This again, needs to be approved by the government departments and we await that confirmation. We are likely to follow the pattern from last year but must wait for official communication before we can share this with you. Ms Y Dannawy Assistant Principal Welcome parents to another jam packed newsletter from Hartland International School. I wish to take this opportunity to address a few issues circulating in social media forums. The first is about the school calendar. At present we have yet to receive confirmation for the academic calendar of 2018-2019. I understand that this is frustrating for many parents who wish to plan ahead, but rest assured that all schools are in the same position and awaiting confirmation from the appropriate authorities.

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

All students in Years 1-8 will have a Ramadan assembly on Sunday May 13 before Ramadan is scheduled to start later that week – again all confirmation of the start of Ramadan will be in the official media and announced from school as soon as we are notified. I hope, if this is your first Ramadan in the UAE that you will ask your son/daughter about the purpose of the Holy Month after this assembly….and of course we hope to see all of you for our Iftar later in the month.

We wish you an enjoyable final few weeks of spring before the temperatures begin to soar and look forward to seeing you at our forthcoming Parents Evenings, our Jungle Book production, summer concerts and much more!

Ms Y Dannawy

Assistant Principal

Welcome parents to another jam packed newsletter from Hartland International School.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION UPDATE

It has been a fast start to term 3 for the PE department. We have a very short sporting season this term due to Ramadan so we will be aiming to squeeze in all the fixtures in the next month. We are entered into the cricket and rounders’ leagues and there are also swimming galas and Under 9 basketball fixtures to be held throughout April and into May. We wish the Hartland students continued success in representing the school and I am sure they will continue to perform well.

In Foundation Stage 1, swimming for our youngest students has commenced and they are now swimming twice a week. All three classes have started fantastically and we have already seen improvements in their water confidence and ability. I hope they continue to enjoy the lessons with Mr Whitty until the end of term 3.

In terms of swimming we have just finished the House swim galas for the Primary and Secondary school and I would like to thank all the students for their hard work and practise that went into the events. There were some remarkable achievements for so many of the students, ranging from those who maybe are not that confident in the water to those who were able to demonstrate their amazing swim stroke and technique. I would like to thank Mr Whitty, Mrs Horwell, Mr Conception and Mr Alvin for their hard work in preparation for the galas, ensuring an enjoyable and safe event for all. A big thank you to all those staff who helped and especially those who were in the pool assisting the students.

Good luck to all our students for the remainder of this season.

GIFTED AND TALENTED

Mrs H GreenGifted and Talented Coordinator

The Auditorium at Hartland came to life with the characters from a multitude of Shakespeare’s works on Tuesday 17 April, when Hartland hosted a Monologue Slam competition for Year 7 to Year 9. Six schools from across Dubai participated in both performances and workshops. The standard of performance was incredibly high and the students all enjoyed the time spent together in workshops learning from peers from other schools.

We were very lucky and honoured to have Afra Atiq as our judge. She also treated us to a couple of performance poetry pieces.

At the end of the morning when the winners were announced, Ben Brookes and Chaeli Jade pienaar were thrilled to be recognised as some of the top performers. A huge well done to all our performers; Kristian Maglanty, Mariam Hassan, and Nandini Nambiar, Harriet Benne, Candela Gutierrez, Sakina Fakhruddin and Zeynep Kucukatay who qualified to participate in the event and all performed admirably.

CALLING ALL GENERAL KNOWLEDGE EXPERTS

Hartland will be hosting a General Knowledge Quiz in June for students from Year 4 to Year 6 and we are asking for any interested students to come along and take part in our initial selection process. This will involve a written general knowledge quiz. Students who can show varied skills in general knowledge will then be selected to participate in our first ever inter school General Knowledge Quiz.

If you are in Year 4 to Year 6 and would like to be considered for this, please come and see Mrs Green in her office opposite the Art room, or email [email protected]

LIBRARY UPDATEThe new term has got off to an amazing start in the library, with a tremendous amount of books being returned and borrowed, and the Secondary Library now in operation.

It is now more important than ever that books are returned to the Library when they are due, and in order to help the smooth running of the system, could I please ask you to remind your children to bring back any books you may have lurking at home. There is a book return box outside the library, and beside my desk, so please pop any books you find into the boxes. There are a significant number of books that are missing and I would be so grateful if you could have a rummage at home for any book which might have gone astray.

Finally, please feel free to come at any time before or after school from Monday to Wednesday to borrow books under your own name to enjoy at home with your children (or for yourself!).Happy Reading!
