LAST CALL FOR ‘A NIGHT

IN PARIS AUCTION...…..10

What proved to be a beautiful day in February became icing on the cake for a great visit to our State Capitol. A comfortable motor coach ride with friends from our Chamber… a guided tour of the Capitol, complete with interesting historical facts about our state and early government… an elevator ride to the 5th floor ―Whispering Gallery‖ above the central chandelier… an aerobic stair run (above the central dome) to the spiral staircase that exits to a narrow outside walkway near the pinnacle of the Capitol for breathtaking views… an oxygen treatment before descending… an introduction in the Senate… private lunch in the Capitol… legislative visits… a tour of the Missouri Supreme Court… the Capitol Museum… Central Dairy Ice Cream… then back to the coach for a serenade of sleeping Chamber members returning to Fenton.

Whew! What a great break from the office and a great opportunity to see our Capitol and legislative process in action. We all learned that our elected officials welcome our input and really do want to hear from our members. It‘s vitally important that we connect with them throughout the legislative session and make our voices heard.

Special thank you to Senator Eric Schmitt, Representatives Mike Leara, John McCaherty, and Dwight Scharnhorst for their support and efforts to make this a memorable and educational event. Make plans now to be a part of the 2014 visit.

What a great day to be a Chamber member! I know that I have talked about the synergy within the Chamber before, but I get so excited as it continues to grow every day. We just hosted our third record-breaking crowd for a monthly membership luncheon! The lunch catered by Viviano‘s was delicious and plentiful, the speaker was very informative and it was hard to even gain the attention of the crowd because there was so much networking happening around the room. I personally thought that I had a well-polished ―Elevator Speech‖ until I heard Fred Miller‘s presentation. With that being said, I am working with the sales staff within our company to apply what I learned from the presentation, and I encourage all of the members to do the same. As a matter of fact, the Chamber is giving you the perfect opportunity to perfect your ―Elevator Speech‖… on Wednesday, April 10th from 8:00am to 11:00am at the Chamber Office, we will host Fred Miller at our ―Crafting Your Elevator Speech‖ Workshop where you will leave that day with yours completed!

There are so many different types of events and opportunities within the Chamber to market your business and to get involved in supporting the community that I don‘t even know where to start. One of the Chamber‘s biggest fundraiser events of the year is the annual Dinner Auction coming up on Friday, April 5th at Andre‘s South. This event is very important to the Fenton Chamber on many different levels; it is a major fundraiser to help an ever-growing membership and it is a large part of what enables the Chamber to continually support the community by giving out the over $211,000 in scholarships that has been awarded since 1989.

As a member, there are several ways in which you can support this annual event. You can buy raffle tickets for our largest cash prize ever, donate auction items or a bottle of wine for the ―Wall of Wine‖, sponsor the event, or even buy a table with coworkers or friends. This is always an exciting evening for those who attend as it is a time to connect with fellow Chamber members and guests while supporting a great cause. This is the last big push for Chamber members to step up and show their support!

Rapidly approaching after the Dinner Auction is the Business and Community Fair that takes place on May 29th at Rockwood Summit High School. Information regarding booth registration, advertising and sponsorship opportunities is starting to be released. Last year, the Chamber completely sold out of all 109 available booths and witnessed a record 800 attendees! I would like to give a huge ―Thank You‖ to Rockwood Summit High School and Partners in Education for their accommodations and hospitality as well as their continuous support of the Chamber. We are looking forward to another successful year for one of the areas largest business fairs.

I would like to thank everyone for their support and contributions of time, money and resources to all of events and efforts of the Fenton Chamber. Without all of our members, the Chamber would not be at the point we are at today. Remember that together we can all succeed, so SHOP CHAMBER FIRST!

Sincerely, Greg Bresler President-Fenton Chamber Area Chamber of Commerce General Manager-Andre‘s Banquet Facilities & Catering

Fenton Fire Protection District

How would you escape from a building in an emergency? Do you know where all the exits are in case your first choice is too crowded? Are you sure the doors will be unlocked and that the exit access, such as a hallway, will not be blocked during a fire, explosion, or other crisis?

Knowing where the emergency exits are in buildings can save your life. Some buildings, such as schools, have fire drills to practice using emergency exits. Many disasters could have been prevented if people had known where fire escapes were, and if emergency exits had not been blocked. In the case of the Station Nightclub (100 fatalities), the premises was over capacity the night fire broke out, and the majority of patrons proceeded to the front door, which was woefully inadequate to evacuate the number of people trying to escape.

