On a recent long-haul flight I watched the gripping mountain-climbing thriller Everest. It was one of those epic movies that leaves a lasting impression: totally engrossing, yet difficult and disturbing to watch at the same time. It jolted my senses and stirred up all sorts of emotions … as I sat on the plane with tears streaming down my face, I realised it was not the sort of thing you should watch when you're stuck in a confined space surrounded by several hundred people.Anyone who has seen the movie, or remembers the real-life event as it unfolded in May 1996, knows the tragic outcome. Highly-regarded Kiwi mountaineer Rob Hall was one of the guides leading a group expedition to the summit of Mount Everest. Hall perishes in a blizzard on his descent, as do several other climbers. As he teetered on the brink of death he had a heart-wrenching final phone conversation with his wife, Jan, who was back in New Zealand and pregnant. Sadly, Hall never arrived home to meet his new daughter.Since seeing Everest, I have wondered many times about the psyche of adventurers, explorers, extreme athletes and elite mountain climbers such as Rob Hall. What drives these people to take on the fickle forces of nature and push themselves mentally and physically to the point of exhaustion, risking pain, injury, illness – even death – to achieve a goal or a dream? What is the attraction and why do so many chase that addictive sense of satisfaction and fulfilment? Those same questions came to mind earlier this month when I was a spectator at the Coast To Coast multisport race. It was fascinating and uplifting to watch people of all ages, colour, shapes and sizes as they ran, walked, skipped or hobbled down the finish chute at New Brighton. All of them were clearly exhausted but, at the same time, elated that they had just achieved a significant goal. One friend of mine ran for seven hours in agony after badly twisting his knee, and may well have done serious long-term damage. Another friend struggled with nausea and cold sweats for the entire kayak leg, so crippling was his fear of falling out and drowning in the unpredictable Waimakariri River.Yet, straight after the race, as they gulped their cold beers in the finishers' area, all the dramas and low points were instantly forgotten. That indescribable feeling of having conquered their demons and proved to themselves, and others, that they could push themselves out of their comfort zone and achieve what had at first seemed impossible, made it all worthwhile.Of course many of us do not consider risking life and limb to scale the heights of a massive mountain, or traversing the width of the South Island by foot, kayak and bike, as must-do activities to be ticked off our bucket list. Whatever challenge you decide to tackle, the important thing to remember is the pride and ecstasy you will feel when you've overcome the odds, the elements, or simply your own fear and self-doubt. Just imagine crossing that finish line – whether it be literally or figuratively – and that should be motivation enough.

Hide and seek for art lovers

Held in true treasure-hunt style, tokens will be

cunningly hidden in the gardens opposite the YMCA

Thirty-six works of art worth more than

$5000 will be given away in a hide-and-seek

day of fun at the Botanic Gardens on

Sunday 28 February.

The event, organised by Oi YOU! and the YMCA,

starts at 9am. It is part of the Spectrum Street

Art Festival. Held in true treasure-hunt style,

tokens will be cunningly hidden in the gardens opposite

the YMCA - all you have to do is find one to win a piece

of art!

The artworks – each laser-cut into wood – are

designed by The Shady Collective. They are a humorous

and unique take on the Jetsons cartoon that can be

seen as you enter the Spectrum Exhibition at the YMCA.

“We don't make it easy for people to find the tokens,

and so younger kids may start to lose interest,” says

festival director George Shaw. “That inspired YMCA

CEO Josie Ogden Schroder, who has youngsters of her

own, to come up with the idea of introducing lots of

other fun stuff for the younger ones to do too.”

Activities for children will include scavenger hunts,

henna and face-painting and lots of fun prizes.

Spectrum has been a huge success, with more than

40,000 people already visiting the main exhibition at

the YMCA on Hereford Street.

So if you have not been to

Spectrum yet, this Sunday could be

the ideal opportunity: hunt for art

treasure, then head over to the

outstanding exhibition just across the

road.The Spectrum Exhibition is open

seven days a week, from 9.30am to

5.30pm Saturday to Wednesday, and

until 8pm on Thursdays and Fridays.

The world-renowned opera star is excited to be invited to bring her music to six centres around the country. “I am looking forward very much to connecting with many friends and renewing old friendships. and arias that will

delight music lovers.

The historic Isaac Theatre Royal is the venue for the opening performance from Dame Kiri, who will undertake a six-venue

recital tour of New Zealand. Dame Kiri last performed on the Isaac Theatre Royal stage just 10 days before the 22 February 2011 earthquake. That show attracted the last 100 percent full house before the theatre was closed for four years.

The Christchurch evening will be a 'gala black tie and red carpet' fundraising event to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the 2011 disaster, and to celebrate the first fully operational year of a fabulous restored theatre in the heart of the city.

“The Gisborne and Tauranga events are already sold out,” tour organiser Paul Gleeson said. “I think people realise that this could be a last opportunity to experience one of the world's most-loved voices.”

Dame Kiri will be accompanied by one of New Zealand's finest musicians, the internationally-acclaimed pianist Terence Dennis, and the repertoire will feature a specially-selected programme of romantic songs and arias that will delight music lovers. These will include Dame Kiri's personal favourites from Mozart, Handel, Vivaldi, Puccini, Heggie, Guastavino, Obradors, Ginastera and Canteloube, as well as a selection of traditional folk songs.

Stress-busting tips for sellersSelling your home can be one of the most stressful events you will ever experience. Harcourts' real estate agent

Cindy-Lee Sinclair shares her tips on how to beat the blues and maintain your sanity during the process.

Enlisting a competent real estate agent who you can trust is as important as their experience and credentials.

Clear and effective communication imbues trust and keeps a lid on stress. “A good agent will keep you abreast of all the complicated issues so you can make informed decisions, feel part of the process and have peace of mind that your agent is acting with your best interests at heart.”

