May 2010 4 Geist Community Newsletter

Hello Geist Neighbors, Friends and Lake Lovers:

Your help is need again this year to support the 2010 Blast on the Bridge at Geist – 4th of July Celebration event. We want to sincerely thank you for your past support and participation since this is an event supported solely by businesses, residents and lake users. In these tough economic times we would like to keep this wonderful celebration and community event alive.

The Geist Lake Coalition (GLC) was established in 2000 and is a nonprofit coalition of neighborhoods surrounding the Geist Reservoir that is managed and operated by volunteers who are passionate about the health, safety, and enjoyment of Geist Lake and the community. The GLC attempts to effect positive change and community action.

All funding for GLC initiatives comes from fundraising and sponsorship efforts. Our successes would not be achievable without the generous contributions from our community. The Blast on the Bridge at Geist - 4th of July Celebration is the GLC’s signature event. For the past 10 years each July 4th celebration has been bigger and better and 2009 was quite an event. In spite of the record breaking cold and constant rain, the evening was well attended and enjoyed by all. We are making plans for the 2010 event to be even better and let’s hope warmer and drier. Without your support we risk this being a family holiday tradition of the past!

We need your help in other ways too. One of the Coalition’s initiatives was to launch the Geist Watershed Alliance (GWA) to help address Geist Lake water quality related issues. The critical and current topic being addressed by the GWA is the infamous blue-green algae and invasive aquatic plants that have affected Geist Lake the last few years. Identifying and addressing the causes and resolutions to blue-green algae and other emerging issues, like the recent zebra mussels identification are complex problems that will take years to resolve, but we have to start.

The GWA is nearing completion of our first Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) Project. We are committed to compete for additional state and federal grants. Future projects are aimed at planning and feasibility initia-tives, followed by biological and engineering implementation projects. You can direct your donations to be used strictly for GWA initiatives if you wish. For more information please visit: www.geistwatershed.com. We would also like to recruit additional volunteers and further raise community awareness about these efforts.

At the risk of repetition, both the Geist Lake Coalition www.GeistLake.org and Geist Watershed Alliance www.GeistWatershed.com are nonprofit, volunteer organizations that are focused on keeping Geist Lake a safe, healthy, and enjoyable asset for all of us to enjoy. Contact any of us with questions or suggestions and please do your best to support these community organizations and events.

Thank you for your support!

lawrence Chamber of Commerce updates

Sandi Ballard, Executive Director of the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce

director of the Central Indiana Region of Business Network International (BNI), and The Whale Hunters, Certified Part-ner. Hazel not only teaches you a great deal, she empowers you to want more.

We are also hoping to help the city of Lawrence educate the business owners/managers about permits. From what I understand, there is an overwhelming number of fines being handed out for improper or lack of permits.

Kyle Gotschammer, building inspector for the City of Law-rence, contacted us and wants us to help spread the word, so he can educate people versus fining them. So those of you within the Lawrence City limits who are looking to build, renovate or expand, let us know and we’ll put together an hour-long informational seminar to help save you time and money. We look forward to continued service to our com-munity. Please let us know how we can help!

Last month we held an over-whelming number of events, including one seminar called “Whale Hunting 101.”

The subject related to “How to land bigger deals with bigger customers.” We had a great turnout, so much so that James, the manager at Northwood University, and I had to break a sweat rearranging the room to fit everyone in! Thank you, James!

But that’s the type of re-sponse we hoped for, and honestly, it’s part of our goal this year with our education-al boost. We want to host seminars for our members and “hopeful” members to learn and grow. Addition-ally, we enjoy working with Hazel Walker, executive

Ed Sahm, the successful owner of all six (and count-ing) Sahm’s Restaurant loca-tions, has shared a genuine passion for great food since his childhood. It wasn’t really until high school, after carefully observing his grandmother, that Ed started experimenting with different recipes and dishes.

He has worked in a restau-rant since the age of sixteen, and acquired the knack to cook for his family of eight brothers and sisters in his spare time.

Ed attended Purdue University and eventually majored in what is known today as Hotel and Restaurant Management. He went on to become a restaurant owner just one year out of college. Since its opening in 1986, Sahm’s Restaurant has been consistently delicious and never outdated. Its décor is modern and chic with a very welcoming atmosphere to compliment the homemade cooking that many regulars have come to enjoy over the years.

