THE WAY Today we sense the apostles' trepidation as they begin to realize that the Lord would soon be leaving them. In their fear, they ask, "Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" (John 14:5).

Jesus tells them that he is the way. The Easter season has been a time of growing in Easter faith so that we, too, may learn to know that Jesus is

the way. We can take comfort in the Lord's promise that he is going to his Father's house to prepare a place for us, his chosen people who have been called out of darkness into God's wonderful light. As the paschal

candle continues to burn during this holy season, let us remember that in baptism we were given the light of Christ. With Christ our light as the beacon lighting our way, let us march toward the glory of Pentecost.

Fifth Sunday of Easter ~ Mother’s Day May 14, 2017

“When God Created Mothers” by the late columnist Erma Bombeck

When the Good Lord was creating mothers He was into His sixth day of “overtime” when the angel appeared and said, “You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.”

And God said, “Have you read the specs on this order? She has to be completely washable, but not plastic. Have 180 moveable parts…..all replaceable. Run on black coffee and leftovers. Have a lap that disappears when she stands up. A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair. And six pairs of hands.”

The angel shook her head slowly and said, “Six pairs of hands!........No way.”

“It’s not the hands that are causing me problems,” God remarked, “it’s the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have.”

“That’s on the standard model?” the angel asked. God nodded, and said, “One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks, ‘What are you kids doing in there,’ when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn’t but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say, ‘I understand and I love you’ without so much as uttering a word.”

“God,” said the angel, “Get some rest tomorrow…..” “I can’t,” said the Lord, “I’m so close to creating something so close to myself. Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick, can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger, and can get a nine year old to stand under a shower.”

The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. “It’s too soft,” she sighed. “But tough,” said God excitedly. “You can’t imagine what this mother can do or endure.”

“Can it think?”

“Not only can it think, but it can reason and compromise,” said the Creator.

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek. “There’s a leak,” she pronounced. “I told You that You were trying to put too much into this model.”

“It’s not a leak,” said the Lord. “It’s a tear.”

“What’s it for?”

“It’s for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness, and pride.”

“You are a genius,” said the angel.

Somberly, God said, “I didn’t put it there.” May God bless all our mothers today. May perpetual light shine on the moms who have been called from this world to that place Christ prepared especially for them. May blessings of strength and love and steadfastness be shared with the mothers who still reside upon the Earth. May they enjoy this Mother’s Day.

Erma Bombeck’s story makes mention of moms being created according to specs, i.e. specifications. I hear a lot about specs these days at our construction meetings. I know they are important because failure to adhere to the specs now leads to a collapse in the future. So, if moms have specs and buildings have specs, do we?

I certainly think so. God has made each of us for a purpose and has called us by name to fulfill it. He has, through Christ’s promised gift of the Holy Spirit, endowed us with the energy and the inspiration to serve Him in this world and be with Him in the next. He has formed us from the dust to be exactly what He wants us to be, according to specs. He has built us so that we will not falter or collapse.

For many of us, our mothers provided an example of how to live the way God wants us to live. For all of us, God provided a perfect example in our Blessed Mother, Mary. We seek her prayers today, for our mothers and ourselves. May those prayers help us to appreciate the blessings we have received and follow the way of her Son, Jesus.

Happy Mother’s Day. May God bless all of you. Father Hambrough

Invitation from Archbishop Carlson:

“On Sunday, May 28, the archdiocese of St. Louis will welcome pilgrims from across North America for the Pilgrimage of Trust to be held at the St. Louis University campus. In response to the many obvious divisions exis ng within our St. Louis community—whether they be our racial, socio-economic, cultural, or religious differences—this weekend-long Pilgrimage will be an opportunity for sincere dialogue, deep reflec on, and by the grace of God, true reconcilia on. In the Gospel of John, Jesus prays to our heavenly Father, asking Him to protect and sanc fy the disciples so that “they may all be one.” We hope that this pilgrimage may be a me of unity—it will be an ecumenical event with par cipants from Catholic, Protestant, and non-Chris an churches in the city and county, and it will be led by the Taize brothers from France who have a charism of music and ecumenical dialogue.

Here’s what you can do today: first, pray for the success of this pilgrimage. Second, prayerfully consider registering as a pilgrim for this historic Memorial Day weekend—there will be workshops, music, and me for Common Prayer in the Taize style. Although most out-of-town pilgrims will be young adults in their 20’s and 30’s, ALL ages are welcome to a end. Third, on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, the en re archdiocese is invited to join in the Walk of Trust, which will begin at the Cathedral Basilica and end inside St. Louis University’s Chaifetz Arena for a short celebra on. At 2 pm that day, every Catholic parish in the archdiocese will ring its bells, and the walk will begin down Lindell Avenue.

Thank you for your me. As we journey together in this celebra on of Easter, know that you are in my prayers.”

For more information or to register, please visit pilgrimageoftruststl.com.

Registration will close on Wednesday, May 17.