Getting organised will certainly keep stress to a minimum. Enlist a cleaner and a gardener prior to viewings and plan ahead for childcare.

Another valuable tip Cindy-Lee has for prospective sellers is to remain open-minded and let go of any expectations. Attending a few auctions before your big day will give you a feel for the process and what to expect.

“If expectations are unreasonable, sellers run the risk of being disappointed. Talk with your agent and ask plenty of questions about the process.”

Selling your home is a big undertaking, Cindy-Lee warns, so make it easy on yourself by doing something you enjoy every day. Take yourself out for lunch during open homes and, above all, never

let your wellbeing take a back seat. For a stress-free selling experience and

expert advice on all other real estate matters, contact Cindy-Lee on 027 4888 616 or email [email protected].

Shaken yet again by recent violent aftershocks five years on from the initial big one, creative thinkers like

OUT & ABOUT

How did the idea for Ministry of Awesome develop from its inception to its fruition? Its creation came about in a highly organic, highly iterative fashion by now-Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck; Student Volunteer Army founder Sam Johnson; head of UC School of Maori and Indigenous Studies Sacha McMeeking; and myself. It started with a bunch of conversations, exploring what we could do to be most useful and impactful in post-quake Christchurch. When it was first formed, the organisation was kind of a bucket to house our various projects, but it quickly evolved from that to being a supportive champion for the many brilliant ideas seen bubbling up within the community.

What various initiatives is Ministry of Awesome running to make a better, brighter city? There are a huge variety of initiatives led by Chief Awesome Officer Lauren Merritt. Our Event Awesomist, Erica Austin, runs a programme of events that includes weekly Coffee & Jam sessions and monthly Double Shot evenings. Our Startup Activator, Catarina Gutierrez, connects one-on-one with people in the early stages of starting a business to guide them through the process. Our co-working space is fantastic for freelancers and small organisations to work in a collaborative environment with like-minded people. And last year, in partnership with the Unreasonable Institute in Colorado, we ran our first Unreasonable Lab – a five-day business model validation lab. It was a huge success and we're looking forward to additional programmes just like it. We also worked with Canterbury Development Corporation (CDC) to create InnovationMap.co.nz, a website that helps entrepreneurs find helpful resources available to them.

What inspires you most about living in post-quake Christchurch? I love the kinds of conversations we can't have anywhere else in the world. What is the best way for citizens to engage in the recovery of the city? What should the role of the arts be? How can the transitional movement inform longer-term, more permanent development? How do we prioritise potentially competing economic, social, political and environmental interests? Although these questions are relevant worldwide, they've really been brought to the fore in our unique post-quake environment, and I love the way ordinary citizens are experimenting with the answers.

What qualities make a successful entrepreneur and what makes the difference between success and failure of an idea? There are three parts. 1. The first requires two essential personal characteristics from the entrepreneur: a commitment to making it work and an obsession with continuous learning. Without commitment you're likely to give up — entrepreneurship is a long, hard, slog, with frequent setbacks and disappointment – and without the obsession with learning, those setbacks will derail you.2. The second is about the team. In 2012 we had Ernesto Sirolli speak at our TEDx event, and he talked about the three cornerstones every successful business needs to master: the product, marketing and financial management. He also said that never in the history of the world has a single individual been able do all three beautifully – you may be able to get by, but one of them will be your passion and the others will be done reluctantly because you have to. So often we're taught this myth that entrepreneurship is a solo sport, when really entrepreneurship is the art of teamwork.3. The third is about the market. The famous Silicon Valley entrepreneur and investor Marc Andreessen has said that the market is more essential than product or team. For example, in 1984 FedEx launched Zapmail, the first faxing service. However, the market wasn't ready, and so it was a total flop. It's extremely difficult to close a sale if people can't get their heads around what you do.

What would your advice be to those who want to make a difference to the fabric of our city's rebirth?I'll plagiarise my mom, who was plagiarising someone else: Show up, pay attention, speak the truth, and be open to outcomes.

Great attractions by the seaside

By Hans Petrovic

On a hot day, the beaches of Sumner are packed with people of all ages. But it is not just the beaches that are attracting people to Sumner. Five years on from the earthquakes

the local businesses have also re-established themselves, offering a wide variety of cafés and restaurants and shops ranging from fashion boutiques to surf equipment.

The road to Sumner is much better now. The Ferrymead Bridge has been repaired and there is even a

coastal pathway from there all the way to Sumner,” says the co-ordinator of the Sumner Business Group, Kath Cross. “People didn't feel safe on the roads for a long time, but they are now 80 percent fixed. I feel business is back to pre-earthquake levels at weekends and, in the evenings, the restaurants are packed.”

Martine Marshall, the co-owner of Le Petit Hotel, at 16 Marriner Street, has a personal insight into the long-time popularity of Sumner. Many of the guests to her charming, French-style hotel are visitors from overseas who do not bother hiring a car while staying there. To them, all the attractions of Sumner are within easy walking distance.

There's a pub, The Cave Rock Bar, and it's not far to the Hollywood Cinema and then on to all the restaurants and shops. It's somewhat further along the beach to the Ocean Café & Bar at Scarborough, but a very pleasant walk.

At the Hollywood, it's always a pleasure to discuss the history of Christchurch

cinemas or the latest in movies with the owner, Lang Masters, who has been running the theatre for 52 years with his wife, Maureen. “We bought the place last September. We're the owners now, whereas we only rented it before. It's better for us in the long run and we now have another person to eventually take it over,” says Lang.