Although their location has moved across the street from the corner of 116th and Allisonville, the restaurant still remains conveniently located for food lovers. The smoke-free envi-ronment is more inviting and healthier all around. Sahm’s seems to have it all: excellent timing, excellent service, and to top it off, great food.

Sahm’s delivers American cuisine like very few restaurants do. It is a local favorite for many reasons, some obvious, while others are more subtle and get better with time. Be-sides the same stained glass window panes, the environment has become more engaging with a separate, yet not com-pletely closed off, dining room and bar. Sahm’s creates every dish from scratch, from the bread to their soups. Besides the main courses, don’t forget the side dishes, which are so good!

Taste is certainly the focal point of every dish. Must haves include strip steaks, soups of the day, pastas of the day, anything stir fry, and of course, last, but certainly the most important, the sour cream coffee cake. Although the steaks may not completely melt in your mouth, the taste for the price you pay is unbeatable. The seating area has slightly shrank from 195 seats to 155, but Friday lunch hour is just as packed as a typical Saturday night. That’s a very good sign in terms of the quality, and of course, the longevity of such a restaurant.

Sahm’s Restaurant offers a broad menu, served with a per-sonal and caring touch. When it’s time to really eat, you can’t beat Sahm’s because there is no better place in the greater Indianapolis area that offers great food at such great value.

same time, that same woman will not, to save her life, part with a hand-carved statue of the love goddess of Antarctica just because her great-uncle made it during his “recovery days.”

As for additional challenges, let’s not overlook the garage sale fanatics that stalk the neighborhood during the pre-dawn hours in order to capitalize on bargains. The act of actually opening your garage door in the morning is similar to conducting war games in training camp. “How do we get our goods set up and out on the driveway without being as-saulted by the enemy?”

One of the hardest obstacles is to deal with those who will whittle your prices down, negotiating even the smallest of sales. “Will you take seven cents for this marble collection? You have it marked for a dime.”

“Are you kidding me? Just pay the (expletive here) dime and move on with your life, mister! You and your beat up pick-up truck full of lawn furniture and eight-track tapes. What do you do with this junk anyway?”

Deep breath, deep breath, smile and say “Have a nice day!” And this is happening while a random customer plows through your neatly folded stack of 2Ts, says she’s looking for size 10s, and then walks away from the rubble.

Again, garage sales test your sheer will to be nice to people. They test your ability to compromise with your family members in the middle of temper tantrums and emotional outbursts. They also help identify any possible hang-ups you have that might require therapy.

So then why have a garage sale in the first place? Obviously, it’s to fulfill that far-fetched dream that you’ll sell every single trinket and every pair of faded blue jeans, and walk away with thousands of dollars. Which, of course, never happens, and is why I’ve sworn off garage sales for the time being. Until I can put that beer can collection up for sale.

May 2010 10 Geist Community Newsletter

If you’ve ever wanted to test your marriage, your sanity and your self-control, there’s one thing you must do: hold a garage sale. For it will be within the preparation period and the sale itself that you will find out your true convictions, your negotia-tion skills, and your ability to interact with strangers.

Some of the areas that you’ll first have to come to grips with are the differences that you and your family mem-

bers have when it comes to value: value for random items that have been sitting in your attic for decades, and value for sentimental trinkets that only serve to collect dust. Here is a typical conversation:

Husband: Wow, look! My beer can collection from the ’70s!

Wife: How much do you think we’ll get for that?

Husband (with stunned look of shock and disbelief): We’re not selling any of these cans! They could be worth a fortune!

Wife: Isn’t that kind of the point of selling them?

Husband: Well, what about this tote full of baby clothes? Do we really need every stained onesie and hand-knitted sweater from our children’s early years?

Wife (with spine-chilling look of horror and disgust): Take your hands off the tote. Back away or die!

And thus, the war begins. You have to leave any sort of logic out the door, because in the world of garage sales, nothing makes sense. It’s hard to explain why a woman will sell her entire living room décor after only two years of use, “because I’m tired of it… it’s just not me anymore.” At the

Covered in glittering gems of blue, green, and almost every other color in the rainbow, Jill Willey’s dining room is as close to a candy store for grown women as you are ever likely to find. Necklaces of every shape and length decorate the table, as shiny beaded earrings glisten from the corner of the room. As two women begin to “ooh” and “aah” over her designs, Willey calmly smiles, clearly enjoying the pleasure her jewelry brings to those who wear it.

