Elks helping Elks and our veterans was the theme of this year's Polar Plunge, sponsored by the Marshfield Elks. Steve Hardy and most of the Hardy clan, includinghis son, daughter and grand daughter, braved the cold waters (about 42 degrees) offRexhame beach in Marshfield on Sunday, January 1. They were joined by fellow Maynrd Elk , Jim Callahan and Harry See from Wilmington.
Together the Maynard Elks contributed $700, which will go toward two worthy veteransorganizations: Homes for Our Troops and the USO Transition 360 Alliance.
Afterwards, participants returned to the Marshfield Lodge and were treated to somegreat food and the hearty congratulations of all in attendance. The Polar Plunge isan annual event for the Marshfield lodge and serves as one of their biggestfundraisers.
Their Time And Energy -- A number of Elks helped out with another successfulChristmas tree sale in 2016. These happy Elks were among those who contributed theirtime and energy to this year's sale. THANK YOU!!!

EVENTS AT THE MAYNARD ELKS
Members all,
With the December 15, 2016 changes to the Massachusetts law regarding recreational use of Marijuana, it has become necessary for your Board of Directors to address this issue and informall members that: the use of Marijuana is not permitted anywhere on Maynard Elks #1568 property in general and specifically anywhere inside of the Lodge building including but not limited to the smoking room. It is your Board of Directors opinion that the Law is still being sorted out and it is unclear how thelaw will be enacted. Until it is clear, this will be the stance your Board of Directors will be adhering to going forward. Our Massachusetts Elks State Association has addressed this issue, will continue to monitor it andwill recommend the direction it feels all Lodges should take.
Fraternally yours,Darrell French Per, Trustee

ELKS HISTORY FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY
On February 2, 1868 Charles A. Vivian and George McDonald presided over a meeting offered a motion to organize the Jolly Corks as a lodge along a benevolent and fraternal lines and providing a committee be appointed to formulate rules and regulations for it's government, prepare a suitable ritual, and select a new name. In the Cooper Institute Library the Brothers found the ELK described in a work of Natural History as an animal fleet of foot, timorous of doing wrong, but ever ready to combat in defense of self or of the female of the species. This appealed to the committee as containing admirable qualities and thetitle of ELK was incorporated on February 16, 1868 by a vote of 8 to 7.
