    ast and Modern Day Singapore

In the 1960s, Singapore was part of

    he Malaysian Federation. Singapore used

o be rural, and used to be called Sea

own. In WWII, Japan invaded Malaysia

nd took control over the Malaysianederation and the land of the Malaysian

    enninsula, from 1942-1945.The British

nvaded Malaysia (now Japans land) and

here was a battle for Singapore and

    Malaysia. The Japanese surrendered in

945 and the British occupied the land.

ingapore was a city and part of theMalaysian Federation once again.

Lee Kuan Yew was Mayor of Singapore

ity when Singapore was part of the

    Malaysian Federation. In August 1964,

    ingapore finally gained independence.

Mayor Lee Kuan Yew led Singapore to

independence as he and the city left the

Malaysian Federation to start The Republic

of Singapore. Lee Kuan Yew was in the

Prime Ministers position in Singapore from

1964-1990. He was the one who lead

Singapore to be one of the most successful

countries in the world. Modern day

Singapore is home to many world-class

attractions; Singapore has turned into one

of Southeast Asias most popular tourist

destinations. He was it what I would call:

    The father of Modern Singapore.

Currently Singapore is the cleanest city

and country in the world! Without his

    leadership, Singapore may have never

become an independent country or have

become the galleria or mall of Southeast

    Asia.

    he Eiffel tower was built

by Gustave Eiffel in 1889and is probably the most

recognized monument in thewhole world, with its unique styleand ideal location, in the heart ofParis. It stands 324 m tall and ismade completely out of iron andwas the tallest structure in theworld for 41 years until theChrysler Building was built. Butas hard as it is to believe thisbeautiful structure was hated as

soon as it was built! Can youbelieve that?! The Eiffel tower wasbuilt to be the arc entrance for theGreat Exposition in 1889 tocelebrate the 100th anniversary ofthe French Revolution. But it wasgoing to be torn down as soon asthe fair was over because thecitizens of Paris criticized itsunique look. The people of France

postponed the tearing down of theEiffel tower for its purpose that

served in the war, the militaryused it to dispatch Parisian taxisin the First Battle of the Marne. The citizens of Paris still thoughtthis beautiful monument was uglythough. After the war it had beenup for so long that people beganto get used to it and they decidedto keep it up. Now the EiffelTower is the land mark of Parisand has attracted many touristsand caused Pariss number of

visitors to flourish over the pastyears. The Eiffel tower now haseven inspired the Tokyo tower tobe built (a red and white copy ofthe still more magnificent Eiffeltower), which is half way acrossthe world! The Eiffel Tower isdefiantly La Piece Des Resistanceof Paris France.

How long have people been on

    French Land?

There is evidence of people on

French land as early as the 19th

century, but the first permanentsettlement in Paris was byJulius 6

in 52 BC. Paris is located in theNorth of France, a jewel on the

necklace of the river Seine. Itwas very important for a city tobe located near a river in theearlier years because that was

their only source of water, transportation to travel to faraway countries and evenpotentially a mote of protection

against invaders, and Paris wasjust that. This caused more and

more people to come to Francein the past. From a morebusiness point of view, now adays Paris is also home of

many of the biggest businessesworld wide: Air France,LVMH, PPR, the worlds firstand second largest luxury

companies, LOreal, GDF, theworlds largest energycompany, and many others of

    the worlds best.

The population of France(most recently) is 2,190,720with 350,000 foreigners. Parisholds 20% of Frances wholepopulation. There is anassortment of many people inParis from all continents. Thelanguages in Paris are Frenchand English, though English is

not widely spoken in Paris.Paris is not only a beautiful citybut it is also an activity filled

place where you can go onendless tours and site seeing. Itis also a fact that it would take4 entire years to site see thewhole Louvre by onlyspending four seconds at eachexhibit. Also Paris, arguably, also offers a variety of the mostexquisite and delicious foods inthe world. Paris is where to livea life of luxury.

    Recomission of Paris

    Paris hasnt always been the

beautiful city we picture in our

minds when we think of Paris

    today, with its wide straight

    boulevards lined with quaint

cafs. Before the 19th century, Paris

had tiny, narrow streets lined with

half timbered houses. But a rich

    Baron was determined to change

Paris to the most beautiful city in,

arguably, the whole world. Thisgiant project was commissioned

by Napoleon III and led by Baron

    George- Eugene Haussmann. It

took a mere 50 years to complete,

    from 1852- 1900. Whole districts

were destroyed to make way for

    wide boulevards with neo- classic

    stone buildings fringing its edges.

