NEWSLETTER No. 34 2nd November 2017

Dear Parents, Friends and Students

Matthew Gibney Day was a huge success and wonderful

day. It started with a Mass with many parents and

parishioners joining us at school as we celebrated the

birthday of our patron. Following the Mass, the students

participated in a tabloid sports session that was organised

by Miss Andersen and Miss Hibben. The day was

completed with the Grandparents’ Afternoon tea. I would

like to make special mention of our Year 6 students who

each of the activities during the tabloid sport session and

then served tea, coffee and food at the afternoon tea.

They also squeezed in a couple of items for our

entertainment! I would also like to thank the hard work of

our P&F who prepared the day. They made sandwiches,

organised cakes and coordinated the afternoon tea. To

Michelle Steward and her many helpers – the day would

not have the success it was without your great work.

We have had a busy week this week. On Monday the

Year 6 students held their ‘Food Stalls’ which was the

culmination of their ‘Masterchef’ unit of work. The

students are to be congratulated on their organisation and

enthusiasm. The undercover area was alive with food

challenged to bring Jesus to the world, but more

importantly, make Jesus real just as the saints have done.

I would like to thank Mrs Keddie for coordinating the Mass

and Mrs Aldred for her work in organising the music.

YEAR 4 NEWS Today the children participated in a Cyber Safety

presentation. It was very enlightening and the children

enjoyed learning about being cyber safe.

Yesterday the children were lucky enough to be

entertained by the B’tutta Percussion band as part of the

Musica Viva schools programme.

I must congratulate my class for their wonderful

performances at Grandparents’ afternoon tea last Friday.

Your poem recital was brilliant as was your rendition of

the Italian National Anthem.

Yesterday, at the Parish, where we celebrated ‘All Saints

Mass’. The children behaved and sang beautifully. The

Year 4 class will be taking part in their final class Mass of

the year on Wednesday of Week 6. All parents and

grandparents are welcome. It would also be wonderful if

the children from Carson and Russell could supply a

small plate to share for morning tea after Mass.

Thank you to all children who have bought in a 1.25 litre

plastic bottle. If you haven’t, could you please do so and if

you happen to have extras at home could you also bring

them in.

Could all children please ensure that they haven’t picked

up Frankie Burman’s sports jacket by mistake as it is still

missing?

Thank you to the parents who have so far come in to talk

to the children about their occupations. The children have

thoroughly enjoyed it.

PRE-PRIMARY NEWS The Pre Primary children have been taking part in various

events which have taken place at our school over the past

two weeks. Last Friday we celebrated Matthew Gibney

Day in various ways. After attending Mass, we all

received a delicious birthday cup cake and then took part

in the ‘whole school’ tabloid sports events. After lunch we

performed our song and watched the rest of the concert.

The Pre Primary children were, once again, ’super stars’

on stage and thoroughly enjoyed all the celebrations that

day. Yesterday we attended Mass at the church to

celebrate ‘All Saints Day’ and Mr Powell told us a very

interesting story of St Francis’, after whom our Parish

church is named. In the afternoon we joined the other

classes in the undercover area to listen to an incursion by

‘Viva Musica’. Thank you to all the many people in our

school who have been organising all these wonderful

events for us. Meanwhile, the Pre Primary children are

practising for their ‘Edudance Concert’ which takes place

in Week 8. These lessons take place every Tuesday and

they are progressing very well. We have also been

working very hard in the classroom with our reading,

sentence writing and learning how to write and solve

‘number stories’. Keep up the great work, Pre Primary!

Matthew Gibney Day 2017 Last Friday we celebrated a wonderful Matthew Gibney Day. We began with a very special whole school Mass in the undercover area, celebrated by Fr Francis. The children enjoyed a Matthew Gibney Day cupcake in their classrooms while the parishioners and other community members enjoyed a piece of the Matthew Gibney Cake. After recess the children had the chance to enjoy themselves through tabloid sports that were run by Year 6. Our Grandparent's afternoon tea was a lovely way to showcase our talents to the community. Each class put on a very entertaining performance. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who made this day so special. In particular I would like to thank the staff of our school and the wonderful P&F volunteers that worked so hard in the canteen all day. It was also wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents present on the day.

St Vinnies Christmas Appeal A big thank you to all the families who have donated to the Christmas hampers. If you have not already donated, please consider those who will be doing it tough this Christmas and donate non-perishable food items for our St Vinnies Christmas appeal.

YEAR 6 NEWS Wow! What a start to Term 4 the Year Sixes have had! A

busy couple of weeks for their final term at Matthew

Gibney Catholic Primary School. The students had their

class Mass back in Week 2. They all read and sung

beautifully! From Week 2, we entered Week 3 where we

were busying preparing for Matthew Gibney Day.

Matthew Gibney Day was a very busy day for every

single student with running the tabloid sports for the rest

of the school and the amount of positive feedback I got

back from the staff about the Year Six leadership skills

was amazing to hear. Each and every one of the students

should be very proud of themselves. Once tabloid sports

were finished, it was time to either get into our costumes

or find out what job we had in serving afternoon tea. It

was great to hear the manners coming out of the Year

Sixes as they asked the grandparents and parents what

they would like. It was amazing to see the Year Six

students become even more confident as they kept

serving, especially the tea and coffee…. Patrick you got

faster as time went on. A big ‘well-done’ to the Year Six

students presenting their poems to the audience and then

the group of Year Sixes who performed their play.

From Matthew Gibney Day to Monday, Week 4, the

students put on food stalls for the rest of the school. They

have been waiting for this day since the beginning of their

MasterChef integrated unit of work. They showed great

salesmanship skills as they tried to sell all their food. I

WANT TO GIVE THE YEAR SIXES AND THE

MATTHEW GIBNEY CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL

COMMUNITY A MASSIVE THANK YOU FOR

PREPARING THE FOOD AND FOR BUYING THE

FOOD ON MONDAY.

In total we raised = $403.15!

YEAR 2 NEWS

This week has been very interesting as we followed a

procedure to make butter from cream. There were a lot of

tired arms after shaking containers of cream for 10-15

minutes. Luckily the children were working with a partner!

We then tasted the yummy butter on a biscuit and talked

about what might be a better way to make butter.

Last week we started a mathematical investigation where

we made grass heads. The children are closely

monitoring the progress and are very keen to take care of

their grass head.

Thank you to those who have sent a 1.25 litre plastic

bottle into class. Please let me know if you require a

plastic bottle as I have some spare bottles.

After our fabulous performance during Matthew Gibney

day we are feeling very enthusiastic about our upcoming

assembly on Friday 17th November.

SCHOOL BANKING “After nearly 4 and a half years we are looking for a new

School Banking Coordinator to take over the role for 2018 and keep the program running. It is very easy to do and the kids love banking their hard earned coins each week! Full training is provided by CBA and Amanda & Michelle are still on hand to help out as we wrap up the year. Please think about it. It doesn't take up much time and I'm sure the children would miss their

weekly school banking if it wasn't to return next year.

Thanks! “ Amanda Gordon
