SUPERANNUATION ALLOWANCE. - Mr. Herbert IChabot, M.R.C.S., late resident medical officer of the Cam- c

berwell Infirmary, has been granted a superannuation allow- Iance of 200 per annum.

PRESENTATIONS.—Dr. John Meredith of Welling-ton, Somerset, has been presented with a tastefully designedepergne by the members of the local classes in connexionwith the St. John Ambulance Association.-On the occasionof the Mayor of the Borough of Reading publicly distributingat the Town Hall on the 1st inst. the certificates of the St.John Ambulance Association, for efficiency in rendering firstaid to the successful members of the Borough AmbulanceClasses, he presented, on behalf of the classes, Dr. George H.R. Holden with a handsome silver inkstand for his appreciatedinstruction on " first aid."-The pupils attending the ambu-lance classes in connexion with Bolton Infirmary have pre-sented Dr. Johnston (teacher of the female class) andDr. Mothersole (teacher of the male class), honorarysurgeons to the infirmary, with a handsome surgicalbag and a fully-equipped secretaire respectively. FOREIGN UNIVERSITY INTELLIGENCE. - Basle :Dr. F. Egger has been recognised as privat-docent inMedicine. Dr. F. Miescher, Professor of Physiology, beingobliged to retire on account of the state of his health, Dr. R.Metzner of Freiberg (Baden) has been appointed to thechair.-Breslau : Dr. Buchwald has been granted the title ofProfessor.-Geneva: Dr. H. Audeoud has been recognised asprivat-docent in Pediatrics, Dr. Bétrix as privat-docent inGynaecology, and Dr. E. Toxicology.SHEFFIELD ROYAL HOSPITAL. - The annual

meeting of the Governors of the Sheffield Royal Hos-pital was held on the premises on July 31st, theRev. H. H. Wright presiding. The secretary read thesixty-third annual report, which mentioned that thefirst portion of the new hospital had been opened,and that the financial position of the institution had

greatly improved. The appeal sent out by the presi-dent (the Duke of Norfolk) since the last annual meetinghad resulted in a sum of over £30,000 being either promisedor received for the new building fund. Their Royal High-nesses the Duke and Duchess of York had graciously openedthe new wing and laid the foundation-stone of futureadditions, and Her Majesty the Queen had been pleased tocommand that the institution should in future be known asthe Sheffield Royal Hospital. During the year just endedthere had been an increase of 333 in the patients, and anincrease of £329 in the annual subscriptions, but the totalincome fell short of the expenditure by f.395, and a largesum still had to be raised in order to cover the cost of

building. The Duke of Norfolk was re-elected president,and Sir Frederick Mappin, M.P., and Sir Henry Stephensonvice-presidents.THE POLICE SURGEONS’ ASSOCIATION.-The

annual meeting was held at King’s College on July 30th, Mr.T. Bond being in the chair. A report from the council wasread by Mr. Hopkins (hon. sec.), referring principally to thedeputation to the Home Secretary in the early part of theyear and its results. A vote of thanks to Mr. Asquith forhis courtesy in receiving the deputation and for carrying outsome of its recommendations before leaving the Home Offiaewas unanimously adopted.