That calm smile is the result of following a passion as it led Willey in a new direction. After spending 30 years in interior design and architecture, Willey experienced a change in creative focus in 2002. Following a chance encounter with a jewelry designer in a little shop in Arizona, Willey came home to Indiana with a necklace she made herself, and a new career. “I have always loved rocks and shells, and have been drawn to the sea. It just felt natural to put these stones together in a necklace,“ says Willey, sitting in her comfort-ably decorated living room. “Whenever I wore the necklace, I always received so many compliments, and other ladies started suggesting that I make them and have a trunk show to sell them.” Combining her love of natural elements and her experience as a designer, Willey began to craft necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, and JILLDUZAN Jewelry was born.

Willey has allowed her business to take a note from the

organic elements that comprise her jewelry by letting the business evolve at its own pace without forcing rapid growth. “I am driven from an intuitive spirit. From a busi-ness perspective, I just do what feels right,“ says Willey. “I feel like what I do is more about the relationships I build than the jewelry I sell. The jewelry has been a conduit. I’d much rather stay small and take care of these relationships that I have made with people than turn it into a business just for the sake of business.”

Beginning with a few trunk shows a year, Willey has slowly added retail sales to the mix, and is in the early stages of partnering with a fine jeweler to design a line of rings. In January, Willey brought her daughter Brie, who has a back-ground in fashion design, into the business. “It was a big step to bring Brie in full time, but she brings a great perspective. If we like something, we know that it will appeal to women of all age groups.”

The jewelry itself is an eclectic mix of metals and stones. Willey uses chains that are made in the American West by Navaho craftsmen, as well as chains made by metalsmiths in India. Willey says, “I feel like my pieces are an organic mix of geometry and design. I don’t want the jewelry to over-shadow the wearer. I want it to bring out the natural beauty

of a woman. I want people to notice the woman, not the necklace.” Each piece is unique in its own way, and one of Willey’s favorite pastimes is to watch clients combine pieces in ways she never intended during the design process. “There are no rules with my jewelry. Women put two or three pieces together that somehow just work, and just let it happen.” The JILLDUZAN line has price points ranging from the very affordable $60 for a simple necklace, up into the thousands for more complicated pieces. Willey says her designs are difficult to categorize, as they aren’t fine jewelry, but they are not costume either. “I think we offer something different for women, and I find that exciting.”

As the two clients circle Willey’s table while fawning over the jewels on display, Willey’s pride continues to be evident on her face. It is very clear how much she enjoys her craft, and the people it brings into her life. “It’s about the synergy of relationships. I think it is better to be rich in relationships than financially.” And the bonus of having a jewelry store in your dining room, well, that’s not bad either.

More information about where you can find JILLDUZAN and upcoming events may be found at www.jillduzan.com.

Several Geist area doctors are working to help keep kids healthy this summer. Kids may be out of the classroom and into the great outdoors, but they are still exposed to germs every day. The H1N1 scare is down right now, but doctors know it will most likely resurface late this summer. Along with that, there are new immunization requirements to take care of before the start of the next school year. So what can you do to keep you and your family healthy and better pre-pared for the 2010-11 school year?

I asked a couple of doctors at the Geist Family Practice and Pediatrics for some tips on keeping kids healthy while out of school, and about the new immunization requirements.

Pediatrician Dr. Alex Sleder, who joined the Geist practice last November, says washing your hands makes a huge difference when it comes to kids spreading germs. “Even though the kids are out of school, they are still exposed to germs and need to take extra precautions to play it safe,” says Sleder.

Dr. Shannon Tighe says the changes in immunization re-quirements start with the chicken pox vaccine. All preschool

and kindergarten students will be required to have two doses of varicella (chicken pox) vaccine, or a doctor’s note saying they had chicken pox. But 6th-12th graders must also have two doses of the chicken pox vaccine, or a parent note veri-fying they had chicken pox.

“This is a big change for them,” says Dr. Tighe. “We used to think only one dose was needed, so if they’re in the older age group they may think they are fine and up to date.”