    Haussmanns new design of Paris

    was forcibly criticized by his

contemporaries. Haussmann wasdisliked for a large portion of the

19th century but this opinion of

him was later amended after the

urban style of the old Paris

    became unpopular. Paris has its

    own matchless style that the

    world has come to love.

    In 1835 when Melbourne was

    founded its streets were nearly

deserted. And it was really poor. The people who lived there had

low paying jobs and did what they

could for a nice lifestyle. This

lasted for one and a half decades.

    !Then in 1851 gold was

    discovered all over Melbourne at

    Clunes, Andersons Creek,

    Buninyong, Ballarat, Mt.

    Alexander and Bendigo. By early

1852 ships from all over the world

    were transporting eager miners to

    Melbourne. By 1854 the

    population grew from 80,000 to

    300,000. The value of imported

    goods amazingly reached 18

million euro. To show you the

    zeros: 18,000,000. Everything

    needed for mining and housing

    was being shipped into the

colony. By 1856 over 86 million

grams of gold had been mined.

During the 1850s a total of more

than 100 million euro worth of

gold was taken from the earth!

    This made Adelaide an extremely

    wealthy colony with a huge

    population.

    Because of this gold rush

    Melbourne continues to thrive as

the 2nd biggest city in Australia,

even though it faced a couple of

    From a kid in Melbourne

When I was in Melbourne I went to the beach and

took a dip. It was so cold but definitely worth it. The

wave were just perfect I body surfed the waves and

boogie boarded till I couldnt any more. The beach

was a crystal shade of orange at sunset so we

decided to stay and eat at the beach. We ordered a

delicious meat pie from Garlos (must have) and a

plate of fresh and crumbed fish (actually flake but

they call it fish) and chips. When our food came out

and the waiter put the food on our table the mouth

watering food lasted there for about 5 seconds then it

was in our stomachs. Delicious! The next night myparents were out partying and said We had a great

time with our mates, have to do it again.

How have people changed the landscape?Humans have changed the landscape

in Melbourne by making and upgrading

was made in 1854. Back then it

New Orleans is a bowl of Gumbowith all the different ingredients

simmering together. Lets start at the

beginning. Did you know that New

Orleans is below the sea level? The

French settlers settled on the higher

ground. Because the city was and still

is below the sea they created the

levees to get more land. When

    Hurricane Katrina attacked with full

force it destroyed part of the levees,

flooding the city. As a result, the cityof New Orleans was devastated. Lots

of people left but lots of people came

to help the reconstruction. Now New

    Orleanians welcome and befriend

    everyone based on personality rather

than how they look. Nowadays New

Orleans churns with different types of

people just as the Mississippi river

churns with the history of a

    tremendous city. New Orleans is

shrouded with mystery and I willhelp you solve them.

    THE MAP

    NEW ORLEANS

! I came to New Orleans at the best time; when beads were thrown andenormous floats roamed the streetsMardi Gras. The floats were like elephantswandering the crowded streets and the beads as shining droplets squirtingthrough their trunks. The streets were wires with energy running all the waythrough them. Those few nights I obtained so many beads that my neck wasstrained to keep my head up! All the people on the street had taken out theirspeakers to listen to their own music (mostly jazz). The parents of the childrenput them on the ladders so that they can take in the scene and watch the floatsrumble across the street, while the parents drank beer and talked to their friends.

It was a time of celebrating and partying all night. At the Muses parade, I actuallygot one of the rare, glittered high heeled shoes. Every night right before theparade I would finish a whole king cake on my own because they are justdelectable. I might have been a tourist but I made several friends. This memory hasbeen burned into my mind and will never be forgotten.

    18/75

New Orleans used to be a place

where everyone was happy. It was

known for Mardi gras and its levees.

    Then everything changed on August

    29, 2005 as the meteorologists

    expected a hurricane. Hurricane

Katrina attacked with full force and

destroyed part of the levees, flooding

the city. As a result, the city of New

    Orleans was devastated. People lost

family members, and their homes and

    possessions were all destroyed.

