Global Aging InitiativeMcDonnell Academy Partner Meeting

The Global Aging Initiative is led by Washington University’s Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging at the Institute for Public Health.

The Friedman Center for Aging is committed to promoting a global society where all older adults have maximum opportunity for health, security, and engagement. We will achieve this by connecting individuals and organizations across disciplines to conduct innovative research and ensure its translation into practice, expanding education on issues relevant to individual and population aging, and supporting aging initiatives, locally, nationally, and internationally.

The Friedman Center for Aging is working with the McDonnell International Scholars Academy at Washington University to develop a global network of scholars focused on aging issues. The McDonnell Academy provides a foundational network of 29 partner universities for this initiative.

The objectives of this meeting are to: 1. Connect scholars from Washington University, McDonnell International Scholars Academy partner institutions, and other stakeholders.

2. Identify opportunities for collaboration on cross-national aging-related research and education.

3. Plan next steps for forming a collaborative on global aging.

Many countries, corporations, and foundations offer funding to support international scholarship. Below is a sample of funding opportunities in the USA that could support our cross-national work:

Programs Specifically for International Work

National Institute on Aging: PA-13-123/124/125 Regional and International Differences in Health and Longevity at Older Ages (R01) (R03) (R21)

Expiration Date: September 8, 2016

Amount: R03 Small GrantUp to $50,000 for one year, $100,000 for two years. R21 Exploratory/Developmental Research GrantUp to $275,000 for two years. R01 Research ProjectApplication budgets are not limited, but need to reflect the actual needs of the proposed project. The maximum project period is 5 years.

Purpose: This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications from institutions/organizations proposing to advance knowledge on the reasons behind the divergent trends that have been observed in health and longevity at older ages, both across industrialized nations and across geographical areas in the United States. This FOA is intended to capitalize on provocative findings in the literature which have been insufficiently understood and addressed. This FOA is also intended to capitalize on NIA’s investment in the development of cross-nationally comparable datasets that can be harnessed to study these research questions; these include the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), the English Longitudinal Study on Ageing (ELSA), the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), and the Human Mortality Data Base. Applications proposing secondary analysis, calibration of measures across studies, development of innovative survey measures, and linkages to administrative sources are encouraged. Applications are not restricted to projects using the NIA-supported datasets above and may propose research using any relevant data.

National Science Foundation: Catalyzing New International Collaborations (CNIC)

Expiration Date: No expiration listed. Applicants are advised to submit proposals at least nine months prior to the expected date of the proposed activity.

Amount: Up to $50,000 for one year.

Description: The National Science Foundation (NSF) will consider proposals from U.S. institutions for col-laborative work with investigators one ore more countries; no countries have a favored status for funding. The CNIC program will support U.S. researchers’ participation in activities intended to catalyze new inter-national collaborations. These include, but are not limited to: research planning visits, initial data gathering activities, proof-of-concept, and single or multiple research visits within a maximum 12-month time period. CNIC supports collaboration with international researchers in any field of science and engineering research and education supported by NSF. Of particular interest are projects which represent new, previously unfund-ed scientific areas for the principal investigator, or areas in which preliminary data is needed for establishing a proof-of-concept. The outcome of CNIC awards should be submission of a full research proposal to an NSF research program.

Washington University Global Aging Initiative- Seed Funding

Deadline: October 18, 2013

Amount: Budgets may range from $5,000 to $40,000

Description: The Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging at Washington University in St. Louis is developing a Global Aging Initiative with partner institutions of the McDonnell International Scholars Academy. To advance research on topics related to older adults, later life, and aging societies, the Friedman Center for Aging is offering seed funding to support cross-national projects. The aims for this funding opportunity are to: 1) Build a network of scholars from Washington University and McDonnell Academy partner institutions who are engaged in cross-national research; and 2) Foster work that explores cross-national issues and leads to larger research projects that will advance understanding and action critical to enhancing the lives of older adults and aging societies. Each project must have at least two principal investigators (PIs): one or more tenured or tenure-track faculty from Washington University and one or more faculty from a McDonnell Academy partner institution. Funds can be used for travel to meet and develop a research proposal, conduct pilot studies, or extend existing work conducted by one of the lead partners (e.g., expand country-specific research to cross-national). Projects must be completed within two years from the start date of January 1, 2014. Note: Copies of the call for proposals will be distributed at the June 23 meeting.