Around the corner, in Wakefield Street, there have been quite a few changes. The pub on the corner has new owners and has been renamed The Turtle Shack Bar & Bistro. The Bamboozle has also been taken over and changed into the very interesting Le Xom Indochinese-Vietnamese street-cuisine restaurant. Opposite that is the very popular Indian Sumner restaurant and, right next to the Indian Sumner, is the unique Delicatessen, which is run by Tanya Michaels,

the wife of Glenn, the head chef and owner of the nearby Headless Mexican. What's so great about the Delicatessen is the wide range of ready-to-eat takeaway meals available.

Not far around the corner, in Nayland Street, is the L'Estrange Art Gallery, which is associated with the work of Bryan L’Estrange, Nigel Brown, Hamish Allan, Hannah Kidd, Tony De Latour, Simon Kaan, Alan Pearson and Ewan McDougal.

Their work was previously on display on huge canvases on the containers leading into Sumner.

Current and former dancers, parents, teachers and staff joined Southern Ballet’s Founder Lorraine Peters, her Co-Patron Fiona Tonkin and Chairman of the Board Clifford Cox to share a few memories before enjoying the opening night of the gala production of Cinderella. 1. The Over-sized Coat

Androgynous, effortless and guaranteed to combat the elements, this is perhaps the number one item every girl should have in her wardrobe when facing a cool Canterbury winter.2. The Turtleneck

Don't bag it until you've tried it! Not only does the turtleneck get full points for practicality, but it's also clambered its way to the top of our hot-right-now list. Nothing says preppy quite like a stylish skivvy.3. The Midi Pencil Skirt

Designed to flatter, this piece oozes sophistication and is equally as fashionable in the workplace as it is away from the office when you're in hang-out mode. Pair with a simple white shirt and ankle boots for a convincingly chic look.4. The Knitted Dress

Warm and comfortable, the knitted dress is perhaps your cosiest companion during the winter months.5. The Culotte

Not only do culottes suit a number of figures, they also radiate femininity while paying homage to old-school elegance. Smart-chic has never been so easily achievable.

FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY

This is a trend that appeals to the modern woman. She needs designs that exemplify both her independence and vision – a contemporary approach to fashion that

sees her move effortlessly through her day with strides of confidence.

Perhaps the best thing about this 'new utility' look is that it is open to interpretation. As the purpose and success of functionality alters with whatever it is you're undertaking, people can get experimental in tailoring the trend to suit their tastes and needs.

For casual and everyday wear, channel unisex comfort by simply dressing up or down a look depending on the occasion. For more formal situations and events, timeless designs bring an element of sophistication, while accessorising with contemporary flair offers a modern touch and makes the whole look relevant.

Whether you're a fan of draping or structure, plain or printed textiles, pick a style that is functional and flattering to you. Finish it off by adding your own personal touch to really nail the utility trend and command the respect you know you deserve.

By Lydia Truesdale

The emerging 'new utility' trend is pushing the boundaries of design and functionality. It is certainly

an art: balancing clean aesthetics with practical designs to produce stylish yet very wearable attire.

In preparation for the change in season, Ketz-ke is drawing on the theme of 'luxe utility'. And,

true to form, the new release is casual with an urban edge. Inspired by the military look, the

spotlight is turned on the colour khaki. The khaki and soft grey marle tones are a

reflection of the casual, yet urban, style required for a New Zealand autumn.

Be a force to be reckoned with in Ketz-ke's Paper Bag Pant. Whether you're at work, out and about during the weekend or simply relaxing at home, this style is

a cut above your everyday pant, offering a comfortable and cool boyfriend fit. The soft fabric and top-stitching bring subtle feminine detailing to a traditionally male-owned hue, providing the perfect amount of 'camo' cover.

Other utilitarian pieces include the Lunge Jacket and Link Dress. Both are useful and practical items that will carry you through the coming season's unpredictable weather with laid-back ease.

Peter specialises in

the treatment of

varicose veins using

minimally invasive

endovenous techniques.

Aching or painful legs, swelling and visual changes to veins are all

common symptoms of varicose veins. For many people these may cause discomfort that they have either put up with for years or

hidden away.

Christchurch-based vascular surgeon Peter Laws offers effective treatment for varicose veins through VeinsNZ,

bringing with him years of experience and international expertise.

Peter specialises in the treatment of varicose veins using minimally invasive endovenous techniques including laser, radiofrequency ablation with the Venefit™ procedure, as well as new technology with Venaseal™.

With 10 years of specialisation, Peter leads the field when it comes to introducing new and effective technology for troublesome veins. He was the first to perform the Venaseal™ procedure in New Zealand, as well as the Venefit™ technique in West Sussex in 2006, just months after the first case was treated in Europe.

Newly available Venaseal™ uses glue technology to seal the veins. The procedure minimises the number of local anaesthetic injections required; reduces the need to wear compression stockings; and is virtually painless – all of which make it a great choice over the hot summer months.

Further information, including details for booking a consultation with Peter, can be found at www.veinsnz.com or simply give Peter a call on (03) 365 4502.

Enhancing your natural facial beautyChristchurch cosmetic medical clinic Face Value specialises

_in non-surgical cosmetic enhancement procedures that little touch of botox or dermal filler which can make you look and feel great.

Dr Philip Frost answers some commonly asked questions…

What sets Face Value aside in a crowded marketplace? As a full member of the NZ Society of Cosmetic Medicine, customers can be assured they are being treated by a doctor with advanced skills and qualifications in cosmetic medicine – especially important when administering prescription medication such as botox. What are the common sites for botox?Botox is predominantly used to treat lines and wrinkles on the upper face, but can also be used to upturn the mouth corners, adjust eyebrow shape and soften lip lines. It is also effective in treating excessive sweating. How long does botox last?On average three to four months for a first-time client. However, after several treatments it can last longer. How can I get rid of that tired, gaunt look I have developed as I have aged?As we age we lose fat beneath the skin. Dermal fillers replace loss of volume, reshaping the cheeks to give a more youthful, healthy look. How long do dermal fillers last?Anywhere from eight months to two years or longer, depending on the type of product and the amount used. I do not use permanent fillers due to their lower safety profile.I would like more well-defined and slightly fuller lips, but don't want a crazy Hollywood trout pout…There's been a shift away from large volumes of fillers, which create an unnatural appearance. I now use smaller amounts to create subtle definition and give lips a more natural result.

