LAW LAW FELLOWSHIP Target: To raise £850,000 to endow the College side of one Law Fellowship In 2014 Merton College is 750 Years Old. The College, assisted by many old Mertonians, is raising £30 million to coincide with this anniversary and to sustain the excellence of Merton well into the future. The College is seeking to raise £850,000 to strengthen and secure its teaching of Law as part of this 750th Anniversary Campaign. In particular, the College wishes to endow the College side of one of its two Law Fellowships. The Merton College Law School mirrors that of the University of Oxford, which includes many of the world’s leading legal scholars. No other law school in the world offers such close contact between teacher and student, training lawyers in tutorials as well as lectures and seminars. The BCL (for students trained in the common law) and MJur (for students trained in the civil law) are the most demanding and most rewarding graduate law degrees in the world. The new Masters in Law and Finance has made Oxford the leading centre for education in law and corporate finance. Oxford also has the world’s strongest doctoral programme in law. Merton Law students benefit from the complimentary academic expertise of the two principal Law Fellows: Mindy Chen-Wishart, Senior Tutor in Law and Reader in Contract Law and Professor Jennifer Payne, who specialises in Corporate Finance Law (see overleaf). The Merton Law School is a diverse, friendly and close-knit community, comprising of students studying for the 3 year BA in Jurisprudence, the 4 year Law with Law Studies in Europe (France, Germany, Holland, Italy), and both taught course and research graduate students. There are roughly equal numbers of men and women and students come from a wide range of backgrounds and countries. As well as providing Merton Tutor-led introductory tutorials, to orientate students into the law course, the College also invites specialist external tutors, so that students are taught by an expert in their field and experience a broad range of tutors and colleges. At Merton, Law students also benefit from a richly varied programme of extra-curricular academic and social events, thanks to the extremely successful student-led College Law Society, the Halsbury Society, and the Merton Lawyers’ Association meetings in London, hosted each year by a different leading Law Company. First and second year Moots (sponsored by Fra John Samuel Eidinow and Clyde and Co, respectively) add to the varied programme, and prizes for the best first year university exam results (sponsored by Norton Rose) and for the best performing second year lawyer (sponsored by Allen & Overy) reward the excellence for which Merton Law students are well known. Merton Law Alumni include senior figures in the UK and across the world: the Rt Hon Sir Brian Leveson (1976), President of the Queen’s Bench Division, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe QPM (1988), Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis of London, as well as senior QCs, Judges, Partners of Leading Law Firms, and Law Deans and Professors around the globe. law appeal card v7 FINAL.indd 1 06/05/2014 10:13:24

LAW FELLOWSHIPTarget: To raise £850,000 to endow the College side of one Law Fellowship

In 2014 Merton College is 750 Years Old.

Professor Jennifer Payne joined Merton as a Fellow and Tutor in 1998, as the Travers Smith lecturer in Corporate Finance Law. She was formerly a solicitor with Herbert Smith, and then a lecturer at Robinson College, Cambridge. She was promoted to her Professorship in Corporate Finance Law in 2010. Her research and teaching focuses on Corporate Law. She writes widely on the subject in leading journals and edited collections and has published a number of books, including Corporate Finance Law: Principles and Policy.

Merton’s Senior Law Fellow, Mindy Chen-Wishart was previously Senior Lecturer at Otago University in New Zealand and Rhodes Research Fellow at St Hilda’s College. She specialises in Contract, Restitution and Philosophical Foundations of the Common Law. She is author of Contract Law (4th ed), and is leading a large project on the Contract Laws of Asia, to be published with OUP. She holds visiting professorships at Hong Kong University and the National University of Singapore. She will deliver the Fourth Annual International and Comparative Quarterly Lecture as author of the best article in 2013.

Every gift made to Merton from now until the end of 2014 will be counted towards Merton’s 750th Anniversary Campaign, SUSTAINING EXCELLENCE.

“The level of intellectual challenge throughout my Law degree has been exc iting

and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Merton. We are enormously privileged

to be taught by experts of the field throughout the University. However, what

makes Merton so spec ial is the strong relationship the students have with our

tutors in college, who have offered us endless support throughout the three

years.”
