You might say Geist resident JoAnn Barsten, with her company JoAnn’s Impressions, is in the business of transformation. Because with her eagle eye for color and extreme attention to detail, Barsten transforms homes from ordinary to extraordinary, from almost chic to absolutely magnifique! Truly, the walls, floors, ceilings, countertops and even furniture of homes and businesses throughout the Indianapolis area, as well as Ohio and Florida, make up the enormous canvas on which Barsten works her craft.

Specializing in decorative painting, faux finishes and texturizing, what Barsten and her talented employees do is considered an art form in Europe. “It’s a very hands-on field,” said Barsten, who is a charter member of the International Decorative Artisans League (IDAL), a global nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting

and preserving the art of stenciling and related decorative painting.

“The field is ever evolving,” Barsten said, whose voracious appetite for learning new techniques has led her to work with a vast array of creative materials to create unique and eye-catching textures, including metallics, lace, cheesecloth and glass beads, among others. For the environmentally conscious, “It’s a great way to recycle glass,” she added. “It dries clear; you just see texture.”

For as many years as Barsten has been in this business (more than two decades now), “There’s not a job I’ve done that I haven’t learned something new,” she said, her passion for beautifying homes evident in the enthusiastic tone of her voice. “There are 20 different solutions to every problem.”

What’s more, there is an economic

benefit to JoAnn’s Impressions’ services.

“There are lots of ways to use what you have and make it new,” explains Barsten. For example, ceramic tile can be primed to create new tile, which can be far less expensive than completely removing the existing tile and starting from scratch. Or a Formica countertop can be transformed by applying SkimStone®, giving it a slate-like look that is substantially cheaper than granite.

Barsten prides herself on being a good listener. “You have to be sensitive to what the client wants,” she said. And repeat business suggests that Barsten is very good at doing that.

“The website (www.joannsimpressions.com) is a really good referral,” she said, but “at least 75 percent of my business is people who I’ve worked with before.

Black Friday is recognized as one of the busiest and biggest shopping days of the year, next to Christmas Eve and the Saturday before Christmas. Retailers usually have major discounts and ‘doorbusters’ all lined up and consumers have coupons in hand and are looking for the deal of the century. The term Black Friday means going from the red (indicating a loss) to black (profit). It signifies the hectic start of the holiday shopping season. And for some of us, it is a great time of year!

Most consumers who brave Black Friday are experienced shoppers with an action plan in place before they hit the streets. “I get up at 4 a.m. and head straight to Best Buy and

Radio Shack,” said Lisa Sims, a Carmel resident. “Then we brave ToysRUs and other stores based on the advertisements and our needs.” Lisa went on to say she maps out her shopping route the night before and gets all her coupons cut. “I’ve been doing this for the last 17 years. The most fun is having coffee and watching the sun come up!”

Preparation for Black Friday doesn’t just include the consumers and the retailers; it usually includes the people behind the scenes as well, like the marketing and advertising departments of certain stores or malls. Outdoor malls such as Simon Properties Clay Terrace and Hamilton Town Center are a few area businesses that go to great lengths to get organized for one of the major shopping days of the years. Last year, many Simon malls served warm chocolate chips cookies, had holiday entertainment, kids events and rejuvenation stations for the shoppers.

I recently spoke with the Directors of Marketing and Business Development, Tiffany Cring of Hamilton Town Center (HTC) and Catherine Fisher of Clay Terrace to get the inside scoop on this year’s activities and preparations. “We start our holiday preparations the beginning of October,” said Tiffany. “Figuring out Santa’s grand arrival is the biggest challenge. We strive to come up with something unique and different.” Santa will make his big (secret) entrance on November 26 at both locations, and shouldn’t be missed! “We are really fortunate because we pride

ourselves on Santa’s arrival on Black Friday, which is different from the indoor malls,” said Catherine. “We also work closely with our retailers to communicate with our shoppers.”

This year, HTC is trying something new to make the visit with Santa special. “We are having our elf helpers wear microphones directly connected to an earpiece in Santa’s ear so information such as the child’s name and wish list items are relayed to Santa,” explained Tiffany. “It should be a lot fun for both the kids and parents.”