Face Value offers a complimentary 30-minute consultation to discuss your concerns and provide a management plan, with a free follow- up appointment after treatment.

Delicate designs are dominating best-dressed lists right now. Think luxurious, lightweight textiles like

silk and satin, complemented by spaghetti straps and streamlined silhouettes – it's all about looking sleek and feminine at top-tier events.

When it comes to colour, jewel tones are a commanding trend to explore and experiment with. This look is slightly easier to conquer, with individuals able to wear their preferred style and remain radiantly on-trend as long as the gown or accessories resemble a gemstone colour. Think emerald, ruby, opal or sapphire.

The last key trend to follow is 'shimmer and shine'. Sequins are proving a glamorous way to impress right now, featuring in varying degrees of exposure. But whether it's with just a sprinkle of sparkle or glistening in it from head to toe, this is a look that attracts all the right kind of attention.

If bling is not usually your thing and it feels a bit out of your comfort zone, try to weave it subtly in to your overall look through your shoes, some small and delicate earrings or a clutch or evening bag.

Hollywood's awards season brings out the best in designers and fashionistas alike and ignites all kinds of trends.

Although red-carpet events aren't regular fixtures on the Canterbury social calendar, it's still nice to draw inspiration from A-listers when considering what to wear to black-tie

events, balls and galas.

Marrying black with white is a classic autumn/winter look that never dates. Individually, black and white can be very one-dimensional colours to wear, but

bringing the two tones together gives an outfit an element of depth.

The great thing about monochrome is that it can be done differently every season, drawing inspiration from current prints, patterns and cuts when bringing the two tones together.

For the coming season there are options aplenty, but geometric interpretations and layering of block colours appear the frontrunners. The graphic stripe is also back with a bang, being used in varying thicknesses to produce different aesthetics.

To take the look to the next level and really make monochrome relevant today, opt for a longer hemline. The midi length – falling somewhere

between the knee and the ankle – is a guaranteed way to achieve femininity, especially when working with

the more androgynous colour palette of monochrome. When pairing black and white, the key is to not overdo it.

Decide what you want your focal point to be and work around this to achieve a bold, but not hypnotising, look.

“Our philosophy is to retain a

BUILDING YOUNG MINDSthrough play, outings and nurture

A short drive from Christchurch's CBD, down tree-lined Worcester St, takes you to the Lindisfarne Nursery School, a popular preschool and nursery which seems to just get better over time.

So what is their secret? Director and owner Michelle Cuthbert believes having consistent staff is the key.

“My mother bought the original wooden building with its big, high ceilings and spacious rooms back in 1987. She was a registered nurse and saw the need for a preschool in the area. I was a student at university studying literature at the time, and she asked me to help run the centre. I've been here ever since! Many of our trained teachers stay for long periods too. It's very important for the children,” Michelle adds with a smile.

Later, in 1994, the building next door was added and transformed into a nursery, allowing more room for the under-twos.

With a traditional central hallway and designated play areas, including a library and construction rooms, the building works well for the different ages. Children feel at home and enjoy the extensive back garden for playing in water, sliding and riding bikes and trikes.

“Our philosophy is to retain a family atmosphere in the school so children learn

as they would in their own homes with sleep routines, tidying up after themselves and respecting each other. These are the building blocks for younger minds.”

It is quite evident that the pre-school and nursery is filled with love and empathy. The children seem happy and the

mood is calm and organised. The chicken casserole served at lunchtime certainly smelled delicious, and conjured up feelings of 'a home away from home'.

During the year children are taken on small outings in small groups. One of the visits is to Fitzgerald House, where the children enjoy singing to the elderly. On occasions they visit local parks.

“For older pre-school children we have an assigned teacher preparing children for primary school and, from all accounts, it certainly helps with settling them into the school system. We've never needed to advertise our school. Recommendations from past parents really help.”

Lindisfarne's school hours are from 7.30am to 5.30pm to suit working parents.

NAILING IT: Treat your tips and toesSummer can be a hard time for our nails. Sand between your toes may feel great, but it

JAZZ HANDS

Hot colours this season are metallics, natural-looking light and airy shades and, of course, some brights. Geometric patterns feature, such as fine or chunky stripes and checkerboard designs. Try out

French tips with a twist of colour, and pay attention to the base of your nail by adding a mirrored French look in varied shades or a touch of glitter. Pick up accents in your clothing and accessories, or go for nails that make a statement in themselves.

OPI Nail Lacquer has some wonderful shades in their recently-released New Orleans Collection, with a rich creamy green, shimmery periwinkle blue, light orange, nudes, bright or blush pink, luscious purple and metallic pewter. These are all on-trend colours for summer.

Take a copy of your favourite look into your nail salon, or try some of the simpler styles yourself at home. For an easy at-home DIY manicure or pedicure, start with some new shades you love. Clean and shape your nails, give them a buff and a soak, push back your cuticles and apply your polish. Start with a base coat then apply two layers of polish. Then you can get creative and add some simple designs. Finish the process off with a top coat to ensure your new look lasts longer.

RECREATIONSPORTS FUN ACTIVITIES WHERE TO GO WHAT TO DO HIRE

A room full of people laughing and laughing; those big belly laughs that make you feel great. This is the world of Laughter Yoga, a class that involves no gags or Christmas cracker jokes, but

laughing for the simple sake of laughter itself and the wellbeing it brings.