The 6th-12th grade group also has to have one dose of diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccine (DTaP) to prevent whooping cough, and one dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCVA), which helps prevent meningo-coccal disease, a serious bacterial illness. The doctors also say they strongly encourage parents to make their back to school appointments early this summer, as the kids might need a last minute physical for sports.

The late summer rush for vaccines puts a strain on the doc-tors’ scheduling system, and you don’t want to be at risk of getting in too late to tap into the office supply of their alloted vaccines. “The new changes won’t allow the school system to admit a student without the proper immunizations required,” says Dr. Tighe.

While growing up in tiny Mitchell, Indiana, Kim Stephen-son says she never imagined she’d spend much of her adult life at a training gym. But that’s exactly where she and her husband Greg find themselves nearly every evening – and with good reason. Sons Chris and Anton are accomplished gymnasts, both state champions who train at DeVeaux’s School of Gymnastics in Fishers.

“My boys eat, breathe and sleep gymnastics,” said Kim. “Chris practices 21 hours a week, Anton 18 hours, 52 weeks a year. Their motto is ‘practice makes perfect, but perfect practice really makes perfect.’ They eat healthy diets and don’t drink soda – that’s just the way they’re designed. They are so disciplined.”

Such dedication by this Fishers family has paid big divi-dends. In March, each boy won his competition level at the Indiana State Men’s Gymnastics Competition in Evansville. Chris, 15, a freshman at Hamilton Southeastern High School, took top honors in Level 10, competing on the six tradi-tional gymnastics apparatus: pommel horse, high bar, floor exercise, parallel bars, vault and still rings. Anton, 13, a 7th grader at Hamilton Southeastern Junior High, also won the all-around championship in Level 9 on the same apparatus.

“I’m not aware of brothers both winning in the same year.

They are state champions – nobody beat them! And for both to come home with a title is very significant,” marveled Mom.

Following the regional competition (Chris finished 15th all-around, Anton 10th), the two qualified for the Men’s Junior Olympics Nationals, May 4-9 in Knoxville, Tennessee, where future Olympians will likely be competing. Governed by Indianapolis-based USA Gymnastics, such competi-tions are feeders into the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics training program.

“It’s like the Super Bowl of men’s gymnastics,” explained Kim. “Nine regions each send about 50 boys to the JO Na-tionals. Chris and Anton will be competing against the best of the best.”

Such success doesn’t come easily – or cheaply. Kim and Greg insist that the boys complete all homework before at-tending evening training sessions, for which the couple pays $600 a month and requires two trips daily except Sunday. Many hundreds of additional dollars are spent for uniforms, fees and the like.

“You have no idea of the time commitment. We’re lucky to live only 15 minutes from DeVeaux’s,” said Kim. “The boys have competed in Orlando, Las Vegas, Chicago, Colorado Springs and elsewhere. With airfare and lodging we spend boatloads of money on gymnastics. Why? Because the boys are physically and mentally healthy, we love the coaches and gym, and we value healthy competition.”

The discipline required of competitive gymnastics is espe-cially helpful to Chris, who as a young child had obsessive compulsive tendencies.

“For Chris, it keeps him focused. Gymnastics was a dream come true and it is still working,” said Kim.

While a spot on a U.S. Olympic team is a distant dream, the family’s immediate goal is scholarships for the boys in top collegiate programs. After nationals the duo heads back to the gym to work on new skills – a routine they’ve kept since age four. Kim, a Lawrence Township teacher, concedes that all the practice time leaves her missing Chris and Anton.

“I’m sometimes sad not seeing them at home, but I’m good with that. They’re the coolest kids ever.”

One Geist area insurance agent is showing off her guns! Little guns, as Haleh Krauter would say, but guns that she has worked hard for and showed off in a fun photo on Venice Beach where she recently vacationed with her son.

You may know Haleh Krauter from her picture on the side of her State Farm van, the grocery carts in Marsh, or maybe from her inspirational messages she posts almost daily on Facebook.

But the real Haleh (pronounced Holly) in person is a fit, vibrant lady who appears to enjoy exercise … even though

she says it wasn’t always that way!

“I used to work out just until I broke a sweat, then I’d quit!” says Haleh. Then she had some kind of an awakening when she turned 40 two years ago. As a mother, a wife, a friend and a business owner, she knew she needed more energy for those roles in her life.

