As I look back on 2012 highlights it was a good golfing year. This year, we had the largest field for the Mid-Amateur so we’ll keep the later date. We were also encouraged with an increased participation of clubs playing in the State Team Matches. Therefore, we plan on staying with the format for another year to further evaluate the results. Andrea Kraus took home 3 medals winning the Mid- Amateur, Amateur and the Senior Championships. Congratulations Andrea for a great year. At our fall luncheon, we honored Joan McGinnis with the Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her many years of service. Joan was on our original board and the only person still actively involved by running the Slope and Rating Committee. Thanks, Joan for all your service since 1995. Last year, Carolyn Hudson, Patsy DiMuzio, Deb Watkins, and Judi Hans with Kim’s help contacted all the clubs in Maryland to identify delegates. This year we are going further by hosting a Delegate Day on March 9 th , with a meeting, lunch, and 9 holes of golf. See further information on page six of this newsletter. The Executive Committee has been working to plan all the tournaments for 2013. Please check the schedule on the web and newsletter to learn where and when these events are being held. There have been a few minor changes to eligibility requirements, so read the entry forms of each tournament before you enter. One change that many requested involves the handicap differentials allowed between partners. In particular play in the following tournaments applies; Mixed Two Ball, the Two-Woman Mid- Handicap, and the Two Woman. Before you realize, spring golf will be here, so plan on playing in at least one Maryland State tournament. We look forward to seeing many players. Some committee members are again attending a 4 day rules school in March, so we are prepared. The one day rules seminar conducted by Jean Mulcahey will be at Argyle Country Club on Monday April 29 th so sign up, and then you will be prepared. Further details are available on the website as well as page 10 of this newsletter. As always you can reach us through the office with any concerns, questions, suggestions or even “praise”. On behalf of the committee I wish you all a wonderful year of golf. See you soon. THREE MSGA-WD VICTORIES IN 2012 FOR KRAUS

Maryland State Golf Association Women’s Division Page 2

It was quite a year for Andrea Kraus in MSGA-WD Championships. For the first time in history, Kraus won the Maryland Women’s Mid-Amateur, Amateur, and Senior Amateur in the same year. In the Mid-Am, she got a jump start on the field after firing a one-under-par 71 to lead by seven strokes. Kraus followed up her first round with a score of 74, and a nine stroke victory. She attributed her win to superb play in all aspects of her game and making 8 birdies over the course of two rounds. In the Amateur held at Norbeck CC, she fired a qualifying round of three-under-par 69.

Her round included eagles at the 5th and 17th as well as birdies on 11, 14, and 18. During match play, Kraus defeated Carol Davies, Lauren Kim, and Stefanie Herndon to end up in the final round of the Championship Flight. In the finals, Kraus played Elisabeth Herzfeld, a former player on the Towson University golf team where Andrea had coached. Kraus would defeat Herzfeld 4&2. This marked Andrea’s third MSGA-WD Amateur title. Kraus’ final MSGA-WD victory was at The Timbers of Troy GC in the Women’s Senior. Once again, she had the lead after the first round with an even par 72 and her closest competitor was Lisa Schlesinger who was five strokes behind. Schlesinger and Kraus were paired together for the final round and Kraus knew she had to continue her strong play to maintain the lead. Kraus, the defending champion, managed to edge Schlesinger by 1 stroke to win. Kraus not only excelled in local events, but qualified for 3 USGA Championships—the Mid-Am, Amateur, and Senior. At the Mid-Am, she advanced to the quarterfinals in match play, but lost to the eventual winner of the tournament.

Medalist Andrea Kraus birdied 3 of the first 5 holes -- winning two of them -- and was not headed in turning back Elisabeth Herzfeld, who put on a gritty performance in her first match-play tournament at the 91st Women's Amateur held at Norbeck CC on July 19. Herzfeld, from Baltimore, a graduate of Towson University, is currently working on a MBA in marketing at Towson and the University of Baltimore. Not content with winning a three-for-one playoff for the final spot in a 16-player championship draw, the 24-year-old never saw the 18th hole again as she took out three former champions, defender