One unique activity Clay Terrace is organizing this year is a Reindeer Run coordinated with Survival Fitness, which will be held on Saturday, December 4 from 10 am to 12pm. “There will be a mini-obstacle course for the kids to navigate,” says Catherine. She also said they will have live reindeer, Santa’s elves, arcade games, hot chocolate and cookies for the kids to enjoy. The event will take place on the grassy knoll by the children’s play area behind Kona Grill.

Everything from advertising and promotions to décor and entertainment are planned in advance. “All of our buildings and landscape trees are lined with lights and can all be turned on at once,” says Tiffany. “We want to create an experience for the shoppers and want our streetscape to have a ‘home-like feeling.” To aid this goal, HTC as well as Clay Terrace in Carmel will offer a few rejuvenation stations throughout the mall. The rejuvenation stations will include complimentary refreshments, entertainment, a place to sit and relax and complimentary

A new pizza place is now open in the Geist/Fishers area offering a variety of “cool creations” and a fun atmosphere as well!

Cool River Pizza is located at 12664 E. 116th Street, next to Yogi’s. The décor takes you away to a cool mountain setting for some fly fishing! There are a few games for the kids and a deck of cards on every table for fun while you

wait. But on my visit to Cool River, there was very little waiting and a lot of great tasting food!

The pizzas are called “cool creations” and follow the mountain river theme as well. There’s the Mighty Gorge pizza, which is loaded with meats, the White Water Dunk with white alfredo sauce and the Cool River Weeds pizza covered with veggies.

There are also great salads served on ice cold plates and bread sticks with a twist. Ranch chips are made with homemade dough covered in garlic ranch sauce and cut into little squares.

Kids can choose from the River Rat pizza (pepperoni and sausage) and the Kids Kayak pizza, which is smothered with cheese!

But what my 10-year-old boy wanted to try was the custom made to order pizza. First you pick from original, thin or honey whole wheat crust. Then you choose a sauce; there’s cool river red, garlic ranch, white alfredo and Bullseye BBQ sauce. Choose your toppings, and if you’d like, give your creation a name.

I’m not sure what I would call my son’s custom made pizza, but it was a thick crusted, Bullseye BBQ sauce pizza topped with pepperoni, sausage, ground beef, jalapenos and cheese!

Owner David Hammett knows a thing or two about pizzas and the fresh ingredients that do make a difference. He has been pleasing pizza fans for years with two stores in California (Roseville and Natomas) before moving to the Hoosier state.

“My wife wanted to come back to Indiana so I brought Cool River Pizza with us!” says Hammett. David, his

Maple Glazed Butternut SquashIngredients:1 large butternut squashOlive oilSea or garlic saltBasilCrushed red pepper flakesMaple syrup

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a rectangular glass pan with cooking spray. Rinse squash and place on cutting board. Cut lengthwise down the middle and scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp. Placing face down (to prevent danger of squash possibly rolling while cutting), cut about 2.5 to 3 inches wide. Place in baking dish with orange side facing up. In a small bowl, combine about 1/4 cup olive oil with a little sea or garlic salt, basil, and crushed red pepper flakes (I keep this concoction on hand at all times in my kitchen. I add spices to oil without actually measuring). Brush olive oil mixture onto squash. Cover with foil and bake for about 30 minutes. Remove from oven and brush on maple syrup. Put back in oven (without foil) for about 10 to 15 minutes more or until fork tender.

Makes about 6 to 8 servings.

Bethany is bright, strong, independent, beautiful and has zero self esteem. She has brought her finance, Floyd, and his mother, Verna, up to her cabin in the woods, the site of the hunting accident that killed Chance, her first husband. Much to her consternation, he or rather, his ghost is still there. Only Bethany can see him, so Floyd and Verna think she is crazy as she frantically tries to get rid of, well, it seems to them nobody. Chance, meanwhile, is doing everything he can to prevent Bethany from marrying Floyd. Bethany even brings in a

delightfully kooky psychic to help deal with the ghost of Chance.
