Big in Japan This season, local designers appear enraptured by the clean Japanese aesthetic. We celebrate the Eastern buzz
We love the way Japanese silhouettes have been given a quirky local twist:• Guillotine and L’Mad give kimonos an
architectural edge. • Craig Port’s Black Moon Rising range showcased menswear with a striking juxtaposition of modern and ancient Japanese aesthetics in luxurious fabrics. • 44 Stanley’s ayk brand mixes feminine street designs with a Japanese influence.
WHERE TO STAY The award-winning Mandarin Oriental Hotel needs to be experienced – even
if only for one decadent night. Situated in Nihonbashi, Tokyo’s business district, it offers the ultimate in luxe living with breathtaking views of this ever-bustling
cityscape. www.mandarinoriental.com

It’s a bug’s life
Christopher Marley works with “obscure organisms” to create masterful designs that make one marvel at the natural world. Initially repelled by insects, he delved
deeper and discovered a lustrous beauty in them. Now he wants to share his new-found perspective. Using linear and geometrically proportioned symmetrical
designs, his collections transform everyday bug into works of art. www.pheromonedesign.com

Wearables may be the buzz-word in tech, but is there a demand for it? Half of the Americans who bought a similar device stopped wearing them, so how can Apple
convince users that its much-anticipated iWatch – due to be
launched soon – is worth it? iPhone sales are up by 83% in China and momentum’s growing across Asia and even Europe. Aesthetics are
always key to Apple’s designs and the watch comes in silver, stainless steel and even an 18ct gold option, with a similarly jaw-dropping price tag. It lets you email, make calls
and send text messages, but critics say eye-popping apps are what will either drive or crash sales.
Apple says the iWatch is the most personal device it’s ever created and Wall Street is expecting it to
sell tens of millions of them.

“After wandering the jungle-tangled temples of Angkor Wat, I wanted to try some staple local food, which can include snakes, scorpions and other insects. I had the deep-fried worms, which were salty, crunchy and chewy. Something to tick off the bucket list,” says Cairncross, the new co-host for STA Travel and CliffCentral’s #StartTheAdventureNow. We figured she’s either the best person to give travel tips – or the worst, if you’re not equally adventurous! Here they are:
1 HANG WITH THE LOCALSYou’ll learn much more about the
place you’re visiting from them than from a guidebook. Go where they go. Do what they do. Ask for recommendations. Most people can communicate in basic English – throw in some body language and a hand gesture or two, and you’re good to go. Ultimately, people enrich your travels a lot more than sights do.
TRAVEL TIPSGlobe-trotter Lee Cairncross has travelled to 22 countries, seen Rome in 48 hours, dive-bombed into the Nile, partied in Lapa and eaten fried worms in Cambodia
2 SMILE. OFTEN.Having a friendly face
is a fast way to make new friends. It allows you to strike up conversations with strangers easily and they’ll be more willing to help you if you’re in a pickle. Also try learning how to greet and say a few helpful phrases like “please”, “thank you”, “yes”, “no” and “where’s the cloakroom?”.
3 EAT THE LOCAL FOODEven if you don’t know what it is.
Eat food from local street vendors. Try a bit of everything. Avoid touristy
restaurants and go where the locals go – your pocket will love you for this. If the menu’s handwritten in the local language, you’re winning.
4 KEEP AN OPEN MINDRemember what Clifton Fadiman said:
“A foreign country isn’t designed to make you comfortable. It’s designed to make its own people comfortable.” You’ll come across customs and traditions that may be very different from what you know, but that’s the beauty of travel. Accept random invitations. Remain flexible. Ask questions. Be curious.
5 TAKE PHOTOS AND TAKE NOTESHow often will you trek Machu Picchu
or dive the Great Barrier Reef? Chances are you’ll only do these things once, so photos are the perfect souvenirs to remember the people and places you’ve visited. But once you’ve snapped your pics, put your camera away and enjoy the experience. Much as you believe the contrary, once you get home, you won’t remember that Indian restaurant with the best dhal, the name of the band who performed at the Spanish Steps or that little town you got lost in. Jot it down. Catch #StartTheAdventure now on www.cliffcentral.com on 13 May and then on 10 June and 8 July.