Kaitlyn Rohrback, Christy Larrimore, and Caroline Sweet. Never more than 2-down, Herzfeld got to within one with a 45-foot "snake" for birdie at the 7th and again at the 10th when Kraus' only mistake led to a missed green and two putts at the 10th. It started coming apart for Herzfeld at the 13th where she missed a six-footer for par, at the 14th where a par putt stopped on the lip, and after a half at 15, it ended on the 16th. Thirty-two players began play of the 14th Women’s Open on Monday, October 8th at River Marsh Golf Club in Cambridge, MD. The field was comprised of fourteen professionals and eighteen amateurs, six of whom are in high school. River Marsh is a beautiful course whose 18th hole runs parallel to the Choptank River. The course played to 5,628 yards, par of 71, with a number of challenging holes. While the drizzly weather, clouds and wind beleaguered the golfers, Symetra Tour (formerly the Futures Tour) player, Whitney Neuhauser of Barboursville, VA fired a 2

under par 69 the first day. Wootton High School freshman Delaney Shah shot a one-over 72 to lead the amateurs. Clearly, the player to beat was Whitney who began the second round with a 3 shot lead over Heather Angell and Delaney Shah, and a 4 shot lead over pro Ashley Grier and amateur Rachel Lee. She began the day with a tap-in birdie at hole #1, followed by birdies at 3 and 15, but a double bogey at hole #12 (382 yard par 4) followed by a bogey at the 139 yard, par 3 13th hole gave her the even par score. It was enough to edge out Angell who shot another one over 72 (144). In the amateur category, high school student Rachel Lee shot 73-73—146 to tie Shah’s 72-74—146, but a match of cards went Rachel’s way. Lee credited her mother who served as a caddie with keeping her calm, reading putts, and having fun on the course. Whitney placed second in this event last year at Columbia CC and has come to the conclusion that Maryland is kind to her as her best Symetra Tour finish was a personal best 8th place finish this year at Musket Ridge GC. -Reported by Melly Tucker

KRAUS EDGES SCHLESINGER IN SENIOR

The 44th Women’s Senior was held at The Timbers at Troy GC on August 13-14. The course played 5,125 yards and although it was not lengthy, it challenged many with undulating fairways and abundant water hazards. After a shotgun start with a thirty-six player field, Andrea Kraus shot the low round of the day, an even-par 72. She was paired with Lisa Schlesinger and past champion Meg Giusti. Schlesinger trailed Kraus by five after shooting a 42-35—77 in her opening round. Schlesinger and Kraus, two highly competitive players, were again paired together for the second round. Schlesinger

turned up the heat after making an eagle at the par 5 second hole and a birdie at the par 4 fourth hole to post a front nine score of 33. Meanwhile, Andrea posted a 37 on the front nine, making Lisa only 1 stroke behind overall. They battled it out on the back nine, but Kraus stayed one stroke ahead for the win. Schlesinger finished with an exceptional round of 69 and Kraus finished with a 73. AGE DIVISION WINNERS: 50-54 : Denise Cooper (Winter’s Run); 55-59: Diane Herndon (Argyle); 60-64: Pat Lonergan (Redgate); 65-69: Karen Smith (Chester River); 70+: Joan Winchester (Rolling Road)

KRAUS PREVAILS IN THE MID-AMATEUR

Elyse Smidinger, from Crofton Country Club, captured her 3rd Maryland State Junior Girl’s Championship title. After shooting an even par 71 on day one at the University of Maryland Golf Club in College Park, MD, Smidinger completed round two with a 72 for a 143 total of the 2-day, stroke play championship. The course played at a yardage of 5,466 and there were 30 players in the field. Lauren Kim, from Waverly Woods Golf Club, shot a 75-73—148, and finished overall runner-up. Smidinger, 18, a recent graduate of Arundel High School, polished off a total of 6 birdies over the two day event. Three years

ago, Elyse earned her first Junior Girls Championship at Eisenhower Golf Course by five shots. Last year at Chartwell Golf & Country Club, she also won by 5 shots. Smidinger is currently a freshman at the University of Denver. She is playing golf for the Pioneers and competed in four tournaments during the fall season. DIVISION WINNERS: 16-18: Stephanie Bosdosh (Holly Hills) 14-15: Delaney Shah (Blue Mash) 13 & Under: Sydney Mills (Chartwell) 9 Hole: Eunice Sung (Blue Mash) -Reported by Judi Hans

The 5th Annual Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship held at the scenic Worthington Manor Golf Club on June 5-6 was won by Andrea Kraus of Hayfields Country Club. Andrea shot 71-74—145 to finish one over par. Carol Davies came in second shooting a 78 the first day and 76 the second day. Carol’s round the first day was fairly routine, striking the ball well and hitting a fair number of greens. Her second round of 76 proved to be a little more exciting. While many found the greens a bit challenging—

not Carol—rolling in a 50-footer to birdie #2 and then making two more birdie putts of 30 and 20 feet to go along with three bogies for an even par front of 36. She followed that with a double bogey, par, bogey finish to shoot a 40 on the back ending with a 154 total for the two days. Lisa Schlesinger finished with a disappointing 78-79—157 claiming third low gross. The 15th Two-Woman Team Mid-Handicap Championship was played at Prospect Bay Country Club on a beautiful autumn day. Twenty-eight teams were divided into three flights. The champions were Kathy Byrnes and Cindy Hauser of Old South CC with a great team score of 78. Following right behind with a 79 was the runner-up team of Phyllis Jenkins-Stevenson and Kathy Henshaw of the University of Maryland GC. There was also close competition within each flight. The championship flight winners, with an 81, were Gretchen