Haleh’s mission since the early 90’s has been to help people manage their risks through insurance policies. She decided to buy herself an insurance policy … a membership to the gym!

“The premiums are the (almost) daily trips to the gym,” says Haleh. “The payoff is more energy and feeling fit.”

Her commitment to exercise is working, and she is now back to the size she was when she got married in 1986. She stays trim by working out with a trainer at Geist Fitness about three times a week. She also enjoys cycling classes, even the ones her husband, Erick Krauter, teaches now and then at the gym!

Haleh is just as driven about work, too. “I always knew I wanted to be a State Farm agent,” she recalls. She opened her first office, which was about 300 sq. ft., in Fortville. Today, she has three full-time and one part-time employee at her Geist office on Fall Creek Road where she has been for the past ten years.

Haleh says her job is protecting people from the devastation of life, and she seems to adopt that attitude for other aspects of her life as well. “Getting into the best shape possible is my insurance policy,” says Haleh. “It makes for a happier way of life!”

Three emerging artists unveiled their winning proposals and models for public art that will stand as a lasting contribution to the growth of the City of Lawrence. It signifies a sus-tained local interest and support for the arts, while enhanc-ing the Lawrence Redevelopment Commission’s current and future commitment to improving the streetscape of Pendle-ton Pike, and the Fort Harrison Reuse Authority’s continued progress on the new Village at the Fort.

The May 11, 2010 Toast the Arts! event was one of a bi-monthly series sponsored by Partnership for Lawrence, Inc., a local nonprofit arts organization whose mission is to bring awareness to and promote the arts in the greater Lawrence community.

This event featured the work of the three Herron School of Art and Design students that have been commissioned to design, build and install three different pieces of public art to be permanently and prominently installed in the City of Lawrence. This is a result of the partnerships between both the Lawrence Redevelopment Commission and the Fort Harrison Reuse Authority with Herron School of Art and Design. The process was set up as an educational project for students to compete for the commission. All three pieces are expected to be installed in the fall of 2010.

“This public art is a very exciting form of progress for our city,” said Dave Freeman, President of the Lawrence City Council.

Ava Larkin, a Herron graduate student, has earned the commission from the City of Lawrence Redevelopment Commission.

In an effort to connect with the community, Ava has cre-ated a true collaboration with the city’s residents by setting up a community poll. The residents of Lawrence can look through a list of powerful action words that have the poten-tial to represent the visions of the city, and select up to eight for consideration for the sculpture. The sculpture will be a grouping of four of these words constructed of 6-foot alu-minum letters nested together in groups of two. The letters, which seem randomly placed on the islands in the intersec-tion of 56th Street and Pendleton Pike, will allow traffic in both directions a momentary glimpse of the selected words, allowing the residents to share a message of vision with each other and their visitors. To participate in the poll, go to www.avalarkin.com or www.cityoflawrence.org.

After participating in the poll during the event, Lawrence resident Judge Frank Sullivan commented, “I’ve taken the information on how to participate in the poll online to share with my wife, Cheryl. I’m excited to find out if we pick the same words.”

Jared Cru Smith and Cydney Campbell, Herron under-graduate students, earned their commissions from the Fort Harrison Reuse Author-ity after both vying for the same project to be installed at the new entrance to the Village at the Fort off Post Road.

“These students exceeded my expectations!” said Kris Butler, Executive Director of the Fort Harrison Reuse Authority.

After the jury panel made the difficult decision to select Jared Cru Smith’s trio of elegant and organically shaped concrete and resin designs for the location, Ms. Butler went back to her Board of Directors to fund another selection, Cydney Campbell’s abstracted and reflective doors, that will be installed at the new walking trail around the pond at the new Village at the Fort.

The event was co-hosted by PFL and Midwest Model Makers, a premier architec-tural model making com-pany located at 5742 North Post Road. The beautifully renovated structure that now houses the firm is part of the historic Fort Benjamin

Harrison campus and was once known as the Pump House. It is tucked back in an inconspicuous and scenic wooded area just west of North Post Road, north of the historic Otis Avenue Theatre and the former Service Club now known as the Sterrett Center and under the old Fort water tower. The beauty of the property, background guitarist Brittni Knox, and the detailed model work inside provided an inspiring backdrop for the artists’ work.