    Ground water was contaminated from

the toxins in household items going

into the draining flood water. 1200

people died from this ordeal and 80%

of the city was flooded but now they

have rebuilt, for example the super

dome had panels rip off and float away

in the wind like a log in a river but now

it is returned to its former glory.

    Hurricane Katrina devastated many and

will never be forgotten. Even now they

feel the damage, but the locals were

brave enough to stick through the

hurricane to keep the vibrant city of

New Orleans safe. Today they are

rebuilding their houses but their spirit

is 10x more than what it was before

    the hurricane.

    PHOTO CORNER

! New Orleans was establishedin 1718 by Sieur de Bienville. By 1822 it

was the capital of the French colony

Louisiana. The 1800s were good years

for New Orleans as it became a major

place for importing cotton on the vastand thriving Mississippi river. The

    creator of Tabasco, Edmund McIlhenny

was a local banker back in 1868. In

New Orleans 1972. In New Orleans

they still have traditional Creole and

Cajun food like Chicken Pot Pie,

    Gumbo and Oysters. New Orleanians

    welcome and be-friend everyone based

on personality rather than how they

look. New Orleans has a Population of

484,674 people and of that 47% is male

and 53% are females. 31% of the

population is younger than 20 years

old, 58% of the population is younger

than 65 years old, and 11% are older

than 64 years old. 29% of the

    The Levees

The French settlers settled on the higher

ground because the city was and still is

below the sea level, so due to their

growing population they had to build the

levees so that they can have more land to

    live on.

The French settlers made the first levees

in New Orleans in the 1720s out of wood.

The levees that we have now were

modernized in 1980s and they are

triangular, made of clay and have a metal

and concrete flood wall on the top.

Now New Orleans is not flooded but

hurricane Katrina destroyed part of the

levees but other than that instance the

new levees have never failed the city.

Osaka is such an awesome place to visit

if you want to relax and enjoy the stay

with excitement. I love going to Dotonbori

Street and eat cheap with reasonable

priced FOOD such as Okonomiyaki (pan

    fried batter cake), Takoyaki (octopus

balls), Fugu (Puffer Fish) and Kitsune-udon!! I was also told about the famous

landmarks there like the Giant Puffer Fish

Sign, Kani Doraku Giant Crab, Glico Man,

and the Kuidaore Tarou. If you want to

shop more then eat, I will recommend the

    longest shopping arcade in Japan,

    you can experience Japanese downtown

shopping style. People in Osaka are very

How people have changed thelandscape of Osaka

These pictures show how peoplehave changed the Osaka T.V. OsakaT.V is a massive T.V station that holds

119 channels in total. Before in theyear 1950, it was an outstandingbuilding with lots of car park spaceand it was marvelous at that time. Theplace might have looked like a normallong building but inside, it had hugeplace for reporting news, places withnew technology to edit the videotaken, cameras, T.Vs and offices.

Then around the year 1990, humanchanged the landscape by rebuildingthe Osaka T.V into a modern typebuilding with improved technology. The government did this because theworld was changing the way their citylooked and Osaka needed to catch upwith the pace. It was a positive changebecause in the 1950 model, it took uptoo much space and land. So, theyrebuilt it and made it tall instead ofwide sideways. But it can also be

taken as a negative change becausethe government needed to spend lotsof money rebuilding the T.V station.

Now because of the rebuilding plan, there was space left for buildings to bebuilt for work or for living and

improved technology with way moreplaces to record broadcasts, tell news, improvise a product, offices forreservations etc. Thanks to this bigrebuild process for Osaka T.V, there ismore space made for new buildings, hospitals and schools to be built toimprove the city of Osaka.

    How have people

    changed the

    landscape?

    Catalans changed the

landscape of Barcelonaby building a monument

    60 meters (197 ft) tall.

    This beautiful monument

    was especially made for

    Christopher Columbus.

