Prayers for those who are suffering
through the April 25th
earthquake in Nepal
The Christian Chronicle has reported that there are at least 100
Churches of Christ, with a combined membership of 2,000 to
2,500, meeting in districts of Nepal affected by the 7.8-
magnitude earthquake. Four who died in the quake lived in
Nepal's Rasuwa District — one of the regions
hard-hit by the quake. Most of the houses collapsed in the area
where the church members died. Please pray for this nation as
they struggle to overcome the devastation left by the quake.

"Power for Change" One of the remarkable qualities of Scripture is its honesty. The Bible tells us the truth about the weakness, not just of its villains, but also of its heroes. For instance, Judah, the fourth son of Jacob, is the one through whom, ultimately, Jesus came (Gen. 49:10; Rev. 5:5). However, to say that Judah had clay feet would be a gross understatement. Judah, with his five other full brothers and four oldest half-brothers, hated Joseph (Gen. 37:4), actively plotted to kill him (vv. 19-20), and was the source of the wicked idea to sell him to the Ishmaelites (vv. 26-27). Judah went on to break his promise to give his youngest son to his daughter-in-law in marriage (Gen. 38:11, 14) and then he slept with his daughter-in-law, thinking that she was a prostitute (vv. 14-18). Clearly, Judah was a very flawed person--hateful, murderous, heartless, untrustworthy, lustful. However, something changed in his heart. Twenty-two years after Judah had taken a leading role in selling Joseph, he found himself bowing before that very same Joseph in Egypt. Joseph hid his identity from his brothers and manipulated the situation so that he could keep his full brother, Benjamin, with him in Egypt. Thinking that Joseph intended to imprison Benjamin for a crime, Judah offered himself as a prisoner in Benjamin's place. He said, "Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord's slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers. How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! do not let me see the misery that would come on my father" (Gen. 44:30-31 NIV). Judah changed so much that he was hardly the same man that he had been twenty-two years before. No longer was he calloused and selfish. He had become sensitive and selfless, as he demonstrated by his willingness to suffer so that Benjamin and his father would not have to suffer. The truth is that any person, regardless of their degree of wickedness, can change through God's power if they are willing. Morally speaking, no one is as they unalterably must be.