Celebrating their ninth birthday next month, St Albans Laughter Club was the first in the South Island to

be established. Every week people come together to sit in a group, make eye contact and begin laughter exercises which are combined with deep diaphragmatic yoga breathing.

“There is a real connection – it's incredible. It is very simple but life- changing,” says Hannah Airey, founder of the Club and the Lotus Community Wellbeing Trust. “When someone else is laughing it is hard not to laugh with them.”

Those who attend do so for a wide variety of reasons - for help in dealing with serious issues such as a cancer diagnosis

By Rachel Smith or grief; for anxiety and stress; or simply because they have forgotten how to laugh. There are no limits when it comes to gender, age or physical abilities – all you need is some comfortable clothing to wear and a willingness to give it a try.

Hannah says that laughter works at a neural level on the body, triggering the release of endorphins and serotonin, and also provides a cardiovascular workout that doubles your normal resting heart rate. Importantly, even if you are faking your laughter your body still has the same biological response, providing enormous psychological and physiological benefits.

The Laughter Club is run by volunteers for a $2 koha, with proceeds forming part of the funding for Lotus Community

LAUGHTER: THE BEST MEDICINE

Wellbeing Trust. A non-profit organisation, the Trust provides subsidised laughter programmes for community groups in need, including mental health support groups, drug and addiction services, aged care, disabilities and schools.

Hannah also offers laughter yoga workshops for workplaces and conferences, as well as an upcoming two-day wellness workshop on May 14-15. The two-day workshop is ideal for personal development and anyone who is interested in running their own Laughter Yoga group, with proceeds from all workshops in turn assisting the Trust's work.

Williams is one of the most well-known females in New Zealand equestrian circles. After a

horse riding accident left her a C6/C7 tetraplegic in 2002, she has continued to forge a successful career in sport horse breeding with her husband Sam's family stud, Little Avondale, in the Wairarapa. She is also widely known as the face behind the CatWalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust and has earned national honours for her extensive charity work raising money and awareness for spinal injuries.

As well as being a keynote speaker at a sponsors' evening, Catriona Williams will declare the Show 'open' on the Saturday. Wanaka Show co-ordinator Jane Stalker is thrilled that someone of Williams' calibre is so keen to attend. “It's an honour to have Catriona here for the Wanaka Show. We know she'll be a big drawcard for the hundreds of horse riders competing here, but her inspirational story also has wider public appeal,” she says.

The Wanaka A&P Show is one of New Zealand's largest agricultural and pastoral events. It attracts more than 35,000 people each year, including many from the Canterbury region. Run over two days and set on picturesque showgrounds overlooking Lake Wanaka, the Show includes traditional features such as equestrian and livestock events; home industry displays; wool classing; and more

Catriona Williams, who represented New Zealand on the international stages at Badminton in 1997-1999 and the Open European Championships at Burghley in 1999, will be the Wanaka Show's 2016 guest of honour on March 11-12.

That aside, poke, seaweed, and vegetables are picked to be top of the international pops. Poke? Looking puzzled? Pronounced like okay, this is a popular

Hawaiian dish of raw fish – usually tuna - marinated in soy and sesame served on seasoned rice. It's tipped to be the new sushi.

Hurray, it's goodbye kale. Seaweed, the new super food that is full of antioxidants, fibre, iodine and good fats, shoves kale off the top of the healthy ‘must-eat’ list. The list also features umami, a taste sensation that is distinctly lacking in kale! Other veggies will star on our plates as we cut down on meat, proteins and carbs. Cauliflower steaks and spiralised vegetable noodles (dig out that spiraliser from the kitchen drawer) will frequently replace meat and pasta. Those stalks and stems don't go into the compost either. Root-to-stem dining is making it big, with off-cuts being eaten rather than tossed in the compost.

Cooking methods will be bold and brave, with lots of fire and smoke. Think barbecue, home smoking and blackened veggie salads.

Whole milk, butter and cheese are back in the good books as we realise that fat is not all bad and those of us who like a bit of the naughty can breathe a sigh of relief. Donuts are in vogue and fried chicken is going to go gangbusters.

If you believe the trend predictors, it looks like an interesting year. Bon appétit everyone.

WHAT WILL WE BE EATINGA new year with new beginnings and potentially new food trends. If we follow international pundits' predictions, our diet will be healthy and somewhat vege-centric. It is, after all, the United Nations International Year of the Legume.

IN 2016?Seaweed, the new super food that

is full of antioxidants, fibre, iodine and good fats, shoves kale off the top of the healthy ‘must-eat’ list.

FOOD FROM THE HEART

“It's just such a magical setting.” That's been the reaction from couples who have held their weddings at the recently-opened Memorys Restaurant near Springston. Mature trees, well-established gardens, doves flying in and out

of a dovecote in the large courtyard and delightfully quirky rustic decor elements all contribute to this aura of the beautiful and tranquil fairy tale.

Memorys is intimate too – like a 'home away from home' with a European feel, intermingled with

kiwiana. There are two main indoor areas that can be utilised for weddings and other private functions. The main restaurant dining room seats up to 24 people, while The Boardroom is an intimate elegant dining area which seats up to eight people. Then there is the large courtyard area, perfect in summer for larger functions and small boutique weddings of up to 60 guests.

The food at Memorys is another of its great charms. For your wedding or group function their chefs' objective will be to serve you nutritious, simple and effective dishes that will tantalise your taste buds. Memorys' catch phrase is soul food; food

to feed the soul

from the heart to feed the soul. It's all about selecting and combining the best local ingredients available and creating dishes that taste delicious and give a sense of wellbeing to all who come and visit their special place.

Memorys Restaurant is located at 227 Leeston Road, Springston. Opening hours are Wednesday to Sunday 10am-4pm, as well as Thursday to Saturday 6.30pm-11pm (bookings essential). For further information or to make a booking for your function, phone (03) 329 5554. Email [email protected].

