The number of students attending varies from year to year, and in recent years the average number has been about 600. In accordance with the Regulations of the University of Edinburgh one-half of the qualifying classes required for graduation there may be attended in this School, the fees paid for such classes being the same as those for the corresponding University classes. Special classes of instruction for Dental students are included in the curriculum. Post- graduate courses are conducted in conjunction with the University. Further particulars regarding the School, also its calendar (price 9d., including postage), may be had on application to the Dean of the School, Surgeons Hall, Edinburgh. ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS OF EDINBURGH In addition to the Diplomas granted by the Scottish Conjoint Board, the Royal College of Physicians grants its Single Licence to candidates whose names are already on the Medical Register. The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh grants a Membership and a Fellowship. Membership.-A candidate, who must be a Licen- tiate of a British or Irish College of Physicians, or a graduate in medicine of a University, approved by the Council, and 24 years of age, is examined in medicine, therapeutics, and in any branch of the departments of medicine specially professed, such as general pathology, psychology, public health, obstetrics, gynaecology, diseases of children, tropical medicine, or medical jurisprudence. Fellowship.-The Fellows are selected from the ranks of the Members. ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS OF EDINBURGH The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh admits to the examination for its Single Licence any candidates who hold a Diploma in Medicine of any British, Indian, or Foreign university or of any British College of Physicians, or of the Society of Apothecaries of London or Apothecaries’ Hall, Dublin, granted under the provisions of the Medical Act, 1886, whose preliminary examination and course of professional study is proved to be sufficient to Eulfil the requirements of the College, or to those who have passed a full examination for any of the above. Female practitioners are admitted to the Licence of the College and also to the Fellowship, and the regulations apply to practitioners of either sex. The College grants a diploma of Fellowship after examination to the holders of British surgical degrees or diplomas and the holders of recognised degrees of the Universities of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The Fellowship.-Candidates must be 25 years of age and in practice for at least two years. The examination is written and viva voce, and includes surgery and surgical anatomy, operative surgery, and clinical practice. One optional subject must also be taken, the range of these specialisms covering nearly every branch of medicine. Candidates are not allowed to appear for more than three times at the examinations, unless by permission of the Presi- dent’s Council. Three weeks’ notice of intention to appear for examination must be given by the candidate to the College. ROYAL FACULTY OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS OF GLASGOW The Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow grants a Fellowship and a Licence to be held separately. The Licence is granted as a separate qualification to qualified practitioners in Medicine after examination in surgery, including surgical anatomy and clinical surgery. Fellowship.-The Fellowship of the Faculty is granted after examination in medicine or surgery, together with an optional subject, which may be anatomy or physiology, or be selected from any special branch of medicine or surgery. MEDICAL EXAMINING BODIES AND SCHOOLS IN IRELAND UNIVERSITY OF DUBLIN, TRINITY COLLEGE (SCHOOL OF PHYSIC) Matriculation. - University students take the Entrance of Trinity College and a Junior Freshman Term or a special Medical Preliminary ; -, Extern Students, any examination recognised by the General Medical Council. Pre-registration Examination in Elementary Physics and Chemistry.-Before beginning the five years’ Medical curriculum students must pass an examina- tion in elementary Physics and Chemistry. This examination is held at the end of September, in January, in March, and in July. Courses in prepara- tion for it may be taken in the School of Physic. Degrees in Medicine (M.B.), Surgery (B.Ch.), and Midwifery (B.A.O.).-Candidates for these degrees must be of B.A. standing and must be for at least five academic years on the books of the Medical School, reckoned from the date of registration. The Arts course may be taken concurrently with the Medical course, and the B.A. degree need not be taken before the final medical examinations, but the Medical degrees are not conferred without the Arts degree. Pre-registration Examination in Elementary Physicsand Chemistry.-Before beginning the five years’Medical curriculum students must pass an examina-tion in elementary Physics and Chemistry. Thisexamination is held at the end of September, inJanuary, in March, and in July. Courses in prepara-tion for it may be taken in the School of Physic.

Degrees in Medicine (M.B.), Surgery (B.Ch.), andMidwifery (B.A.O.).-Candidates for these degreesmust be of B.A. standing and must be for at least fiveacademic years on the books of the Medical School,reckoned from the date of registration. The Artscourse may be taken concurrently with the Medicalcourse, and the B.A. degree need not be taken beforethe final medical examinations, but the Medical degreesare not conferred without the Arts degree. and Infant Hygiene Clinics, also not less than 20personally conducted cases, five months, one ofwhich must be as a resident intern student.(6) Ophthalmic Surgery, three months. Three groupsof examinations have to be passed. PreliminaryScientific Examination, including Physics and

Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology. IntermediateMedical, Part I., including Anatomy and Physiology,Biochemistry and Histology; Part II., includingApplied Anatomy and Applied Physiology ; andthe Final Examination, which is divided into Part I.,Materia Medica and Therapeutics, Pathology andBacteriology ; and Part II., Medicine, including ClinicalMedicine, Hygiene, Jurisprudence, and MentalDiseases ; Surgery, including Operative and Ophthal-mic Surgery ; Midwifery and Gynaecology. Part I.may be passed in the fourth year, and Part II.completed at the end of the fifth.