492 people died in the deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history, the Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston in 1942. Guests could only exit through a revolving door, which became blocked during the stampede to escape the fire. There are now regulations requiring that exits of large buildings open outward, and that enough emergency exits are provided to accommodate the building's capacity.

What is an exit route? An exit route is a continuous and unobstructed path of exit travel from any point within a workplace to a place of safety. An exit route consists of three parts: • Exit access – portion of an exit route that leads to an exit. • Exit – portion of an exit route that is generally separated from other areas to provide a protected way of travel to the exit discharge. • Exit discharge – part of the exit route that leads directly outside or to a street, walkway, refuge area, public way, or open space with access to the outside.

Are employers required to have emergency action plans? If you have 10 or fewer employees, you may communicate your plan orally. If you have more than 10 employees, however, your plan must be written, kept in the workplace, and available for employee review. Although employers are required to have an emergency action plan (EAP) only when

the applicable OSHA standard requires it, OSHA strongly recommends that all employers have an EAP.

When you enter a building:

• Locate exits immediately When you enter a building you should look for all available exits. Some exits may be in front and some in back of you. Be prepared to use your closest exit. You may not be able to use main exit.

• Check for clear exit paths Make sure aisles are wide enough, not obstructed by chairs or furniture. Check to make sure your exit door is not blocked or chained. If there are not at least two exits or exit paths are blocked, report the violation to management and leave the building if it is not immediately addressed.

• Do you feel safe? Does the building appear to be overcrowded? Are there fire sources i.e. candles burning, cigarettes or cigars burning, pyrotechnics, or other heat sources that may make you feel unsafe? Are there safety systems in place such as alternative exits, sprinklers, and smoke alarms? Ask management to clarify your concerns. If you do not feel safe in the building, leave immediately.

During an emergency:

• React immediately If an alarm sounds, you see smoke or fire, or other unusual disturbance immediately exit the building in an orderly fashion.

• Get out, stay out! Once you have escaped, stay out. Under no circumstances should you ever go back into a burning building.

Knowing the location of exits can save your life. Always take the time to plan your escape route!

CAN YOU GET OUT?

Investment Mistakes to Watch For… at Different Stages of Life

As an investor, how can you avoid making mistakes? It’s not always easy, because investing can be full of potential pitfalls. But if you know what the most common mistakes are at different stages of an investor’s life, you may have a better chance of avoiding these costly errors. Let’s take a look at some investment mistakes you’ll want to avoid when you’re young, when you’re in mid-career, when you’re nearing retirement and when you’ve just retired.

When you’re young… Mistake: Investing too conservatively (or not at all)

If you‘re just entering the working world, you may not have a lot of money with which to invest. But don‘t wait until your income grows — putting away even a small amount each month can prove quite helpful. Additionally, don‘t make the mistake of investing primarily in short-term vehicles that may preserve your principal but offer little in the way of growth potential. Instead, position your portfolio for growth. Of course, stock prices will always fluctuate, but you potentially have decades to overcome these short-term declines. Since this money is for retirement, your focus should be on the long term — and it‘s impossible to reach long-term goals with short-term, highly conservative investments.

When you’re in mid-career… Mistake: Putting insufficient funds into your retirement accounts

At this stage of your life, your earning power may well have increased substantially. As a result, you should have more money available to invest for the future — specifically, you may now be able to ―max out‖ on your IRA and still boost your contributions to your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as your 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b). These retirement accounts offer tax advantages that you may not receive in ordinary savings and investment accounts. Try to put more money into these retirement accounts every time your salary goes up.

When you’re nearing retirement… Mistake: Not having balance in your investment portfolio

When they‘re within just a few years of retirement, some people may go to extremes, either investing too aggressively to try to make up for lost time or too conservatively in an attempt to avoid potential declines. Both these strategies could be risky. So as you near retirement, seek to balance your portfolio. This could mean shifting some of your investment dollars into fixed-income vehicles to provide for your current income needs while still own-ing stocks that provide the growth potential to help keep up with inflation in your retirement years.

When you’ve just retired… Mistake: Failing to determine an appropriate withdrawal rate

Upon reaching retirement, you will need to carefully manage the money you‘ve accumulated in your IRA, 401(k) and all other investment accounts. Obviously, your chief concern is outliving your money, so you‘ll need to determine how much you can withdraw each year. To arrive at this figure, take into account your current age, your projected longevity, the amount of money you‘ve saved and the estimated rate of return you‘re getting from your investments. This type of calculation is complex, so you may want to consult with a financial professional. By avoiding these errors, you can help ensure that, at each stage of your life, you’re doing what you can to keep making progress toward your financial goals.
