Motors for EU motor efficiency levelsA new Europe-wide agreement will ensure that the efficiencylevels of electric motors manufactured in Europe are clearlydisplayed. In contrast to the American legislation on motorefficiency the European agreement does not establish mandatoryefficiency levels.It basically establishes three classes giving motor manufacturersan incentive to qualify for a higher class.

ABB is one of only a handful of leading motor manu-facturersin Europe to have a motor range to meet or exceed theminimum efficiencies stated in the highest level of the EUagreement of LV motors.

These efficiency levels apply to 2- and 4-pole, three phase squirrelcage induction motors rated for 400V, 50Hz with S1 duty classwith the output 1.1 to 90 kW, which account for the largestvolume on the market.

The efficiency of motors from different manufacturers arecollated in a database, EURODEEM, published by theEuropean Commission. It is accessible over the Internet athttp://iamest.jrc.it/projects/eem/eurodeem.htm.

Drain holesMotors that will be operated in very humid or wet environments,and especially under intermittent duty, should be provided withdrain holes. The appropriate IM designation, such as IM 3031, isspecified on the basis of the method of mounting the motor.

In the basic design motors are supplied with drain holes asstandard (see diagram below).

Since all motors are provided with a special plastic plugs in thehole, the degree of protection remains IP 55.

When mounting the motors, it should be ensured that the drainhole faces downwards. In the case of vertical mounting, theupper plug must be hammered home. In very dusty environ-ments, the plug should be hammered home too.

Stator

Stator framework, bearing shields and feet are made of aluminiumalloy with low copper content.


Terminal box and connections

Terminal box for sizes 56 and 63The terminal box is made of aluminium is located on top of thestator. It is provided with two knockout openings (one Pg andone metric) and can be turned 4 x 90°.

Cable glands are not included. The size of the box is the same insize 56 and 63.

Terminal box for sizes 71 to 100The terminal box is made of aluminium and is located either onthe top of the motor, or on either side of the motor. The lowerpart of the box is integrated with the stator and allows cableentries from both sides.

It is provided with two knockout openings (one Pg and onemetric) on each side. Cable glands are not included.

Degree of protection of standard terminal box is IP 55.

Connections

The terminal block is provided with 6 terminals for connectingCu-cable. The terminals are marked in accordance with IEC60034-8.

Terminal box for sizes 112 to 132The terminal box is made of aluminium and is located on thetop of the motor.

It is provided with two openings and can be turned 4x90° asstandard. Cable glands are included.

Degree of protection is IP 55.


Bearing lifeThe nominal life L10 of a bearing is defined according to ISO asthe number of operating hours achieved or exceede by 90% ofidentical bearings in a large test series under certain specifiedconditions.

50% of the bearings achieve at least five times this figure.

The life of bearings (50.000) is dependent on various factors suchas bearings load, motor speed, operating temperature and thepurity of the grease.

The permissible radial and axial loading for different motor sizesis shown in the table on page 8.

The table is valid for 50 Hz. For 60 Hz and/or some otherbearing life than is specified in the table, the values are changedaccording to the table on the right. The table values assume theoccurrence of only radial (FR) or axial (FA) forces. In the case ofsimultaneous radial and axial forces, information can be suppliedon request. It is assumed that the radial force, FR, is applied atthe end of the motor shaft according to the diagram.

Permissible loading on shaft

LubricationOn delivery, the motors are lubricated with a type of greaseintended for use in dry or humid environments, at normalambient temperature. M2VA motors 56 to 132 are lubricated forlife, with lithium based, heat resistant grease.

Hours of operation during which the bearings still have adequatelubrication with ambient temperature of 40°C.

The calculated bearing life L10 for power transmission by meansof a coupling (horizontal machine).

Rating plateThe motors have metal rating plates resistant to severe environ-ments.

Single-speed motors of size 56 to 100 are available with voltagecodes S and D, i.e., voltage range at both 50 and 60 Hz. The

current rating for each voltage range is specified on the ratingplate. It represents the highest current that can exist within thevoltage range at the rated output . The power factor and speedspecified on the rating plate apply at 400 V 50 Hz and 460 V 60Hz.
