STAFF “Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help, as I lift up my hands toward your Most Holy Place”

Psalm 28:2

Seeking That Most Holy Place Lent is here. It’s fully here. On Ash Wednesday, I received the ashes that were burnt from the palms. They were thick with oil and incense. When I received them I could feel the char on my skin and I was reminded of those words, “From dust you came and to dust you shall return.” What a holy thing this ritual happens to be.

Lent is a particularly interesting time of year for us. We are invited to reflect on the words of scripture and the very covenants that God has made with God’s people. We are reminded, daily, of our brokenness and our failures that subsequently bring us lowly to the cross. It’s here at the base of that old rugged cross that we are left saying the words of the Psalmist…. “Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help.”

Lent is here. For some reason I have always been drawn to the elements and season of Lent. It brings me to a different place in my walk with God. Perhaps, it’s because it forces me to slow down and actually consider my life and my faith. Perhaps, it’s because it requires me to take part in my own brokenness, even when I don’t want to admit that brokenness. Perhaps, it’s because it’s the moment I get to be vulnerable and admit that I actually need to have those oily ashes rubbed on my forehead.

Lent is a time to cry. It is a time to lift up your hands toward that Most Holy Place and cry out to God. This is why I secretly enjoy Lent. I don’t have to be strong, I don’t have to be perfect, I don’t have to be upright and true, I don’t have to be anything but what I already am….broken.

Lent affords us the time to admit our brokenness. It beckons us to such a place that is Most Holy. Our Lenten journey is one that allows us to admit that we need to change something, we need to reconcile something, we need to fix something, we need to forgive someone or just simply that we need a savior.

This Lent, allow yourself the opportunity to let the ashes placed on your forehead to really sink in. Let it stain you. Then, let your cries be heard by the one who saves. Go ahead, God is listening. In Christ,

Pastor Reggie Klindworth Youth and Family Ministry Crown of Glory Lutheran Church .