    In 1856, Antoni Fages i

    Ferrer thought of making

    a monument for

    Columbus but then he

    didnt go far with his

    plan for 16 years. In

    1872, he got support by

    the mayor. They held a

    contest the Spanish

    artists to submit their

    designs for the

    monument. In the end,

    Gaieta Buigas i Monrava

    won and they made the

    monument with her

    design. Christopher

    Columbus was a famous

    Italian explorer and this

    monument serves as a

    reminder that Barcelona

    is where Christopher

    Columbus reported to

    Queen Isabella and

    Ferdinand after

    Christophers famoustrip. They located the

    monument at the site

    The history of

    Barcelona:Barcelona used to be a

    beautiful city with long rivers,

    lakes, tall and immense

    mountains and stunning

beaches. The problem wasBarcelona was an unknown city

to most people. Then, in 1992,

    everything changed. Barcelona

    hosted The Olympic games, 169

    nations participated and about

    ten thousand athletes joined the

    games. Some of the structures

    they built for The Olympic

    Games were the Olympic ring,

    the Olympic village, the Olympic

    port (for canoeing, sailing,

    rowing), the Olympic swimming

    pool (for water polo, diving,

    swimming, synchronized

    swimming) and the Velodrome

(for soccer, field hockey). I think

    the Olympic game was so

    important to the city because,

they received a lot of income

and they had a lot of tourism

    which changed everything. The

celebration of the 1992 Olympicgames had a vast impact on

    Barcelonas urbanism

    (geography, economy, politics,

    social characteristics, etc.). As a

result, the city of Barcelona is

now a well known city with

    billions of investments and more

    attractions for tourism. Now,

    Barcelona, with a population of

more than 5,800,000 people isone of the most visited cities in

    Europe after London, Paris and

    Rome.

Guess what? I flew to Barcelona last week. It

was a once in a life time experience! You might

have to pay to stay in Barcelona, but not

when you want to play there.

    Barcelontena beach, the most popular

beach in Barcelona. It took me no more

than 1O minutes from the city centre to getthere. You can do further things besides to go

for a dip, there. Wind surfing and kite surfing are

popular and if you are in need for a rest, just lie

down and soak up the warmth in the Spanish sun

with a book. If its Valentines Day or if you go with

your special someone, whats more romantic than

a hand-in-hand walk in the sand? Pack a picnic

and take a stroll around Barceletona Beach and

after, you can chill in a five star luxury hotel

which is a few minutes walk from the

beach. The Arts Hotel isnt that far of a

walk from Barceletona beach. You even

have the view of the beach if you stayed

in the front or the left side of the beach. Ifyou decide to take a settle down in the right

hand side of the hotel, you will have a view of Port

Olympico marina. However, if your room is at the

back of the hotel, you will have a view of Avenue

Icaria. Its pretty expensive, but it was actually

Boston is a city of firsts in

the USA. It has created the

    first public school, university

    and subway system. Ever

    since Harvard University was

built, it has had a huge

    impact on the Boston.

    Harvard was established in

    the year 1636 in Cambridge,

    Massachusetts. So far, 13

    presidents have graduatedfrom Harvard, including

    John F. Kennedy and

    Theodore Roosevelt.

    Harvard, not only offers a

wide range of courses, but is

also one of the Top 10 Ivy

    League Colleges in the world.

    The university has grown

    from only nine students and

    one professor into an

    enrollment of more than

    20,000 degree candidates.

    The population of students in

    Boston has reached 250,000,

leaving the city one of the

    most visited places in the

    United States, because of its

    prestigious colleges.

    Harvard may have an

    endowment of $25.7 billion,

    but because of this, Boston

has grown to be a better city,

    with one of the best

    educational systems in the

    world.

    JUSTIN

    BIEBER

When I flew to Boston in

    the year 2008, I was

    stunned by the beauty of

    the city! I literally almost

    fainted. The beautiful

rivers, the nice parks, theinteresting museums and

just a stroll down any road

can make you want to stay

    there for even longer. The

    amazing smell of Baked

    Beans wafting down the

    historic streets made me

    head right into a restaurant

    and order a plateful of

them. Boston is one of the

    cities with the most

    exquisite restaurants. You

    cannot go to Boston

    without eating in a local

    restaurant. Boston is like a

    fudge sundae with different

flavors of ice cream. It is a

    phenomenal city; and from

reading this, I hope you are

    already planning your visit.

    POPULATION AND RESOURCES

Boston was one of the first cities in the

    United States. The Puritans discovered

Boston on September 17, 1630 and the

city was incorporated as a city on March

4, 1822. It is the capital city of

Massachusetts and is located in New

England near the North Atlantic Ocean.