Established in 2009, the Toast the Arts! series provides an affordable vehicle to showcase artists and musicians, as well as places of interest in Lawrence Township. Chef Suzanne and Elite Beverages, as well as a growing membership in PFL, Inc. generously support it.

“I feel passionate about the mission of Partnership for Law-rence and hope to help Lawrence become a cultural destina-tion where people will come from outside our community to see what’s happening here,” commented Board President Judy Byron.

The free series, as well as Artique! (an annual art fair held in November), are events designed to promote the arts in our Lawrence Township community in a manner consistent with PFL’s commitment to bipartisan partnerships that support the arts through easy access, multigenerational participation

Welcome wax. Having wax in the ears isn’t dirty — it’s • healthy. Earwax fights infection and collects dirt in the ear canal. Ears should be cleaned with just a washcloth or tissue, and nothing smaller than your elbow (includ-ing cotton swabs) should ever be inserted into the ear.

Turn It Down

Loud noises can also be harmful to children’s ears. Whether your child is playing with noisy toys, listening to music, or watching television, loud noise can cause temporary or permanent hearing loss. If it sounds too loud, ask your child to turn it down.

The Better to Hear You with

May 2010 24 Geist Community Newsletter

For more than 75 years, the month of May has been des-ignated as Better Hearing and Speech Month to promote education of speech and hearing issues. Teaching your child how to maintain clean, healthy ears is a crucial part of any personal hygiene lesson. Despite the significance of the ears to your child’s daily function, it is easy to forget they require extra special attention and care.

Recognizing Infection

Ear infections are very common among young children, but their harmful side effects make prompt treatment impera-tive. Although it’s rare, chronic ear infections can lead to a number of serious conditions including brain abscesses, facial nerve paralysis and hearing loss. To keep your child’s ears healthy:

Don’t delay treatment. If your child has an upper • respiratory infection, he or she is at greater risk for also developing an ear infection. Seek medical attention to avoid further complications.

Listen to your child. By elementary school age, chil-• dren should be able to verbalize how they’re feeling. If your child tells you his or her ears hurt, consult your primary care doctor.

Look for the signs. A child with an ear infection may • display symptoms besides pain, including fever, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping and ear drainage. Even if your child experiences pain relief when his or her ears begin draining, don’t assume this means the infection is gone.

Pay close attention. A child with an ear infection may • have difficulty hearing, as fluid may keep sounds from being processed appropriately. If your child asks you often to repeat yourself, or has trouble hearing things others do not, have his or her ears checked.

Two of my favorite TV series, 24 and Law & Order, will end this season, forever. While I have been a faithful viewer of both, I have mixed feelings about their demise.

The truth is, I found 24 very depressing. Not because of all the torture, killing and terrorist activity, but because the show made me realize how little I really get done in an average day compared to some people. I’m usually content with gulping a few of cups of coffee, responding to emails and paying utility bills. That’s it, I’m pooped. Where’s the hammock?

That’s why I found the show a little unrealistic. After watching all 24 episodes, I noticed that no one ever took a nap. Jack Bauer has a

granddaughter in this series, and I don’t think it’s believable that Grandpa could spend all day Tuesday saving the free world and not put his head down on the pillow for just a few minutes.

Unlike Law & Order where cops are always munching on Nathan’s hot dogs in Central Park or scarfing down take-out Chinese at the local precinct, the government agents on 24 are never seen with even a cup of coffee. The Counter Ter-rorist Unit spent millions on state-of-the-art computer tech-nology, but I’m telling you there’s not one coffee machine in the entire place. Maybe there’s a Starbucks nearby. I hope so. These people have been up all night.

My personal experience growing up near Manhattan differs from that of the 24 characters who apparently get anywhere in the city in three minutes or less. No matter where the ter-rorists are hiding out, the good guys are just an AFLAC com-mercial away. As a kid, I lived just 14 miles from LaGuardia Airport. If my family had a flight on Tuesday, we left late Monday afternoon, just in case we hit traffic.

In a recent episode of 24, the president’s Chief of Staff has a heart attack and is rushed to the hospital. In the next show, he’s just fine, walking around griping about the hostiles. But wait, it’s not the next week. It’s supposed to be 25 minutes

later. I hope the WellPoint and Anthem folks didn’t see that miraculous recovery. Call me old-fashioned, but a major cardiac event should qualify for an overnight stay.

