional setting will take place at the PSJA

High School computer lab. A total of 25 computers including the instructors main

desk frame, on individual desks provided with internet service and earphones for each trainee.

A projector that consists of an audio and visual is available for the instructor to guide the trainees through the PowerPoint Training Module.

Printouts of the Chemistry Presentation are available on students desks with the instructions to help guide the trainees through the reconstruction of the presentation.

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES:Introduction: This training will cover the usage of Microsoft

PowerPoint and the features it contains to create a presentation that will allow you to enhance a lesson in the classroom setting.

Overview of training: There are many features to work with through

PowerPoint and this training will introduce you to them. The lesson you are going to produce can allow you to see

how images and color can add to an interesting subject and support your topic.

STATEMENT OF GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Using (CN), the trainee will be able to access PowerPoint, create a

multiple slide lesson using graphics such as animation, colors, clipart and design with a 90% accuracy.

Topic 1:

Lets begin to access and discover PowerPoint Features Click on the start button Scroll to Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 and click to open the

software Lets review the basic concepts regarding PowerPoint: slide, layout,

views (normal, outline etc), the toolbars and icons needed to complete the assignment; standard, formatting, common tasks etc…

Click on the start button followed by clicking on (New)

CONTINUATION OF TRAINING OVERVIEW:Topic 2: Now we will discuss the features and steps required to begin

the training presentation The instructor will present the 5 slide Chemistry presentation

and discuss the steps used to create the slides contents Trainees are ready to begin their presentation

Topic 3: Using the New Slide box trainees will select the first

highlighted slide and will key in Name and Course Begin second slide by clicking the New Slide Icon Trainees will create the PowerPoint provided with images of

all 5 slides on a projector

ASSESSMENT:After the instructor and trainees complete the practice

presentation of the lesson, the trainees will create the

Chemistry Equation Presentation on their own

provided with projector images of the presentation

and printouts. The instructor will observe the trainees during the production of

the presentation and use a checklist to begin the grading process. The instructor will view the final product and evaluate that the

presentation contains the required materials such as (all 5 slides, graphics and mechanics, that the presentation is visually readable to the audience)

The presentation must contain a 90% accuracy and trainees must work alone.

FORMATIVE EVALUATION:(SME) My First strategy would be to utilize is a Subject Matter Expert which

would evaluate my training module and lesson plan. The person that I would consult is the Computer Technology teacher and friend at PSJA High School, Mr. Jaregui. He is a licensed professional and has taught computer technology for 8 years. We will work together in reviewing the instructional plan to improve quality and the effectiveness of the training.

(Peer Review) The second strategy that I would employ would be a Peer Review.

My online classmates are the most qualified at the moment to help me review and revise my instructional plan. We are using the most up to date software and are creating presentations of our own. I value their ideas and positive criticism. Two of my peers have been co-teachers for several years and can bring experience to my instructional plan.

EVALUATION AND REVISION STRATEGY:Mr. Jaregui (SME) Mr. Jaregui and I will meet in his office during the first

week of August for 1 hour and review my instructional training plan via my laptop. We will begin with the revision of the instructional goal and objectives followed by evaluation my instructional plan such as (topics, materials used for instruction, and assessment plan).

Peer Review Two of my classmates will receive my instructional plan

via email and review the project for 1 hour and provide feedback via phone and notes. The feedback will consist of revision of instructional goal and objectives, the 5 slide Chemistry Equation Module and my topics to be covered.

SUMMARY: The purpose of this training is to provide the necessary

skills to substitutes and paraprofessionals so that they may adequately deliver the lesson at hand as instructed by the teacher. The instructional training module that the Instructor has created will guide the trainees through the reconstruction of a final product. Microsoft PowerPoint is used frequently through most upper grades 6th through 12th levels. The training will provide the opportunity for these individuals to advance themselves in computer literacy and gain confidence in the workplace.