Boston is well known for education and

financial services. Boston has a wide

    range of educational opportunities. It

has the best colleges in the world and a

variety of jobs. The city is actually one oftop 10 tourist attractions in North

America. It has deep harbors and is

    actually famous for its geographic

    position.

Boston, as I said, is well known for

financial services. There are a lot of

major industries and businesses in the

city. Such as, Fleet Bank which was

purchased by Bank of America in 2004,

    investment firms like Fidelity

Investments and the John HancockFinancial Services.

    Boston established the first college

(Harvard University) and the first Public

School (Boston Latin School) in America.

Thats why it is known as a center for

education. The housing is expensive, but

is very luxurious and Boston has a fair

amount of money. You can find almost

any kind of job in this city. It is unusual

for someone to not find one in a city like

    Boston.

The city not only has a wide range of

    education, but also transportation! They

have an expansive network of subways, bus routes, commuter rail lines and if

you dont want to take either of them,

    just wave a taxi down.

Boston had an estimated population of

620, 536 people in the year 2009. The

percentage of the nationalities that are

    represented are 7.52 % Asians, 25.33%

    African Americans, and 54.48% Whites.

Boston not only has many opportunities

but is also considered history. Frommy perspective, we should feel lucky to

have a city like Boston. It has been here

for hundreds of years and is still a big

    success.

    THE BIG DIG.

The Big Dig was the biggest and most expensive highway project in the United States. The cost was

around 22 billion dollars and it involved about a third of Boston.

During the construction, they replaced the Central Artery (I-93) with an underground tunnel which

took a lot of work to do. It was the biggest construction project that Boston ever went through. They

added two new bridges over the Charles River, one of which is the Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge. They have

also created more than 300 acres of open land.

The construction started in September 1991 and it ended on January 13, 2006. After the construction,

on July 10, 2006, there was a tragedy that happened. A 3 ton ceiling panel fell on a car, killed the

passenger and left the driver severely injured. Over 200 complaints were filed because of leaks, cost

overruns, quality concerns and safety violations.

oston was basically a mess during the construction, but it was all worth it after the project. Some saythat $167 million is saved each year as a result of the Big Dig. So thanks to the Big Dig, Boston has

improved its economic productivity, there are way more roads, less traffic and the city is even more

    walkable.

    YOU GOTTA LOVE BOSTON.

Boston is like a Daffodil that blooms earlier than all the flowers in the garden. It established the first

public school, college and subway system in the whole of America. It is also known for its educational

opportunities because of the fact that it is one of the cities with the best schools in the United States.

Boston was nicknamed Beantown because of its amazingly cooked Baked Beans. Aside from beans,

they serve the best seafood in a restaurant called Legal Sea Foods which you can find in Prudential

Center and BLA(Boston Logan Airport). Because of the citys resources and wealth, it has come to an

overwhelming population of 620, 536 people. During the year of 1991, the government of Boston

decided to start the biggest and most expensive highway project, which was called the Big Dig. It took a

lot of people to finish this task, mostly because it involved a third of Boston. The constructions main

purpose was to replace the Central Artery (I-93) with an underground tunnel so there would be lesstraffic, more roads and the city would become even more walkable. As you can see, Boston is a very

busy city, which is why in continues to keep its economy and wealth in good shape.

    molasses, salt, pepper, dry

    mustard, ketchup, Worcestershire

sauce and brown sugar. Bring the

beans. Pour in just enough of the

reserved bean water to cover the

beans. Cover the dish with a lid

    or aluminum foil.

    5) Bake for 3 to 4 hours in the

preheated oven, until beans are tender.

Remove the lid about halfway through

cooking, and add more liquid if

    A meeting in the past

    Meetings in the past

    were very basic and

    were very inconvenient,

    because they werent

very private and couldeasily be heard by the

    public.

    -DUBAI-

    March 2011

WELCOME TO THE FUTUREYouve all probably heard of thefuture in Sci-Fi movies but youhavent seen the future until youve

What Dubai used to be like

    Although Dubai is a

    virtual paradise now, it used

    to be a vast desert

    wasteland. But now its a

    magnificent city.

