I recently had the opportunity to spend my day on a ride-along

with Officer Jill Ploof, one of the law enforcement officers at the Humane Society of Greater Rochester. She, along with Officer and law enforcement supervisor Reno DiDomenico, Officer Bob Benedict, and dispatcher Lee Nearpass, make up the law enforcement team at our organization. The department, which is solely funded by private donations and not tax dollars, investigates animal cruelty cases in Monroe, Orleans, Genesee, and Livingston counties. The majority of the complaints the officers respond to involve dogs and cats, but farm animals (especially horses) also make up a large portion.

Along with protecting the animals, the officers have arrest powers. “We’re not animal control officers,” says Ploof. “We’re certified state peace officers who work for a private organization. If we see a crime being committed, we have the authority to make an arrest.”

Most reports of animal cruelty or neglect come through our Animal Cruelty Hotline at (585) 223-6500, but cases are also referred from municipal and state police agencies as well. Calls are usually answered by dispatcher Lee Nearpass and then assigned to one of the three officers with the goal of responding in person within 24 to 48 hours. Cases are handled by priority, with most extreme or critical ones given precedence.

On the day of my ride-along, the majority of calls Officer Ploof responded to were regarding animal neglect. Officer Ploof explained that many situations can be resolved simply through education--explaining what needs to be done for the welfare of the animals to comply with the law and then returning after a period of time to ensure changes have been made. The conditions the officers see most often typically involve animals being outside without proper shelter or ani-mals in poor health. “People will leave their pets outside in

the rain with no shelter,” says Ploof, “or think it’s okay to not feed them for a few days because they ran out of food.” Many of the owners we spoke to that day were not aware of the laws within New York State that protect animals. When informed of the steps they need to take many people clearly are learning something new. Ploof explained, “They’ll say, ‘It didn’t even occur to me.’ Other times, it’s a little more of a struggle.”

One of the houses where we stopped was a follow-up to a previous visit she had made regarding the lack of shelter for two dogs that spend the majority of the day outside. On our return trip, we discovered a new doghouse had been provided for them. While it still may seem inhumane to some to keep a pet outside most of the time, an owner is complying with state law if they provide adequate shelter, food, and water.

If a situation doesn’t get resolved after multiple visits, then Officer Ploof has the authority to seize the animal from the owner. On the day of the ride-along, Ploof seized a very thin

female pit bull from a location she had visited a number of times because the dog was in the backyard with inadequate shelter. The dog was brought back to Lollypop Farm where she was given a warm place to stay, a veterinary exam, and much-needed food.

Throughout the ride-along, Officer Ploof talked about her almost 20 year career in humane law enforcement. I couldn’t help but notice she certainly has the right demeanor for this line of work – authoritative but concerned, and always calm under pressure. We discussed her oddest cases, some scary

close calls, and what keeps her coming back every day. ”In most cases you can tell pet owners do love their animals” says Ploof. “You have to believe in people that they truly want to do the right thing. It is never my intent to take someone’s pet from them, but if it’s the best option for that animal, then ac-tion must be taken.” Ploof continued, “The job is hard, with lots of ups and downs, but I try not to focus on the negative. If I’m able to help one animal that day or educate one person on proper pet care, then I consider it to be a success.”

Many pet owners are challenged with the decision to have their pet spayed or neutered. While there is cur-

rently an over population of family pets, many of our shelters and rescue groups have to refuse the unwanted pets. Due to space limi-tations in our local shelters and rescue groups the euthanasia is increasingly the only option for unwanted pets. Nutritional Needs for Aging Pups

It’s no surprise that man’s best friends are living to be much older than they did 25 years

ago. Improvements in pet nutri-tion have had a direct impact on the lifespan and quality of all dog breeds. As your four-legged friend ages, her nutritional needs change,

and her diet must be tailored to maintain optimum body weight, and to prevent or mini-mize the develop-ment of chronic

disease. Anywhere from 6 – 10 years of age is a good time to start your pup on a senior diet. The larger the breed, the earlier you should start one. These diets, which are avail-able in an array of different brands at Pet$aver, are low in fat, high in fiber, and contain the most digest-ible proteins. Obesity is one of the biggest health problems facing senior dogs today, and mobility and weight management are important

to leading a healthy life. Monitor-ing the quantity you are feeding, and adjusting as necessary is also crucial. Feeding more frequent, smaller meals helps to ensure the best digestibility and weight control. Older pups may also need supple-ments such as glucosamine and chondroitin, which help support joints, or vitamins, antioxidants, and more. Keeping up with dental care and cleaning, regular grooming, and regular visits to the vet are some of the other ways to help make your best friend’s golden years some of the happiest of her life!

Think Like a BirdHaving owned and operated a bird specialty store for the last 24 years I’ve come across a lot of people who’ve had birds when they were younger and just assumed that things haven’t changed as far as diet, caging and behavior goes.

So much for the customer always being right, a big part of this job is to educate people on all facets of pet care. Training is an ongoing thing with pets, and one of the most important things I tell people is to “think like a bird”. Put yourself in the birds position, what is your bird thinking, how does it translate what you are doing to how it would af-fect itself.

One of the most common problems people have is a screaming parrot, “Why does my bird scream?” and they hate it when I tell them they prob-ably taught the bird to scream. They look at me as if I didn’t hear their question correctly. Nearly all screaming issues are caused by the owner rewarding the behavior. It’s natural for these animals to make noise, that’s what they do. Try telling your kids to go outside, have fun but don’t make any noise.

You’ve hopefully created an environment that is fun and stimulating for your bird, a normal healthy bird will at times be loud. However, if you don’t want the noise you know that the bird will be quiet for food, so a treat is given, or perhaps you let the bird out of the cage to quiet it, or you pick the bird up… these are positive rewards as far as the bird is concerned. What was that bird doing when it got something positive? Keep in mind, any behavior that is rewarded is likely to be repeated.

Unfortunately, screaming isn’t the only issue to address. People reward birds for plucking their feathers, throwing their food, jumping off the cage / stand onto the floor, biting… Acting dramatically, a scratch on the head, food rewards, even a look in their direction at the wrong time might be what the bird is looking for and may be perceived as a reward. Think like a bird.

Biting is another big problem that many people seem to reward. Don’t return the bird to the cage after a bite, a cage

shouldn’t be negative, it should be security. My parents could send me to my room as punishment, all my stuff was there, no punishment at all. What I see almost daily is people allowing birds to mouth them, a gentle nibble that doesn’t hurt. Then when they least expect it the bird bites a bit harder and they now reprimand the bird for essentially doing the same thing they previously allowed.

When training I always want the bird to do something that it wants to do, not because we make it. For instance, give it a reason for wanting to step onto a finger. Don’t push into its chest until it gives in and steps up. It’s stepping up because it doesn’t want to fall backwards. Instead try offer-ing a treat by your finger and see if the bird will step onto your finger for it. Here it’s doing so because it wants to get

a reward. Behaviors that are rewarded are likely to be repeated.

If you can put yourself in your birds position, try to see what it

sees, training should make more sense to you and go more smoothly

for both you and the bird.