I did learn something about bombs from this series. The scum who design them always include a beeping digital display of the time remaining before the explosion, providing important feedback for those disarming the device. The wires also have different colors for easy deactivation. Who says bad guys are inconsiderate?

And one thing about Law & Order. How is it that when the cops go to question or arrest a bad guy, he’s always home? What kind of killer sits in his living room every night watch-ing cable TV? And when the low-life answers the door, his girlfriend emerges from the bedroom to see what’s going on. Then this thug yells at her to get back and mind her own business. It’s bad enough that the guy is murdering people; does he have to bad mouth the little woman, as well? And you wonder why the divorce rate is so high in the criminal population.

By the way, Lost is also going off the air. It was on Tuesdays at 9:00 p.m. That’s the only thing about that show I’m really sure of.

“We have an amazing festival planned this year,” says Fred-erick. “It’s really a great event that brings our community together. From the church volunteers, to the local businesses and community members, everyone has really come through to offer one of our best events yet.”

Included in the line-up of family-friendly attractions is Kids Land, an area just for youngsters that will feature inflatables, games, hair and face painting, and balloon artists. There will also be a designated space especially for teens, with a DJ and other featured entertainment.

As always, the Vegas Room will be in full swing, with casino games available for adults. Bingo will also be an on-going attraction, as well as carnival games and rides, raffles and prizes, and the ever-present festival food.

With outside vendors providing an array of mouth-watering food choices, visitors can also sample roasted corn and pork tenderloin, just a sample of the menu prepared by the church’s own Knights of Columbus chapter.

Another top draw is St. Simon Idol, a contest modeled after the well-known format of American Idol. Ten contestants will compete for the top honor, which is to be named the St.

As one of the most anticipated local events of the year, the 2010 St. Simon Festival will kick-off the summer Thursday, June 3 through Saturday night, June 5, on the grounds of St. Simon the Apostle Catholic Church, 8155 Oaklandon Road.

In its 12th year, the festival has consistently grown larger, both in attendance and attractions, with an expected 20,000 visitors enjoying three days of games, rides, music and food.

“This is an event that takes hundreds of people from the community working together in order to make it successful,” says Phil Squier, co-chairman of the festival. Squier, along with fellow chair Chris Frederick, have worked together on the festival committee for three consecutive years.

Although the two head up the committee, there are close to 500 volunteers that work year-round to make the event

Simon Idol and receive a cash prize of $250.

“One of the best things about the festival is definitely the live music,” says Squier. “Not only do we have individual performers from the community scheduled throughout the day, but this year we also have the Flying Toasters and Loo Abbey headlining the evening schedule. They are both amazing bands,” he says.

Loo Abbey and St. Simon Idol are both on the schedule for Thursday, opening night. The Flying Toasters will perform on both Friday and Saturday nights.

While the festival serves as a fun, community-building event, it also serves as the main fundraiser for St. Simon, with proceeds going into the general fund and then allocated to support various needs of the church.

Father Bill Marks, pastor for St. Simon, has been with the church for almost two years, and enjoyed last year’s event for the first time. “The festival is a wonderful opportunity to connect as a faith community and be present to the commu-nity around us,” he says.

“It takes many people to make our festival happen and it is amazing to witness parishioners coming together for the success of a common goal,” Marks says. “What a wonderful annual event to bring people together to have fun and enjoy each other’s company.”

There is an old truth that says: You can only succeed in do-ing what you love to do. It was quite easy for David Darga to determine the kind of business he wanted to pursue after leaving a research and development chef position in the corporate world.

The solution emerged from Darga’s family’s love of gour-met coffee. This love and his experience culminated in the winning combination that gave birth to the Harvest Café Coffee Roasters, LLC.

Harvest Café carries one of the largest selections of coffees and whole leaf teas in Indy. Located near the intersection of Binford Blvd. and 65th Street, it carries a whopping 28 flavored coffee varieties, from vanilla to tiramisu to choco-late raspberry and snickerdoodle; 27 varieties of whole leaf gourmet teas, such as Tropical Green, Blueberry Strawberry White, and Casablanca Earl Grey. And, of course, there are a number of organic and Fair Trade coffees and teas.