During the 1991 gulf warDubai was in need of

    protection in order to keep

the city safe so then it could

further develop so they put a

    huge border fence and the

    security was enforced by the

    British army until the gulf

    war ended.

    With the discovery of rich

oil sources in 1996 the UAE

    borders Dubai, and Abu

    Dhabi have become wealthy

    countries because of their

    massive exports of oil to

    foreign countries. With all of

    the oil exports Dubai has

    created a steady income of

    money into their economy

and with that they made a

    virtual paradise with

UNBELEIVABLE architecturelike the 7-star hotel Burj Al

    Arab, the tallest building in

the world Burj Dubai and the

    most amazing marina the

    Dubai Marina.

    Although Dubai has had a

    slow start into development

during the gulf war but after

    the war Dubai has

    developed into a city that

    only people could dream of

in such a fast rate of

    production, Dubai is a city

    worth living in.

    The changing landscape

    Dubais landscape has changed

drastically ever since the early discovery

of oil in the UAE which has lead to a lot of

changes in the Arabian desert now.

Before the desert was just a plain old

desert but when Dubai made an oil

company to extract the oil from the earth

the desert around the UAE is filled with oil

extractors and off the coast with oil rigs

doing the same job. With all of the oil

extractors the desert has been partially

reshaped to make space for the company

and the oil extractors, but that is not the

    only reason Dubais landscape has

    changed.

Off the coast of Dubai they have

made 3 extraordinary projects usingartificial islands. These islands are made

from sand or earth that is dumped in a

specific concentrated area that form a

specific shape. These 2 projects called

The Palms and The World and the

    Dubai Waterfront have reshaped the

map of Dubai because map makers

making maps of Dubai had to remake the

maps so then they fit in with the present

time. The reason for these islands is to

expand and make new places for people

to live so then the entire city is not

cramped in one location and is spread

    out widely.

The buildings of Dubai has also

changed by taking up land, some of these

buildings are national landmarks like the

Dubai Marina, Burj Dubai, Dubai Mall, and

the 7 star hotel Burj Al Arab.

Population & ResourcesDubai has had early evidence of

nomads living there in the year of 1059

but it was not the original and permanent

settlement of Dubai. It was not until the

year of 1799 when it was the first

    recorded history of permanent settlement

of Dubai Town and not12 until the 19th

    century when Dubai was formally

established by the Al Abu Falasa clan.

Dubai is a coast line city and the earlysettlers chose this place because of its

huge amount of water source on the

    coast line.

Dubai has 2 major industries called

the Galadari Group & and the Al Futtaim

group, these industries has contributed to

shaping Dubai to how it is today and the

city might never have made it with out

    these industries. With Dubais discovery

of oil the major resources and exports of

Dubai is petroleum gas, gasoline and

petroleum products. Along with all of the

resources the people who live in Dubai

    have many job opportunities like

    financing, agriculture, banking,

    construction, education and security.

Dubai is expanding in population, as

of now Dubai is at a population of

860,000 (est. 2011) along with their

    nationalities such as Indian, Pakistani,

    Bangladeshi, Egyptian, Jordanian,

Iranian, Filipino, and other Arab. With

    them bringing them their religious

    practices, which are Muslim, Christianity,

    Catholicism, and Hinduism. While Dubai

is excelling in its economy the streets of

Dubai are filled with languages such as

English, Hindi, Urdu, Persian, and Filipino.

    ANECDOTE

Dubai was on my top 5 best cities to

visit list and I literally ask my parents

if we could go there every time we had

a vacation opportunity. When I went

to Dubai I was thrilled so much not

only because I heard so much cool

things about Dubai but I also got a

chance to meet my childhood friend

Matthew there in a unexpected event

where we meet each other in one of

the hotels we both stayed in. We had

a lot of fun on day 1 we went to the

Dubai mall and went buying a few

Playstation2 games due to the fact

that each room in the hotel we were

staying in had a Playstation2. After we

bought the games we went and looked

at the Worlds Largest Aquarium and itwas fascinating to see this much fish

inside a humungous aquarium right in

front of me, my friend and I were

dazed by the unimaginable sight of the

Aquarium. We stayed for a good 10

minutes before we decided to try the

indoor Ski Slope they had inside the

mall. We were all set to Ski down the

slope and we counted down 5,