@Tony's Teppanyaki is justly famous for fresh, delicious Japanese food with an innovative, modern slant.

But while @Tony's Riccarton is brisk and busy, @Tony's Ferrymead is elegant and spacious, with a leisurely ambience. It's a place where

people can take their time, relax and enjoy the ambience.

Fresh seafood is a speciality here with fresh crayfish, scampi, bluff oysters, tuna and fish of the day featuring in the menu and all served with the impeccable care and flair typical of Japanese chefs who really respect their ingredients.

The only fine dining Japanese restaurant on the Sumner side of the city, staff go out of their way to ensure customers have a special experience, whether it's enjoying an after-work drink at the bar, being entertained by the knife-whirling chefs at the teppan, or in one of the dining tables or private booths.

Cocktails and mocktails are created to order; there is an extensive drinks list and the restaurant is the only place in the South Island to have Orion beer, all the way from Okinawa, on tap and fresh daily.

Evening diners can read the specials of the day, plus interesting information about the restaurant, on a rotating big screen.

The menu is extensive, with both traditional and modern dishes, and there is plenty to tempt the most ardent carnivores. As well as the seafood, the Ferrymead chef's exclusive dishes include pork and garlic chive gyoza, (delicious little Japanese dumplings) and – the chef's pièce de resistance - teppan apple pie. Here East meets West with house-made apple pie wrapped in a pancake and cooked on the teppan.

Eating at @Tony's Ferrymead is an adventure from start to finish.

The numbers tell the story

If an eatery is busy it has to be good – that's the rule of thumb for seasoned travellers. Therefore Dose Diner in Blenheim Road must be very good.

Any lunchtime it's literally bursting at the seams with people dining in or queuing for takeouts. Smart operators book their lunch table ahead.

The reason for this popularity is the excellent food and quality coffee. Beans are from the famous Lyttelton Coffee Company. And yes,

at Dose they do trim milk. The all-day breakfast menu is available from 7.30am to 2.30pm. It's imaginative and expansive and, as well as the usual favourites, offers more exotic fare like Spanish beans and pulled pork with coleslaw. The raspberry and mascarpone brioche French toast served with berry compote, bacon, vanilla custard and maple syrup is a customer favourite. The Japanese-style chicken burger is a close second. Coming soon and also guaranteed to make a hit are waffles. They'll be served American style with fried chicken, or with ice-cream for the traditionalists.

A loaded cabinet is full of sweet and savoury treats all made onsite by a gifted baker who takes no short cuts. Watch for her daily specials and her spectacular lemon cake.

Dose Diner has a funky industrial ambience with lots of timber, massive industrial light fittings and

graffiti-style artwork. There is plenty to amuse and entertain just in the décor.

Situated next to Hubbers, Dose is conveniently close to the Westfield Riccarton and The Warehouse and is ideally situated to provide superb office catering to nearby businesses. Open seven days, Dose is licensed and has plenty of parking.

The kitchen is the domain of chef Thomas Hiddlestone. “I was very lucky to find him,” says Hamish. Just 26 years old, Thomas prides himself on good food, prepared with a personal, sometimes adventurous, touch. “I encourage him to do his thing,” says Hamish.

The dining is fine and the menu is small, but select. Dishes pay tribute to the classic, but are served with a modern flair. Each is cooked to order. Fillet beef main is one of the most popular dishes. Sourced locally, it is served with hand-cut fries, béarnaise sauce, Caesar salad, and crispy onion rings. Who could resist?

Party Pizzeaswh figs, grapes, feta and vania vincoo syrup

Makes 12 pizzettas

INGREDIENTS: Pizzetta Dough350 ml warm water 4 tsp runny honey

12 / tsp dry yeast2

60 ml (2 fl oz) extra virgin olive oil 4 cups + 2 Tbsp plain flour (plus extra for dusting) 2 tsp sea salt To assemble and bake 2 Tbsp vanilla oil for brushing – (heat 180 ml of grapeseed oil over a low heat and when warmed pour over 2 scraped vanilla pods and seeds) 1 cup feta cheese, in small cubes4 figs, dried or fresh, in wedges 48 (170 g) grapes, halved, preferably purple wine grapes 6 thyme sprigs 2 Tbsp parmesan, finely gratedTo serve 2 Tbsp vanilla vincotto syrup as follows: ,700 ml red wine, 2 vanilla pods split, 60 ml runny honey, 1 wide strip orange peel, about 6 fresh cherries. Place all ingredients in a small saucepan. Slowly simmer until reduced by 2/3. Remove peel and discard. Remove vanilla pods and insert into a small sterilised bottle. Pour in vincotto liquid and seal. For the syrup to drizzle on the pizzettas take 60 ml of the vincotto liquid and slowly reduce in a shallow pan to thick syrup, about 10 minutes. This makes 2 Tbsp - enough for the drizzle. Lemon peel, threadsCracked pepper

METHOD:Pizzetta doughPour warm water in the bowl of a stand-mixer with the paddle attachment or, if mixing by hand, use a large bowl and wooden spoon. Add honey and stir to combine. Sprinkle yeast over surface. Allow to foam, 10-15 minutes. Stir by hand or turn mixer on low speed and add oil. Then pour in half the flour with all the salt. Add remaining flour a bit at a time until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Place dough on a lightly-floured work surface. Knead until dough comes together into a smooth elastic ball. Place in an oiled bowl, cover with a towel and allow to rise one hour in a warm place.

To assemble and bake oPreheat oven to 250 C.

