Once the fastest clipper ship in the world, the Cutty Sark now serves as a museum in the heart of the Cutty Sark Gardens. The Gardens provide a proper setting that supports the beauty of the old ship by containing elements of surprise, anticipation, and framing views.

The goal of the Gardens is to create a Public Space that enhances the welfare of the Greenwich population and its visitors through means of honoring the past (The Cutty Sark and adjacent Royal Naval College) and creating a space that will embrace and transition naturally into the future.

River Thames DocksPeople often enter the site from ferries landing at these docks and this entrance should be inviting and help build up the anticipation for the Cutty Sark reveal. The river itself is embraced with caution due to its general lack of ecology.

Old Royal Naval CollegeThe Maritime landmark is a World Heritage Site of England and contains compelling architectural elements and is involved in an abundance of existing foot traffic for the Gardens.

West Entrance The western entrance remains open and creates a unique approach to the site which is also a segment of the London Marathon, an annual biking tour through the city.

Dickson Street

Fayetteville, ArkansasPark

Once a parking lot on the most vibrant street of Fayetteville, Dickson Street Park brings a new-relieving green space to the street. The revitalization of a once prominent stream follows the installation of a park. The site utilizes the element of surprise, attracting pedestrians from the popular street, which allows people to encounter a hidden artsy haven.

The rocks on the site are first revealed in the west. As the site progresses, key elements are revealed and the rocks begin to transition into seats for the amphitheater and finally end up as sculpture bases.

Morningside

Fayetteville, ArkansasVillage

Morningside Village is a planned unit development located in Fayetteville Arkansas that blends itself into the city’s 2035 redevlopment plan. The plan’s goal for the southern half of the city is to raise the density to 10.8 units per acre. This increase density is to help prevent sprawl in hopes to better preserve Northwest Arkansas’s natural beauty and character.

To fit this goal within the site’s 80 acres, currently serving as farmland, a new urbanism model was approached involving zones of low to high density residential, commercial, and recreational. The development is designed to inspire Fayetteville to be more sustainable by showing how convenient, aesthetically pleasing, and economical a new urbanism development would be compared to the current sprawling of north Fayetteville.

Morningside lakeA lake nests in the center of the site and is surrounded by green spaces. This lake was inspired by and evolved from the pond that was once in the middle of farmland. The lake surves the purpose of retaining rainfall within the site boundaries to improve sustainability while providing recreational use for the residents of Morningside Village. Management of stormwater was an important factor going into the site’s design to lower the impact of the ever expanding city.

New UrbanismMorningside Village’s new urbanism model creates an active community with the vast amount of recreational spaces, trails, opportunities for community gardening, and sustainable practices. The streetscapes are inviting and easily walkable which promotes the general welfare of the community. The site contains a higher density than many sprawling suburban areas while also containing a higher quality of living.

Green way trailsTrails link the north and south end of the site while creating several green spaces to be enjoyed. These provide substantial views for many of the residents; while also containing swales that mediate the water flow for stormwater control considering the trailway resides in the 100 year floodplain.

Geographic

System(GIS) Research

Information

Through Geographic Information Systems(GIS), a research of Northwest Arkansas was conducted to develop local model land-use plan that could guide future planning that will promote a transit oriented development in the region. This research was known as the NWA TOD Plan and took several principles into consideration; some of which included population density, civic attractions, major circulation, dense woodlands, agricultural lands, and floodplains.

The goals of the NWA TOD Plan were to conserve natural resources in NWA, create a plan for population growth that allows social equitability and economic viability, maintain and create a green open space plan and buffering system between towns and cities, and implement a transit oriented development corridor linking areas of Northwest Arkansas.

Vela Suites

Port Aransas, TexasHotel, PUD, and Marina

Vela Suites is an exotic development that includes zones of commercial, residential, and natural preservation. The development features hotel resort, convention center, nature center and preservation, restaurants and shops that all nest on the site’s 70 acre marina.

The goal of Vela Suites was to develop an environmentally and sociologically sustainable site that benefits both tourists and locals. Cultivating a well-connected community whose members are involved with promoting each others’ welfare, creating an uplifting atmosphere throughout the site. Notably, the project also shall feature a low carbon footprint, creating an ecologically sensitive site that may preserve and restore the potentially-abundant local ecosystems.

The site is located on the Corpus Christi Ship Channel which lends itself easy access to the Gulf of Mexico and Corpus Christi Bay. Also the site is conveniently adjacent to the Ferry Dock which is one of the only two vehicular accesses to the city.
