EL PASO, Texas - With help from El Paso's official
mascot, Amigo Man, the 2015 United States Bowling
Congress Open Championships got off to a festive start
at the El Paso Convention Center.
Amigo Man led the tournament's first 48 teams down
Center Aisle, while local entertainers - Mariachi Tapatio
and Ballet Folklórico Paso Del Norte - escorted out this
year's Joe Bowler, Chuck Brockett of Burlington, Iowa,
before delivering some Southwestern flavor to the
Opening-Day festivities.
Nearly 250 bowlers and hundreds of bowling fans and
invited guests filled the 62-lane faacility, which took
just 64 days to transform from an empty building into
the largest convention-center build in 112 years of tour-
nament history.
The venue includes 52 lanes for the USBC Open
Championships and 10 Showcase Lanes for practice
sessions and the Bowlers Journal Championships pre-
sented by USBC, office and vendor space, locker and squad rooms and a concessions area.
El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser and his wife Lisa, USBC
President Andrew Cain, County Commissioner David
Stout, Destination El Paso General Manager Bryan
Crowe and El Paso Sports Commission Executive
Director Brian Kennedy were on-hand for the formal
ribbon cutting, Brockett officially kicked off the event
by knocking down six pins on the ceremonial first ball
and two bowlers from each team got to participate in
the Mass Ball Shot Ceremony.
Brockett, a 55-year-old left-hander, made his third
consecutive Open Championships appearance and ran-
domly was selected from the bowlers on Saturday's
squad to preside over the opening ceremony, a tradition
that dates back to 1951. To keep with the local theme,
he sat atop the Joe Bowler throne in a Mariachi vest
and sombrero, instead of the traditional cape, crown
and scepter.

Jordan Lopez 300 in High School CompetitionBy Vince Albrecht
WALLINGTON, NJ 01-31-15 - Jordan Lopez has
been there before, but as most anyone will tell you,
it “never gets old”. As a sophomore, Jordan became
only the third bowler in the history of the presti-
gious Bergen County Tournament to roll a perfect
game, doing so at Bowler City in Hackensack. Last
year, in NJIC league play at Wallington, he repeated
the feat and recently, again in a league match, he
used his potent two-hand delivery to explode with
another twelve-bagger, slamming the pins into
oblivion. Hugs and cheers throughout for first team
all-state candidate Lopez; trust me, it “never gets
old”.

"My son and I were the last
ones standing, so I was pulling
for him," said Brockett, who is
the general manager of the
Burlington Bees, the Single-A
affiliate of the Los Angeles
Angels of Anaheim. "I was
nervous, but excited. I just did-
n't want to dump it in the gutter.
I pulled the shot, but thought I
covered the spare. It's exciting
to know that I'll always be Joe
Bowler for 2015, and I am
going to treat the sombrero and
vest like trophies."
Saturday marked the first of
128 consecutive days of compe-
tition, which will bring nearly
60,000 bowlers and guests to
Sun City between now and July
12. This is the tournament's first
visit to El Paso and fourth trip
to the state of Texas.
On the lanes, Al's Pro Shop 2
of Mazeppa, Minnesota, took
the lead in Regular Team for the
second consecutive year after
posting games of 850, 893 and
928 for a 2,671 total. Darik
Rude led the way with a 660
series and was joined by Jeff
Kiffmeyer (548), Andy Rude
(538), Doug Christianson (492)
and Matthew Carenza (433).
"The lanes definitely were a
little more difficult this year,"
said Darik Rude, a 34-year-old
right-hander who made his 15th
tournament appearance. "We
bowled the opening weekend
last year and went home with
the lead, but that didn't last too
long. It's fun to bowl early and
see your name on the leader-
board. It's one of our goals each
year."
Weaver Farms of St. Anthony,
Idaho, found its way to the top
of the Classified Team stand-
ings with a 2,485 total on games
of 834, 730 and 921. Jace Crain
paced the team with a 590 set
and was followed by Dan
Weaver (545), John Hansen
(505), James Armstrong (423)
and Christy Hansen (422).
Competition continued the
next day with the first doubles
and singles squad of the year
and will run daily from 9 a.m.
until approximately midnight.