Put a pizza stone in oven to heat or prepare a heavy foil-lined baking tray brushed with grapeseed oil. Punch down dough. Knead a few times on work surface, using flour sparingly. Cut into 60g portions. Roll out each pizzetta to a thin circle and place on pizza stone or prepared baking tray. Brush tops with vanilla oil. Arrange topping ingredients, finishing with a sprinkle of parmesan. Bake for 10 minutes until edges are browned. To serve Drizzle pizzettas with vanilla vincotto (see above). Scatter threads of lemon peel and sprinkle with cracked pepper.

CUISINE By Nicholas Henare

Ring the culinary changes from day to nightThere is something of a chameleon of the culinary scene in the heart of Halswell. It's Verge Café and it might be called the Superman of cafés. In the daytime it's the mild-mannered Clark Kent café where

chef Kylie Delahunt will present you with fantastic Kiwi classic cuisine from 7am until 5pm. Then in the evening it transforms into Superman restaurant for the beautiful flavours of northern Thailand.

If you're after a great start to your day, breakfast is on the menu until 2pm. The eggs benedict is a must, with brioche and

poached eggs drizzled in hollandaise. You'll find the servery stacked with treats as well. With relaxing booth seating and an al fresco area which overlooks a children's playground, why not stay for a while and enjoy a delicious barista brew or two while the kids have fun? There is also an excellent children-friendly menu for them to choose from.

You can either dine in or take away from the Thai menu after 5pm. The Thai chef from northern Thailand has traditional dishes like Kaeng pa (forest curry) and Phad Chad Talay (seafood), all with that particular spicy northern flavour.

At 53 Caulfield Ave, just off Halswell Junction Road, Halswell finally has a great Thai food experience. Give them a call on (03) 261 9043 to book or order your Thai takeaway. But be sure to try Verge Café some time very soon.

Straw offers strong, safe and sustainable optionNew technologies and materials are transforming the look and feel of our homes and businesses.

As supplies of cement and steel for architecture begin to dwindle, an increasing number of New Zealanders are turning to natural earth and straw for new home construction.

Min Hall – the name behind an international building conference in Methven in March – says we

should be trying to use less concrete and steel. Both leave a hefty carbon footprint, and straw panel construction offers a great alternative.

“There are some exciting developments in straw panel construction and we are really excited by this,” Min Hall says. “There is a real potential for this in New Zealand – particularly in Canterbury, the grain bowl of New Zealand, where there is an enormous need for warm, healthy houses

with a light environmental footprint.”Producing crops which can wholly be

utilised – grain heads and grain stalk, hemp where the whole plant can be used for fabrics, oils and building materials – make good business sense on the grain fields of Canterbury, Min says.

Importantly, these materials offer a strong, safe and sustainable option. Traditional brick and wooden house walls lose more heat than a straw bale building. Pompallier House in Russell is one of the oldest surviving natural buildings in New Zealand.

“It was constructed in 1842 by French priests using rammed earth. Today it is a

thriving tourist attraction,” Min says. “Earth buildings built to the specifications of New Zealand Earth Building Standards performed really well in the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes.”

It's not just straw that is changing the face of the construction industry, with a wide range of building alternatives now available.

“It is reassuring that there are timber merchants who specialise in untreated timber, and that there is at least one earth plaster commercially available as well as silicate-based paints,” Min says. “The rise in acceptance of wool as an insulation product is also encouraging.”

New Zealand's oldest rammed earth building, the 19th-Century Pompallier House in Russell.

RAISING THE BAR IN

An innovator in frameless glass design for almost 30 years, New Zealand company Euroglass is leading the

charge once more with three new products for showers, balustrades and sliding doors.

Cut down on cleaning time in the bathroom with Euroglass Timeless Showers. These

feature an invisible magnetronic coating that repels water and condensation at a faster rate than traditional glass enables water to simply slide off. This prevents the build-up of lime scale that leaves a murky residue. Unlike other 'easy clean' treatments, the Timeless glass coating is integrated into the glass itself, ensuring it maintains its brilliant transparency for years to come.

For added safety and peace of mind for you and your family, Euroglass Sentryglas balustrades are a hundred times stiffer and five times stronger than other laminated products. Originally used in high-security glazing and hurricane windows, the

Sentryglas interlayer is bonded between two glass panes to give unparalleled strength.

With a cushioned stop and all mechanics concealed within the track, the Vitris Soft-Close glass sliding door opens and closes silently and effortlessly regardless of the weight of the glass or speed of closure. Unlike its competitors, this unique system offers different mounting methods, giving the option of wall, ceiling or glass mounts for ultimate flexibility when designing the look of your home.

For expert advice on all glass solutions for your home, pop into the Euroglass Christchurch showroom at 44 Mandeville Street in Riccarton, visit them online at www.euroglass.co.nz or call 0800 387 645.

Yes, paint is all about making big changes for small change, and this year the latest colour trends are

getting a sophisticated makeover.A dusty and smoky look is rapidly

replacing cleaner pastels, marking the transition to the urbane hues of 2016. Home owners and DIY enthusiasts will welcome a new palette of soft, timeless

COLOURWhen it comes to home décor, colour has always been the secret weapon of the masses. It allows people to quickly and affordably transform living spaces, limited only by their imagination and the speed of a brush stroke.

GETTING CREATIVE

colours such as greyed blues and deep charcoals that give way to bold splashes of colour.

Green is coming through in almost every way possible: from deep, earthy tones, to light, airy nature-inspired tones and through to a soft, muted-looking shade of green.

Blues have also become muted, with sea-washed tones and fresh blues through to more powdery tones, with the ever-popular duck-egg blues offering just a hint of colour.

To complement the natural timbers that are coming through strongly in the home, browns are becoming more yellow-based. Warm, dark browns appear to be the current bestseller, offering a great pairing to timber or a strong contrast to other colours.

Grey is also getting a sophisticated and stylish makeover, with deep charcoals and other moody darks offering density and depth, while its lighter incarnation is pairing with beige to create a contemporary pastel tone.

