infrastructure using ESRI ArcGIS 9.3:– Harmonization of the spatial datasets of the numerous
Med-islands– Improvement of the usability and accessibility of
standardized spatial information.
• The design and realization of the SDI started with the harmonization of the various datasets provided by the project partners, including:

INSPIRE themes (in Annexes I and II of the Directive) and feature classes of “non-INSPIRE-themes”

• Definition of attributes for each feature class• Assistance to the Med-islands data-providers,
including instructions on CRS and metadata standards

• Eight different options are currently under deep investigation for the integration of the 3D WebGIS technologies into the overall geoportal system architecture, all of them aiming at optimizing the geoportal performance in terms of the following user requirements:
– Clients thin as much as possible, able to consume the (even complex) services published on the server-side.
– Compliance with the networking services and interoperability standards & requirements of INSPIRE.
– Compatibility with the MedIsolae-3D portal layout & overall architecture (yassoo™), which in turn needs to be potentially linked to Web-geoplatforms like Google Earth™, MS Virtual Earth™ and ESRI ArcGlobe™.

• Interoperability:– a WMS has been created for all the published SDI
spatial datasets– Any GIS client/viewer supporting the WMS
capability (such as Quantum GIS, udig, ArcGIS Explorer and many others, most of them freely available) can access the Santorini SDI spatial datasets simply by selecting the option “Add an external WMS service” and typing the corresponding url http://79.5.161.139:8399/arcgis/services/Santorini_mxd/MapServer/WMSServer/