Stoneman from Waverly Woods GC and Mary Lou Harris from Bowie G&CC. The runner-up prize, after a match of cards, went to Mary Shirley and Judith Harlow of Crofton CC who teamed for an 83. Honorable mention, also with 83s, went to Theresa Shingler and Ellen Roche of Kenwood G&CC - last year’s champions – and Sherry Leisenring and Carolyn Bigelow from Prospect Bay. First flight winners, Carolyn Tabor and Richeeta Johnson from the University of Maryland GC had a great score of 82. Maggie Whall and Sharon Burlas, both from Argyle CC, were one shot away at 83. In the second flight, fellow competitors of Susan Ponchock and Helen Witt, who play out of Prospect Bay CC, said the pair made several putts from 30 or 40 feet to shoot their winning score of 90. The runners-up were Patsy DiMuzio and Pat Barrett from Woodmore with a close score of 92. -Reported by Joan Heiss

COLLINS AND RATCLIFFE, CHAMPIONS AGAIN

Stacey Collins, Baltimore Country Club, and Sally Ratcliffe, Elkridge Club, won the 19th annual Two Woman Team Championship held at The Suburban Club in Baltimore on Thursday, October 4th. They finished with a one-under par 71 on the 5,499 yard course which played much longer due to heavy rain two days before. The team made birdies on holes 7, 9, 12, and 15. It was just last year that team Collins-Ratcliffe won this tournament for the first time at Manor CC. In both 2011 and 2012 Collins and Ratcliffe managed to come from the First Flight to win the overall Championship. Collins and Ratcliffe have

played in this events as a team for the last three years. In besting the other 31 teams, the winners had a two stroke margin over the runners-up for the field Katie Wille, Maryland G&CC, and Denise Cooper, Winter's Run GC, who finished with a 73. FLIGHT WINNERS:

CHANGES FOR 2013 TOURNAMENTS

For each Championship, the MSGA-WD requires players to be a member of a MSGA member club. The handicap

index must be at the MSGA member club shown on the entry form, and must be viewable on the verification site of www.msgawomen.org

In the Mixed Two-Ball, if the difference between a team’s two course handicaps exceeds 10.0, as of July 15, 2013, the higher course handicap will be reduced to keep the difference 10.0. Therefore, all teams will be eligible for gross and net prizes.

In the Two-Woman and Mid-Handicap Two-Woman, the difference in handicap must not exceed 10.0

The purse for the Maryland Women’s Open will be at least $10,000 regardless of how many professionals participate

The flight method for the Amateur Championship has changed slightly. The low 16 players form the Championship flight. The remaining qualifiers are divided into flights (Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth) according to their most current handicap indexes and are seeded according to their qualifying scores.

FATHER-DAUGHTER TEAM WIN THE MIXED

The Mixed Two Ball was played at Hillendale CC on July 31 with 50 teams in the field. Playing at 8:00 and finishing at 73, Anita Venner (Redgate) and Steve Martin (University of Maryland) had to wait until all the teams had posted scores until either winning or having a play-off. Playing in the 11:20 group, Audra McShane, and dad, Neil, of Cattail Creek came in with a 73, as did University of Maryland team Lauren Smith and Don Meyer from the 11:30 tee time. This was the first play-off in the 10-year history of this event. On the par 5 #1, the McShanes reached the green in 2 as Audra had hit her tee shot across the creek. The other 2 teams arrived on the green in 3. McShanes had the first putt and carded a birdie 4 with a tap-in. The

other 2 teams sunk putts of about 15 and 7 feet to birdie as well. On the second hole, Audra and Neil were the only group on in 2 and brought home the

Championship with a 2 putt as the others failed to 1 putt. As a side note, the Venner-Martin team was not going to move an inch while they awaited a possible play-off. In 2009 at Baltimore CC, they had posted a great round in the morning but left the course after playing. They were called to come back for the play-off but traffic would not allow their timely return and had to settle for 2nd gross. NET WINNERS: Hae Han (Montgomery) & Shane Correll (Falls Road) -Reported by Melly Tucker