Doctor in Medicine.-A Doctor in Medicine musthave passed all the qualifying examinations andmust be a B.A. of three years’ standing. He mustalso submit a thesis and pass an Examination beforethe Regius Professor of Physic.

Master in Surgery.-A Master in Surgery must be aBachelor in Surgery of the University of Dublin ofnot less than three years’ standing and must producesatisfactory evidence of having been engaged for notless than two years from the date of his registrationin the study or study and practice of his profession.He must then pass a special examination.

Master in Obstetric Science.- A Master in ObstetricScience must be a Bachelor in Obstetric Science oftwo years’ standing, and must produce evidence ofhaving been engaged in the study or practice ofObstetric Medicine and Surgery during two years.He is then required to pass a special examination.Diploma in Gynaecology and Obstetrics.-A post-

graduate diploma is conferred upon registered medicalpractitioners who take a six months’ course at theRotunda Hospital or other recognised institution, asix months’ course in Trinity College, and then passa special examination. The minimum time requiredfor the complete course is nine months.

Bachelor in Dental Science and Master in DentalScience.-The regulations under which these degreesare awarded can be obtained by application to theRegistrar of the School of Physic.

All Degrees and Courses of Instruction are open towomen students.

Post-graduate Instruction.-Arrangements have beenmade, with the approval of the Board of TrinityCollege, for a post-graduate course of instruction atthe School of Physic during the autumn from Monday,Sept. 17th, to Saturday, Oct. 6th. Women graduatescan be accommodated at Trinity Hall.

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND

Matriculation.-All students must pass a matricula-tion examination ; the examination taking place inJune and September in Dublin, and at certain localcentres, includes five subjects, three of which must beIrish, English, and mathematics. All students mustpass in Irish except students not born in Ireland, andother students whose home residence shall have beenoutside Ireland during the three years immediately pre-ceding their matriculation ; but all such students willbe expected to attend a course of instruction in IrishLiterature and History prior to obtaining any degree inthe University. The following are the subjects for exa-mination : (1) Irish. (2) Latin. (3) Greek. (4) French.(5) German. (6) Italian. (7) Spanish. (8) Portuguese.(9) Welsh, or any other modern language approved bythe Senate. (10) English. (11) Mathematics. (12)History. (13) Geography. (14) Applied Mathematics,or Physics as an alternative. (15) Chemistry. (16)Botany. (17) Agricultural Science. (18) Commerce.(19) Music, and for women candidates only (20)Physiology and Hygiene. Students entering fordegrees in Medicine or Dentistry, if not alreadyregistered by the General Medical Council, must takeIrish, Latin, English, Mathematics, and a fifth subject.The medical degrees granted are :-M.B., B.Ch., B.A.a.,. ; ltl.D., M.Ch., M.A.O.,

The Constituent Colleges of the National Universityof Ireland at which the full curriculum for medicaldegrees can be obtained are University College,Dublin ; University College, Cork ; and UniversityCollege, Galway.

University College, DublinMatriculation.-Almost all the students of the

College are matriculated students of the National Uni-versity of Ireland. The pre-registration examinationin physics and chemistry is taken after matricu-lation either at the beginning of or during thewinter session. The course is of five years’ durationand dates from the passing of the pre-registrationexamination.

Degrees of T.jB., B.Ch., and B.A.O.-The FirstExamination includes Applied Physics, AppliedChemistry, Botany, Zoology, and Applied Biology.The examination may be taken in two parts:Part 1., Physics and Chemistry ; Part II., Botanyand Zoology. Honours may be obtained onlywhen both parts are taken as one examination. TheSecond Examination includes Anatomy and Physio-logy. Both must be passed at the same time. TheThird Examination (Part I.) includes Pathology,Materia Medica, Pharmacology, and Therapeutics.Part II. (Third Examination), taken at the end of theFourth Winter Session, includes Hygiene and MedicalJurisprudence.The Final Examination in Medicine, Midwifery,

Surgery, and Ophthalmology includes both thetheoretical and the clinical branches. No student canenter for the M.B., B.Ch., or B.A.O. until the end ofthe fifth year after registration, when the curriculumhas been completed. The degree of M.D. may beobtained either by examination or on publishedwork.
