    2nd Sunday in Ordinary

Time Our faith is not just about ideas. It’s really about having an encounter with God and, in particular, the Risen

Christ! Once we give ourselves over to the notion of God’s presence, we have to train ourselves to listen for God’s voice and be attentive to God’s call. Having companions on our faith journeys is so incredibly important as they can help us fine-tune our listening skills and discern God’s voice from others we may be hearing. Faith is all about having these profound encounters not only with God but with our brothers and sisters, and creation itself. Anyone or anything that is alive with God’s presence becomes an occasion for God to speak and call us to deeper graces and experiences. “Come, and you will see.” The example and teaching of Jesus, the lives of the saints, those living among us and those glorified in heaven, and the wonder and beauty of creation can all serve to help us listen more clearly and assist in positioning ourselves for this profound God meeting. It is an encounter that can quickly and easily lead to a friendship and intimate intertwining of our souls to their Maker, making a claim on us like no other. Then, the Word of God moves from being just a body of ideas to something we simply accept and do. The person of Jesus Christ swiftly moves from being just a good prophet in word and deed to the incarnate presence of God Himself, the Lamb of God. The voice leads us to the Person behind it. The Gospel is hard to follow. We can intellectually debate whether what Jesus said is really what we are asked to do. The Gospel ideas do not always make sense in our practical, secular world. The person of God always does. We can debate the practicality and sense of ideas and doing so often keeps the more difficult ones at a safe distance away from us. Jesus said to love our enemy, but we really don’t need to do that, our minds try to convince us. It just doesn’t make sense. Yet, if we are truly in love with the God who is behind the voice of those words, they make perfect sense. Our deep and intimate love of this God would even find us laying down our lives for Him if necessary. Speak Lord, your servant is listening. ©LPi

    From Father Kevin… Dear Parishioners,

“Come, and you will see.” Jesus says.

The Christmas season celebrates the Incarnation of the Lord. Jesus really shares our life wholly, and redeems our whole existence by His life, death and resurrection. We now begin liturgical Ordinary Time when we, like the disciples in our Gospel today, spend time with the Lord so that we might learn His way of life. Meeting Jesus and learning His ways influence our respect for one another, our concern for the ecology of the natural world and for our human society. He gives us hope and courage to meet the day-to-day challenges. He offers us a way back to life when we have chosen sin or death. And these answers are really only found when we “stay with the Lord.” The gift of the Holy Spirit helps us to stay with the Lord and with each other. We are more than an accidental conglomeration of individual believers. We are a Church, an assembly of those incorporated by their faith in Jesus. We form the Body of Christ for our time and place. Stewardship reminds us that the gifts God has given to each of us are unique in themselves. No assembly of believers, no church can rest on the gifts of a few people alone. When we all come together in giving back to God from the gifts and talents He has given us, we grow in our life with Christ and each other. We become vibrant and strong as the Body of Christ. Our calling is to cultivate the life and gifts of each member.

Next weekend we can extend our care to the people of El Salvador. Since 1964, the Diocese of Cleveland has had a special commitment to the Central American nation of El Salvador (The Savior). We currently support two diocesan priests, Fr. Paul Schindler and Fr. John Ostrowski serving two large parishes This team

serves the pastoral needs of more than 100,000 people in the western cities of La Libertad and Teotepeque. To read more about the mission, visit https://www.dioceseofcleveland.org/offices/mission-office/cleveland-latin-american-mission . The El Salvador Latin American Collection, taken up in diocesan parishes each year is their main source of support. Your help is needed to support these missionaries and the people they serve. We will have separate basket on the gift table for this special collection. Hopefully you will receive the parish envelopes before next weekend. If not, please mark another envelope for the collection. Please be as generous as possible.

Important: Internet/e-mail update There are many scams on the internet, and you may be receiving e-mails from members of St. Justin Staff. Please be advised that no one on the staff will ever ask for money or services via e-mail or text.

Please note, the Office and the Church will be closed on Monday, January 18 for Martin Luther King Day. The church will be open for Mass at 8:30 AM.

    Family Perspective

Both Samuel and the two disciples from the gospel begin a journey that will change the trajectory of their lives and bring them to the limits of their abilities, demanding all who they are and even, in the case of Andrew and Peter, their very lives. Very often in family life, we are asked to sacrifice for the sake of taking care of our family members. We recall in the Gospel today that we do not walk on the path of sacrifice alone. Though we cannot see where our own journey of faith is leading, we can be assured of the presence and friendship of the same divine companion walking ahead of us to show the way. How do you experience the voice of God calling you?

    Year of St. Joseph

Pope Francis has proclaimed a special “Year of St. Joseph,” beginning on the Solemnity of the Immacu-late Conception 2020 and extending to the same feast in 2021. In a new Apostolic Letter entitled Pa-tris corde (“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis de-scribes Saint Joseph as a tender and lov-ing, obedient father who is creatively cou-rageous, a working father, a father in the shadows. This Apostolic Letter marks the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pope Pius IX’s declaration of St. Joseph as Patron of the Uni-versal Church. Please monitor diocesan communi-cations for further details on ways to celebrate this year in your parishes.