MARYLAND HANDICAP PROGRAM—GN21

As you post scores at your club and through your online profiles this year, you might notice a new look and feel to the system. With the help of our technology partner, GolfNet, the Maryland Handicap Program has transitioned our clubs to a completely web-based handicap system (GN21). The new system will help streamline score posting through automatic handicap revisions on the 1st and 15th of each month and real-time score posting that allows scores posted at the club, as well as online, to show immediately in your scoring record. In addition to simplifying the process of score posting, the new system has many benefits that go beyond calculation of handicap index. These features include: NEW FEATURES: -Game Tracker allows golfers to post scores hole-by-hole and enter information about fairways hit, greens in regulation, putts, sand saves, birdies, etc. Results are accumulated in your online profile and you can track your progress throughout the year. -Message system that allows golfers to send messages to other golfers in the system without knowing their email address. -Buddy lists can be created to easily communicate with friends and golfers you play with regularly, as well as follow trends with their handicap. -A Calendar feature that allows the golfer to enter and keep track of personal events, tee time reminders, or upcoming lessons. -Product upgrades throughout the year, with many new features close to being released, such as a smart phone app for posting scores and managing your handicap from your mobile device. Each golfer has access to these features through their online profile at www.msganetwork.org. If you have questions about how to access the new system, or your unique username and password, please contact your golf shop. Thanks for your support of the Maryland Handicap Program, and golf in Maryland.

CLUB DELEGATES Roughly half of the Maryland State Golf Association member clubs do not have a current Women’s Delegate. Each member club of the MSGA is entitled to one women’s representative. Delegates assist the MSGA-WD by sharing information with ladies at their home club about tournaments, events, and services provided. In return, delegates receive an invitation to the Annual Luncheon held in November. Delegates also have voting rights when changes are made to the MSGA-WD. The MSGA-WD will be hosting its 1st Delegate Day on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Old South Country Club. If you are interested in becoming a delegate for your club, please contact Kim Daniels at [email protected] or 410-653-5300.

ANNUAL 4-LADY INVITATIONAL A SUCCESS

The 7th 4-Lady Invitational was held at the Country Club at Woodmore on July 9. Bonnie Lennox and Patsy DiMuzio, co-Chairmen, pronounced this year’s tournament the most successful yet, with the most teams ever participating and the largest profit ever raised of $11,032.00. These funds will be used to support junior girls golf in the state of Maryland. This includes the junior golf teams and their two annual tournaments—the Poindexter Cup and the Mid Atlantic Challenge. Funds will also go to help those junior golfers going on to play on college teams. All of this year’s success was achieved at a most challenging time after severe storms ripped through the area the week before. The storms left downed trees and debris everywhere. Electricity was only restored a few days before the tournament. However, the staff of the Country Club at Woodmore had the course in very playable condition. It was cart paths only but everyone enjoyed the day, the prizes and a delicious lunch. We hope to see everyone next year at Talbot Country Club in Easton! Be sure to mail your entries in early since entries are accepted on a first come first serve basis!

The 2012 MSGA-Women's Division Annual Luncheon was held at Crofton CC on Thursday, November 1st. A total of 47 people attended the luncheon including past MSGA-WD Board members, MSGA Board and staff, delegates, and USGA representatives to name a few. During the luncheon the MSGA-WD congratulated its 2012 Champions, thanked its volunteers, and presented a Distinguished Service Award. Every other year the MSGA-Women’s Division recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to golf either in time, or effort working on

promoting the game in Maryland. This year the Executive Committee selected Joan McGinnis. All the letters we received supported our choice, mentioning her wealth of knowledge and experience of the game. Joan has been an active member of MSGA-WD since its creation in 1995, serving on the first board for eight years until 2003. During that time she was instrumental in restarting the popular State Team Matches. The first year required a play in round with 33 teams registered. Joan ran other tournaments and served as the Corresponding Secretary. Joan grew up in Catonsville attending Trinity School followed by Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University). Growing up she learned to play golf with her father, a competitive golfer at the Naval Academy. She really didn’t play golf again until she married Mike McGinnis. The first year they lived in California helping her mother and step-father start a business. Returning to Maryland, Mike went to work for McCormick Spices. Playing in competitive golf and winning led to Mike turning professional. His first job was Dulaney Springs GC, then Eagle Hill GC, neither of which are in existence today. Mike then began his career at Holly Hills Country Club. Joan began a career in real estate and can still tell you what Frederick has to offer. During these years Joan was very active playing golf which lead to her joining other women golfers in forming the Women’s Division of MSGA. Joan brought a wealth of knowledge and experience along with her unfailing generosity plus her great sense of humor. She has been both a mentor and a model for countless women golfers. While serving on the Board she became interested in rating golf courses, attending the first of many rating seminars. Joan is still active with a group rating courses in the western part of the state and the Baltimore area. In 2005 when Jean Opeka stepped down as Coordinator of all the women’s rating teams, Joan agreed to take on the job. From 2005 to present she has assigned courses, assisted with training plus recruiting of six teams. Under her leadership there have been 90 courses rated or rerated. No one has spent more active time serving the MSGA-Women’s Division. From its conception to the present Joan has been a delightful, willing, able and ever pleasant worker for the good of golf in Maryland. -Reported by Marilyn Snight