What makes Harvest Café coffee so special? “Freshness and quality of the product set us apart,” says David. Harvest Café selects only the very finest green coffee beans from all over the world, and tries to find as many organic and Fair Trade coffees and teas as possible. They roast the coffee to make it really smooth and creamy with low acidity, and Dar-ga also roasts to order. The fresher the coffee, the less acidic it becomes. David suggests buying coffee for no more than a week or two. “After that, the coffee acquires a musty, earthy taste as some of the off the shelf varieties,” he advises.

Darga runs his roasting operations in a sustainable manner by using used coffee grounds for gardening; coffee packag-ing made of biodegradable paper and coffee roasting done in

batches that conserve energy.

Another important quality that makes Harvest Café stand out is David’s passion in giving back to the community. Harvest Café offers his product for fundraising activities by selling it to local organizations below wholesale prices. David has also dedicated his time to managing the Abundant Life Church local farmers market for the past six years. The market is located at 82nd and Hague, and is open every Thursday from 4–7 p.m. from June 3 to September 30. His ten-year-old son Billy helps dad set up and sell at the farmers market.

Buying coffee from local cafes, markets and co-ops is the final link in a sustainable coffee system. You can buy Harvest Café coffee at a number of local stores. Harvest Cafe coffee is available at Mama Bears and Jonas Market or through Farm Fresh Delivery, as well as online at www.harvestcafecoffee.com. Alternatively, you can stop by the Harvest Café showroom to sample the broad range of coffees and teas.

retirement. Not so with the Mud Creek Players, who perform and engage the community at the famous Mud Creek Barn, located at 9740 East 86th Street. They are celebrating their 60-year anniversary.

The Mud Creek Players started through friendships formed during World War II. Initially known as “Lemon Butters,” a group of women gathered together to support the war effort through sewing bandages and blankets. After the war, the fo-cus of the group changed and expanded to include husbands. Sol Blumenthol suggested the group would make a “fine dra-matic group,” as stated in the history of Mud Creek Players on their website (www.mudcreekplayers.org/history). And so it began. There have been many players over the years that have contributed significantly to the expansion and integrity of the performances and social functions of the group. Dottie Pierdos, affectionately referred to as “The Spirit of the Barn” (1924-2009), left a legacy at the Mud Creek Barn and others, as detailed by Dottie on the website.

If you haven’t taken the opportunity to attend an event at the Mud Creek Barn, plan to enjoy a performance in the upcom-ing 2010-2011 season, spotlighting “The Cemetery Club;” “Ghost of a Chance;” “Whose Wives Are They Anyway?” and “Lend Me A Tenor.” R.A.T.S. (no, not a pesky problem) is an incredible summer camp for the budding performers in your life. Coming in October is “Polter-Geist,” according to President Rick Perry and Vice President Mindy Sommer. A new event not to be missed!

Mud Creek Barn is known for many things in addition to the plays performed. The organization takes pride in the role of responsibility to their community. Throughout the years, they have supported the American Heart Association, Humane Society of Indianapolis and Butler University MBA Pro-gram, just to name a few. They also offer a paper recycling program on site in the parking lot, which this writer uses regularly. Many know the “Barn” as their voting locale.

the problems in Greece), the bull market in stocks should continue for several more months at least. Investors around the world are having problems finding places to put their money. They still don’t trust the banks and bonds are paying next to nothing these days. The stock market will be the best place to invest for the rest of this year, and possibly into next year as well.

So, do you just a bunch of cash and throw it randomly into the market? That’s not what I would do. Get a plan and wait for the opportunity to execute your plan. Small cap stocks are doing very well and I expect them to keep trending higher for the rest of this year. Begin thinking about small firms you admire and respect and create a watch list. At the same time, scope out a few big names like Intel and Proctor and Gamble, or something similar with decent growth rates and brand recognition. The next time the broad market falls a little, as happens from time to time, start buying. Hold onto them for the rest of this year and then re-assess.

The stock market can seem like a dangerous place, and from day to day it can be. With limited opportunities in other tra-ditional investment such as bonds and real estate, however, stocks can offer the rate of return you’ve been lacking over the last few years.

Tips on Today’s stock Market
