Leadership Programs
Leadership development within SLS takes place at differing levels of the organisation; club, branch, state and
national. Each has a particular focus, and each prepares members for movement through those levels. It is
recognised as a critical element to the health and well being of SLSA.
Leaders Masterclass
What is the Leaders Masterclass about?
The aim of the Leaders Masterclass is to provide an opportunity for existing leaders within SLS (at all levels) to
participate in a high-level leadership development program. The masterclass will provide participants with an
environment that will enable them to refresh and extend their leadership capabilities. No Leaders’ Masterclass is
ever the same, with participants’ guiding the program content based on their identified development needs.
Who can apply?
The target audience includes committee members i.e. Presidents, Deputy Presidents, Life Saving, Surf Sports and
Junior/Youth roles at Club, Branch, State or National levels who aspire to remain and progress in their leadership
roles in the future.
When and where?
The SLSA Leaders’ Masterclass 2013 will be held Friday 24 May – Monday 27 May at
the Australian Emergency Management Institute (AEMI), Mt Macedon Victoria.

Tin Shedder Profile
Robin Kidney (aka Marbles) Bronze Medallion No. SA202 How many of you would have known that Robin Kidney; a highly respected “Tin Shedder”, Bunnings BBQ stalwart, holder of a prestigious certificate which reads “The Award for Talking Under Water With a Mouthful of Marbles”, and therefore nicknamed “Marbles”; is in fact the founder of the Somerton Surf Life Saving Club. Here is a short profile Robin Kidney who joined WEST BEACH SLSC in October 1957. He began his swimming career in 1946 as an 8 year old at the Crystal Pool Unley, becoming a member of the Crystal Pool Swimming Club until the cessation in the early 1950’s. After a short audition period with Harry Gallagher (Dawn Fraser’s swimming coach), Robin was advised and encouraged to join a surf lifesaving club. At this time two monumental incidents took place in his life: the Kensington & Norwood council built and opened their new swimming pool and formed the K&N swimming club, and Robin was elected the inaugural captain. At about the same time Mel Cameron (a prominent radio announcer with radio 5DN) who was also president of West Beach SLSC announced that his club was looking for young men to be trained as lifesavers. Robin responded to the call and qualified on the 10th of November 1957. He then progressed to his Instructors Certificate on the 18th January 1959. During his time he represented the club in Senior R&R, belt swims, open surf and surf teams, March past and B boat crew. However, at the beginning of 1960 there was an incident in the proximity of the Somerton Crippled Children’s Home, which indicated the need for water safety cover to be provided in this area. The incident generated conversation between Robin and his mentor Max Gamlin (from West Beach SLSC). Max suggested to Robin that he should do something about it. As a result, the Somerton SLSC was born in September 1960. Assisting Robin was another West Beacher, Phil Lambourne and the two laid the plans for the foundation using the constitution and culture of their former club as the basis. West Beach SLSC donated the first rescue reel to assist with equipment as support for this venture. The new club mounted its first patrol in November 1960 and also performed its first rescue within the next 2 weeks. For services to the Somerton SLSC he was awarded Life Member in 1972, but the biggest tribute he received was in November 2010 when the Mayor of Holdfast Bay Ken Rolland presented him with an historical document outlining Robin’s contribution to the community from 1960 – 2010 with the intention of naming the Somerton SLSC precinct ‘THE ROBIN KIDNEY SURF LIFESAVING RESERVE’ Robin is a TIN SHEDDER and assists other TIN SHEDDERS with the Bunnings BBQ. He is still interested in the development of the WEST BEACH SLSC and and the Somerton SLSC, and is helping to maintain the links between these two great clubs.
