Epiphany Sunday the From Pastors Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Very often, in my Advent and Christmas writings, homilies and reflections, I will talk about how the Jews had waited for the Birth of Jesus, which we recognize as the coming of the Messiah. This was not just any event for Israel, this was the Event, which was embedded in the fabric of every Jewish person’s being; it defined them as a people, and identified a Jew as a member of that people. Mary and Joseph, being Jewish, were caught up in this expectation of the Messiah, and the news that their child would be the long anticipated Liberator of Israel, the Restorer of the Throne of David, the Promised One, would have been overwhelming, exhilarating and humbling at the same time. And even though Mary and Joseph were not fully aware of what Christ’s birth in Bethlehem would mean; even though many in Israel would reject the Messianic claims of the followers of Joshua Bar Joseph (Jesus the Son of Joseph), let alone the assertion of Resurrection from the Dead and His Divinity springing from the Godhead, even those Jews who followed Him did not understand fully, until the Resurrection. Perhaps because it is caught up in our own cultural religious understanding, we often overlook the differences between Pagan and Jew that have come down to us in the Christmas story. Because of the places our ancestors, or ourselves, immigrated from, there is little chance that we are descended from the first century Jews who gathered to hear Jesus unpack the Sacred Scriptures for them; more than likely we are descended from the pagans who inhabited lands where these early Jewish Christian and subsequent Gentile (that is non-Jewish) Christian missionaries brought the Gospel. Whether we belong to those descended from the lands of the Roman Empire, or as far east as what would become known as India, both of which hold the distinctions of being the earliest Christian communities, or if we come from the Northern European lands, other parts of Asia, the Americas or Sub-Saharan Africa, with the exception of Ethiopia, where the Church expanded during the Medieval period and Age of Exploration, our ancestors would have been pagan. For the most part Pagan derives from the term for those who lived in the countryside, since early Christianity tended to spread more rapidly in the urban areas, and those in the rural areas continued the older religions passed down. Our understanding of paganism, which is based on a Judeo-Christian worldview, would place those who are outside Abrahamic Faiths as pagan; therefore, Jews, Christians and Muslims are non-pagans, everyone else is pagan. As simple as it may seem, it gets more complicated, as members of tribes living in isolation from the rest of humanity, except for those occasions when they literally have a missionary for dinner, are pagans. They sacrifice to idols, and have no conception of Theology or the Magisterium of the Church. However, Hindus also sacrifice to idols, and have a more complex religious belief, holding to a pantheon of gods, which, at the deepest level of their theology, are supposed to be expressions of the one. Here is the similarity of Hinduism and Buddhism, which have common origins. Back in the West, the Greek philosophers, who really begin with Socrates, and ad-vance through Plato and Aristotle, etc… are also considered pagans, because they did not follow the God of Abraham, the God of Moses, etc…. Why? Because they were in Greece, and the big contact between Greeks and Hebrews came after Aristotle’s student, Alexander the Great, died and left four of his generals to rule the lands he conquered. Want to know how that went? Read first and second Maccabees and see why the Jews just celebrated Hanukah. So why all this attention to pagans? Because in the human heart, even without the benefit of being a member of God’s chosen people, Israel, and knowing the relationship they were called to share, there is a longing in the Human Heart to know God. This longing caused pagan wisemen to travel to a stable in a foreign country, to come to know God. The feast of Epiphany, which we celebrate, shows that the relationship Israel was called to, has been opened up for all to be a part of, as we come before the Messiah, Who has exceeded all expectations of Jews and Gentiles alike. Throughout the world, we are called to be Children of God, Who created us in His own image and likeness, and chose to become one of us in the Person of Jesus Christ. Pax, Fr. Henry

January 5, 2020-- The Epiphany of the Lord    LIGHT OF THE WORLD Epiphany can be understood as an extension of the Nativity of the Lord that we celebrate on December 25. While at Christmas we cele-brate Jesus’ coming as the long-awaited king and Messiah of the Jew-ish people, on Epiphany we celebrate the revelation that Jesus is the Savior and Light of all nations—Jews, Gentiles, and all people. The star shines so brightly that it attracts magi who come from far distant countries to worship Jesus. They are not Jews, yet they are drawn to the Light of the world. The letter to the Ephesians reveals that the Light of the world was for the Gentiles as well as the Jews—Christ gathers all people into the light of his love. The reading from Isaiah also describes a gathering of diverse peoples, but this time it is to the light that emanates from the people of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

They opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. — Matthew 2:11b

National Migration Week Monday: St. André Bessette Tuesday: St. Raymond of Penyafort; Julian Calendar Christmas

(Mateo 2:1-12).
