NEWSLETTER No. 28 13th September 2019
Dear Parents, Friends and Students
On Wednesday all families received a letter from our
School Board Chair, Mr Gavin Hogg, announcing my
appointment as Principal of Good Shepherd Primary
School, Lockridge. I will be taking up my appointment on
the 1st January 2020. I will be leaving this school with
some sadness as I have really enjoyed my time here.
This is a wonderful school which so many positive
aspects to it, not the least of the high quality of staff and
the excellent teaching and learning that takes place in all
of the classrooms. There is also a very strong community
spirit in our school. I will leave with many great
memories. The appointment of a new Principal will begin
very soon. The announcement to the school community
will be made as soon as it becomes available.
Earlier this week a letter was sent home to all families
inviting them to participate in the School Climate survey.
It is extremely important that all families participate in this
in order for us to have valid data. The survey will give us
an indication of our families’ perception of what happens
at our school. The data collected will assist us to
organise programmes and activities in order to meet the
needs of our students and their families. The web
address to access the survey is;
www.NSIPartnerships.com.au and the code is MG2019P.
When we carried out this survey last year we only had 10
families out of 140 participate. We are looking forward to
a much higher participation rate this year.
Last weekend many of our Year 6 students received the
Sacrament of Confirmation. It was great to see them
standing so proudly to make their own baptismal
promises and then, one by one, receive the Oil of Chrism,
the outward and physical sign of the sacrament. I would
like to thank Miss Zurzolo for all the work she carried out
in instructing the students and to Mrs Keddie for her work
in organising the Mass.
On Wednesday 25th September the Parish will be holding
a parent/child workshop in preparation of those children in
Year 3 who will be receiving the Sacrament of
Reconciliation for the first time. The workshops will be
held here at our school. A note has been sent home to
Year 3 families about this and I encourage you to return it
as soon as possible so final preparations can be made.
Please keep these children in your prayers as they move
through this preparation period, culminating in them
receiving the Sacrament on Tuesday 22nd October. If
any parents have any questions on this, please see either
Ms Martinz or Mrs Keddie.
This week we received word that we have been
recognised for our outstanding performances in the
Catholic Schools Performing Arts Festival by taking out
the overall awards for the Easter Play and for ‘My Fair
Lady’. This is an outstanding achievement and
something our school can be very proud of. Thank you to
Mrs Aldred for her work in preparing the students for
these performances and to the staff for their support.
Mrs Brescacin will be taking some long service leave for
the next four weeks. We wish her an enjoyable and
relaxing time while she is away on leave and look forward
to her return. Miss Lina Zurzolo will be working with the
Year 4 class while Mrs Brescacin is away.
The Year 5 class held their assembly this morning. It was
great to see them sharing their learning with the school
community in such a positive way. Congratulations to
each of the merit award winners who were recognised by
their teachers for completing excellent work over the last
few weeks. This is our last assembly for this term. Our

CONGRATULATIONS AND WELCOME
Yesterday we welcomed Joshua (Yr 3) and Bethany (Yr
5), into the Catholic Community of St Francis of Assisi,
Maida Vale. The two classes celebrated Mass with Fr
Joseph, along with Joshua and Bethany’s family, and
many of our class parents. It was a lovely Mass of
belonging, and we ask God to abundantly bless Joshua
and Bethany, as they continue their journey in faith.

PRE-PRIMARY NEWS
The children have been working very hard in their group
rotations for both numeracy and literacy. In literacy, we
have been writing recounts of our weekend adventures in
our formal writing books. These books will be on display
next week, every morning before school, for parents and
carers to view. In our numeracy lessons, we have been
practising our addition skills and using different apparatus
and maths equipment to count in groups of ten and
practice ‘teen numbers’. The children have also been
busy with their box constructions creating bridges for the
Three Billy Goats! These constructions will also be on
display next week. In Week 10, we will be joining the Year
2 class for an excursion to the Kalamunda History Village.
A letter will be sent home tomorrow with more
information. Have a great week!

YEAR 4 NEWS
One word for last week and that is simply AMAZING! The
Year 4, 5, 6 children performed ‘My Fair Lady’. It was
such a privilege to see our children perform so beautifully
and truly work together under the direction of Mrs Aldred
to produce such a spectacular show. We were also
blessed to see the Year 2 / 3 classes perform Three Bill
Goats Gruff and again, it was fantastic to see all children
participate with great enthusiasm.
I was also lucky enough to be able to witness the Year 5
class perform ‘Noahs Ark’ on Wednesday. Well done to
all children involved you all shone like stars on the stage.
I would like to personally welcome Miss Lina Zurzolo to
my class next week, where she will take very good care
of them over the next couple of weeks.
To my beautiful class of Year 4’s, thank you for all your
hard work this term. I am looking forward to seeing you
all again early in term 4.

YEAR 6 NEWS
Congratulations to all the Year 6 students who
participated in the sacrament of Confirmation last
weekend. All the rehearsals, learning and assignments
paid off; you performed beautifully! Well done! Thank you
to all the supporters that helped throughout this process.
Some students are doing a great job with their homework
in Term 3, but others are forgetting to do at least 20
minutes of reading every day. Along with this reading,
they should be completing one Lexile quiz a week at
home or at school. If they are not able to read and
complete a quiz, a comprehension task will be sent home
to ensure they are still working on their comprehension
skills.

Have Sum Fun” Maths Competition Term 3
Again this term, Matthew Gibney did themselves proud in
the “Have Sum Fun” Maths Competition. This term, our
new Year 4 Team (Romeo, Amelia Hu., Lloyd and Ben),
really rose to the challenge of problem solving using their
mathematical skills and knowledge. The results for this
term were:
Year 4: 14th out of 63 teams
Year 5: 11th out of 59 teams
Year 6: 32nd
out of 83 teams
We are really looking forward now to 2020. Great work
Matthew Gibney mathematicians!

The productions would not be possible if it wasn’t for the wonderful team of volunteers who worked tirelessly for many
hours in making these fantastic costumes. Thank you to Mrs Alison Oaks for her dedication in making the girls outfits
look spectacular. To Rae Roberts, Marilyn Scott, Vicki Zorino & Jodie Capobianco in making the magnificent hats for
the girls. Mrs Anya Moore for making the costumes for the Three Billy Goats Gruff and our Bird costumes. Once again,
thanks to Rae Roberts for working with me to make the tree costumes, and Jane Arnold for the floral arrangements for
My Fair Lady and Three Billy Goats Gruff. To the parents who assisted on the morning of the performance in styling the
girls hair, a sincere thank you for all your help.
Thank you parents for allowing your children to be part of this experience.
I wish you all a happy and safe holiday coming up.
