Q1. In what ways did your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
How does my media product use, challenge or develop forms and conventions of real media products?Research
Over the course of my work, I researched for my media texts I
used several publications such as newspapers; national and local, and
many more.
I began my journey by collecting five newspapers from five different days and analysing them to come up with a rough draft of how my
newspaper will look

After looking at ‘The News’ for over five days I
was able to recognise crucial layout features which meant I could devise a draft version of the structure of my newspaper

I liked the way the title was positioned on the newspaper but I thought the size of the headline was too small so, although you can see in my rough design that it is long and thin, I made it more noticeable by increasing width
and height
I think the positioning of the image and headline was very suitable and good for a newspaper as it draws you into
the image more with the title just above it
In my newspaper, even though I use the way in which ‘The News’ have include about what’s inside the newspaper I have developed by having more. You can see this at the
bottom, top and more detailed story

s
From looking at all the banner adverts from the five newspapers I looked at, I could see that all of them were aimed at the local audience. All the adverts were from local business’ from
the Portsmouth area. I knew that this would be sensible to do because of the newspaper would only be sold in area’s around Portsmouth. I made my advert in thinking that the local would be interested in a seafood grill as it would be appropriate as Portsmouth is situated
by the sea. This means that my advert will play it’s part in enticing my audience to buy this paper. My advert also uses a clever pun to humour the audience also.

Adverts/competition
With the competition on the front page of the paper you can see I have followed similar conventions of what ‘The News’ have done. I think my competition is
better in some ways however. I think the ‘Marina Mail’ branded iPhone is a much
better idea for competition than an Indian meal because then the
advertising of the newspaper can carry on when someone wins the iPhone as
other people will see it after it has been won. Think of it as ‘free’ advertising. I do
think however that I could further improve my competition by having the ‘win’ in red like ‘The News’ have done because it grabs the reads attention a
lot better than black.

I started off my research into how to write my newspaper by looking up YouTube
videos. This was very helpful and showed me what I was doing wrong when I first
started writing and taught me how to correct it. This video can be seen by clicking the link at the top of this page. A feature which was the most useful for helping me to write an effective story is the inverted triangle. This basically told me that the start of your story has to include a summary of what you are
going to talk about and the it gradually get’s less and less needed information until the minor details which is how the newspaper
story is at its most effective.
Looking at stories from the actual newspaper showed me how to layout my text in a similar newspaper style. I could see that it had to be paragraphed and use columns to suit style.

My website does follow similar conventions to other local newspaper websites but I also develop. In my website you can see that the colour scheme is a lot more prevalent than ‘The News’ website. You
wouldn’t be able to tell that the newspaper and the website are related if it didn’t have the title at the top. I have developed this and used my colour scheme from my newspaper and followed it through to the website. Now you can distinctly tell they are related. Also in my newspaper there is actual interactivity in
my website. This is shown with the embedded YouTube video which is to do with a story seen in the newspaper, this type of interactivity is not seen with the actual news website along with my website
having a live countdown to the passing of the Olympic flame through the city. I think my website has built on the boring format of ‘The News’ website which puts it to shame.

Poster 1
You can see here that this poster I have created uses aspects of the two posters I
researched which you can see. The interesting lines have
been used and expanded from the poster on the left and the interesting shape of the text
has been inspired by the poster on the right. I have
combined the two posters and taken aspects from both to
create one killer poster. I think that my poster could be
further improved though, by maybe including more about what’s going on inside the
newspaper and what to look forward to each day to entice the reader supplementary.

Poster 2
You can see from my second poster that it has heavily been influenced by the sun’s version of a newspaper poster. I just thought it was such a good idea I would recreate my version of it but basically by that I mean
‘use the forms and conventions of this media product exactly’. Although I do believe my poster has included more of a colour scheme and sort of layout with the red lines also. I think if I had enough time to do all this again I would try harder to combine my two posters to create the best of both worlds and it may come with a stronger outcome then I
already have.