USBC OPEN
Continued from Page 1This is a big year for Charlie Tredway and his family. In May, Charlie is
going to bowl in his 50th consecutive USBC National tournament. This
one is in El Paso, Texas. He is a 60-year veteran of the sport and doesn’t
know what to expect when he is feted on the lanes.
In all those years, Charlie has always brought 2 teams of 5 men to the
event. “There is nobody left from when I started,” he said. This includes
Doc Russano, Bob Higgins, and Gene Sutton. At one point a young
Johnny Douglas bowled with Charlie’s group in Long Beach. His father
had to sign a permission slip for the 17-year-old to bowl. This year Charlie
is hooked up with his son-in-law, Daniel Alpaugh, Evonte Dickerson,
Steve Peterson and Billy DeHaas, Jr. His other team is having a reunion,
as Tony Larson, Harry Wright and Bob Casey will join Tom Johnson, who
moved to Florida, and Tony Russo who is in North Carolina.
Convention, tournament, and Hall of Fame week used to fall on the sec-
ond week in March, which is when many of our locals would go as dele-
gates and bowlers. Tredway’s first tournament was in Rochester, New
York. “The day we bowled, there was 18 inches of snow. One year in
Billings, Montana, it was 4 degrees below zero.” This is the first year ever
that the USBC tournament will be in El Paso. That’s a relief because
Charlie and his family usually drive to the tournaments, and in recent
years the site has alternated between Las Vegas and Reno repeatedly. They
have been to Reno 4 times.
Besides Sharon, Charlie and Marge have another daughter, Sandy and
son, Charlie Jr. Adding to the family are grandchildren Crystal, 28, Ashley,
24, Ryan, 21, and Steven, 21. Charlie’s 76th birthday was Monday, he
shares the day with grandson, Ryan.
As an added family treat, Charlie, his wife of 25 years, Marge, daughter
Sharon and son-in-law Dan are going from El Paso to Galveston to hop
onto Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas for a tropical cruise. Truly,
there will be no snowstorms for them this year!
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Happy 20th Anniversary to my bowling partner, best friend and
spouse, Guy Schliewenz. You are amazing for flying with me to Reno in
1995 to be the only couple ever to be married in the bowling stadium,
and putting up with all the lunacy since.

FAIR LAWN, NJ – The Stan
Niemiec youth travelers visited
Fair Lawn and rattled off forty-
one deuces and eleven explosive
“600s” in yet another impressive
display of their talent. North
Arlington bounded from the gate
with a sizzling 914 net, led by
Tyler Keefe 267, Chris Liloia
256 and Jordan Lopez 223 in
steering clear of a hot Holiday I
quartet.
Staying in the game throughout
with a huge 856 net of its own,
Holiday I dropped the torrid
opener, 1091-1022.
While all three games were
competitive, North Arlington
stayed a step ahead of its oppo-
nents, sweeping the match, 3013-
2895. Jordan Lopez enjoyed the
day’s best set by adding games of
206-247 for 676; Tyler Keefe fol-
lowed his strong opener with
204-195 for 666 and Chris Liloia
connected with 189-198 to finish
with 643. High rollers for the
potent Holiday I squad were the
McGuire brothers, Alex with
223-200-211: 634 and Ryan 248-
207: 622; Lilly Sigona chipped in
with 202-191 and Nick Cilento
put up a pair of 194s.
Aided by teammates’ Emily
Young 195, George Held 193 and
Arielle Wallace 183, Dickinson
freshman Matt Burzynski carried
Bowler City II to five of seven
points against Holiday II by
blitzing the pin deck with 234-
266- 672. Pacing Holiday II were
Al Chamberlain 210-210-240-
660 and Devin Crowley with
218. League-leading Bowler City
I extended its lead by snaring
seven points from the vacancy,
triggering the onslaught with an
opening game four-deuce 869
net.
Jon Mikal Sepero and Kyle
Schellberg led the charge with
respective scores of 235-236-664
and 206-211-224-641. Kristen
Kane and Janina Santoro pitched
in, each rolling a 214 single.
Nathan Tombo delivered a triple
deuce 227-204-211-642, Nick
Reyes 203 and Tiffany Sucero
189, but it wasn’t enough to pre-
vent Bowler City III from being
shut out by T-Bowl, 2901-2811.
The victors put together a con-
sistent offense led by Patrick
Mayer 213: 597, Joshua Spiegel
197-570 and Matt Morris 195-
572. After taking the opener from
Fair Lawn largely due to Karl
Kattermann‘s 268 [he added a
closing 209 for a 623 set] and
Sean McGuire’s 208, Boonton
got a big lift from 13-year-old
Drew Gille; firing a season-best
225, Drew powered his team to a
scant thirteen-pin second game
win and five of seven points.
Matt Myers posted an opening
229 for Fair Lawn, but it was
Hassan Izzard’s third game 223
that propelled the team to two
points, edging Boonton, 958-940.
Rounding out the session, Lodi
rebounded from an opening game
blowout loss to Montvale to roll
stellar games of 1002-1010 and
escape with four points. Sparking
the comeback were Brandon
Voorhees 219, Louis Ferrante
211-199 and Nick Ferrante 213.
Twelve-year-old Michaella Raab
broke loose with huge over aver-
age games of 192-202, a season
high, and teammate James

Montvale.