New changes and a guide to using the rulebook were the chief topics of discussion during the annual rules seminar of the MSGA-WD at the Elkridge Club in Baltimore, April 30. Ann Guiberson, USGA Regional Affairs Director for this area, and Clyde Luther, nationally recognized rules official, served as facilitators. Jean Mulcahey, rules chairman for the Women's Division, and a highly regarded international rules official in her own right, was in charge of the event which attracted some 90 women for a day-long program. In her introduction, Guiberson explained that the USGA and the Royal and Ancient of Scotland (R&A) are the custodians of the Rules of Golf and the Rules of Amateur Status. Through their efforts, players around the world all play by the same rules. These rules are reviewed and revised where necessary every four years.

The process includes separate meetings of the USGA and the R&A rules committees and their suggestions, along with input from other golfing organizations world wide are brought to a quadrennial meeting of representatives of the two governing bodies which make the final decisions. Although the rules committees officially meet every four years, theirs is an on-going work -- looking ahead in four-year increments -- with an eye toward keeping the rules clear, comprehensive, and relevant. This year, for instance there is a new "Quick Guide to the Rules," in the front of the new rulebook that highlights some commonly encountered rules situations. This is followed by a new section on etiquette, and a set of definitions that are essential to learn in order to understand the rules. As for the new changes, 80% are for clarifying rulings. One change (18-2b) exonerates the player from penalty if his ball moves after it has been addressed when it is known or virtually certain that he did not cause the ball to move. For example, if a gust of wind moves the ball after it has been addressed, there is no penalty and the ball is played from its new position. -- Reported by John Stewart

In the Championship flight once again it was Norbeck and Argyle. As they did last year, a tightly fought match between opponents who are rivals and friends. At Argyle the first group was Norbeck’s Liz Hall and Beth Ennis vs. Argyle’s Carol Davies Lille and Jane Curtin. Argyle got off to an early 2 up lead but Norbeck came back to tie. The match was back and forth with 3 players making birdies on the front. Carol had 2, Beth had 2 and Liz 1, but Argyle took the front 3up. On the back Jane hit the flag stick on #14 for an easy birdie. The match was closed out at #16 with Argyle getting all 3 points. The second match was Norbeck’s Susie Heiser and Deb Pearson vs. Argyle’s Shelley Gaffin and Mary Jordan (M.J.) Nogay. This match was closely contested with neither side being up more than 1 hole at a time. Shelley chipped in on #14 for a birdie – Argyle’s lucky hole. Hole 17 was a tie after Deb’s long putt stopped at the hole for a par and M.J. chipped in. On 18, a par 5, all players were on or close in 3 to try for a birdie. Deb again had a long putt stop at the hole and M.J. had a 3 footer to tie. At Norbeck the first match included Lisa Schlesinger and Toni

Yowell from Norbeck and Christine Bechtel and Emily Kwak from Argyle. Lisa pared #1 and #3 and birded #4. On #5, a par 5, Toni sank a long putt for a birdie. Not to be out done, Christine from Argyle holes her own birdie on #7 a par 3. But it was short lived with Lisa again sticking it to the flag for a birdie on #8, a par 5. Christine answered on #9 with a par and the front went 3 up for Norbeck. It was a tough day for the Argyle team and Norbeck took all 3 points. The second match was close from beginning to end. The teams finished the front each with ½ a point. Norbeck held on to win the match earning 2 ½ points. Last year it was the same scenario but this year a different outcome. Argyle won 6 ½ to Norbeck’s 5 ½. 1st Flight Winner – Maryland Golf – 8 ½ vs. Prospect Bay – 3 ½ 2nd Flight Winner - Manor - 9 ½ vs. Towson - 2½ 3rd Flight Winner - Redgate - 6½ vs. Chevy Chase - 5½