But if you're craving colour, all is not lost. Blue-toned reds, daring purples and hot magenta pinks are great for a bold burst of colour to add some flair and energy to a room.

REALTY'S GOLDEN GIRL

Diane Astle's passion for property is just one of the reasons for her longevity. “I've always loved homes and what they mean to each of us. They are our special haven, where we retreat to from the rest of

the world,” Diane muses.“Buying and selling a home is one of the biggest and most important

investments of a lifetime, so it's important we guide our clients through the process from beginning to end, offering the best service and the best price.

“Rental properties are managed as if they are our own, with regular property inspections to ensure the client's investment is well cared for, and our high-end property management software ensures they are never out of pocket.”

To offer clients the total package, Diane launched the Milly Molly Mandy Home Staging Company to create picture-perfect interiors to attract potential buyers or tenants and to potentially increase the asking price for a property.

“By introducing modern furnishings we create a cohesive look that enables people to see the ultimate lifestyle a home has to offer, adding considerable value,” Diane advises.

FINDING SOLUTIONS to the most complex of house projects

By Cheryl Colley

The key to their success is in their company's name. Ron and Adrian Bradley of Innovate Renovate are not only experts in renovations of all types, but they are also innovators and problem solvers.

These attributes were definitely required for one of their recent projects – repairs to an earthquake-

damaged 1980s townhouse in Burnside, where the foundation slab had slumped to varying degrees up to a maximum of 68mm. The situation was complicated by the fact that the townhouse was the rear unit of two conjoined dwellings. The front unit had little earthquake damage and its integrity needed to be maintained while the rear unit was lifted from its slab for levelling work to be undertaken.

Add even more complications and, prior to the lift, all the concrete paths and landscaping within one metre of the foundation needed to be removed and then the lift had to be undertaken without removing the house's brickwork. Once the

foundation was repaired and the house resettled, all the paths and lawns were relaid, while any damaged brickwork was ground out and repointed and the entire interior of the house replastered and repainted.

If you think this sounds complex, it most certainly was. It required all of Ron and Adrian's skill and knowledge of building processes to scope and cost the work, plan the timetable, select the team of

tradies required and to manage the whole project. “The outcome was extremely satisfying,” says Adrian. “We were able to help home owners who otherwise would not have known where to begin, and the result has totally exceeded their expectations.”

LITTLE GREEN FINGERS and global gumboots

Following the success last year of the inaugural Oderings School Gardens Show, the Canterbury Horticultural Society is pleased to announce that this year's competition will

take place at the Woolston Club between 11 and 13 March.

The event showcases the innovative garden designs of 12 Christchurch primary schools. The theme this

year is 'our world' and schools participating in the competition may use their imagination and creative skills to produce an original landscaped garden which interprets this theme.

Of last year's competitors, former Ellerslie judge Rachel Vogan commented that the quality of the entries was exceptional. “These gardens would not be out of place in an international design competition,” she said.

Tony Kunowski, Manager of the Canterbury Horticultural Society, said “Christchurch is the Garden City, and we would love to see the show become a major event in our summer calendar. This is a great way to encourage children to work together as a team, to fire up their imaginations and thought processes, from planning and design stage to execution. It is hugely rewarding to see their ideas take shape, and to see the pride the children take in showing their completed pieces.”

Kunowski explained that the children have to think about theme, colour and texture, in a three-dimensional form, working with a variety of mixed materials and plants, flowers and vegetables, to create a living work of art.

“It is great hands-on, tactile learning outside of the classroom environment. It is hugely rewarding for us to see their ideas take shape, and the pride the children take

in showing their completed pieces.” he said.“With the generous support of our

sponsors, we are committed to encouraging horticultural inspiration among our younger generation. Today's competitors are tomorrow's landscape designers. We encourage you to support this event and recognise the enormous amount of hard work and dedication each school team puts in to their wonderful creations. We look forward to seeing you there.”

OUTDOORSBy Michael Coulter

‘Tis the season to...tend the gardenLate summer and the start of the early autumn season is a time of

harvest and preparation for winter crops. Apples and pears

are at their very best, and nothing can compare with the flavour of

tree-ripened fruit. To keep flowers in bloom, remove the spent flowers and cut back excess

growth. Keep gardens weed-free as this helps stop pests and

disease on plants. The days can still be very warm,

so watering is still required.

VEGETABLE GARDENS

1. Plant winter brassicas2. Feed leeks and keep well-watered3. Spray stone fruit trees for leaf curl with copper sprays, and prune4. Feed and keep citrus trees well-watered to ensure good-sized, juicy fruit5. Pick apples when ripe. Good, firm fruit can be stored by wrapping it in tissue paper, placing in a box and storing in a cool, dark place6. Remove lower leaves from tomatoes to help ripening7. Sow green crops on unused ground to improve soil for next season's crops

LAWNS

1. Mow lawns each week, but not too low 2. Feed and weed-type fertilisers can now be applied 3. De-thatch lawns before winter begins4. New lawns may now be sown so that they are established before winter5. Look out for fungus diseases in grass and treat if needed

FLOWER GARDENS

1. Cut back spent flower heads on perennials and lilies2. Tie up taller-growing plants like chrysanthemums and asters before they get too tall and fall over 3. Remove summer flowering annuals as they finish flowering to make way for winter/spring flowering annuals4. As the weather cools, spring bulbs should be planted in the ground or in pots5. Cuttings of geraniums and fuchsias taken now will give good plants next spring for planting out6. Plant pansies, primulas, polyanthus, poppies and violas now for good winter displays

FIVE YEARS ONC

As we reflect on the last five years, architect

Cymon Allfrey asks us to look forward. Is

our greatest challenge yet to come?

Towards the end of last year I was asked to present a paper at the Architectural Designers New

Zealand (ADNZ) conference about how we, as a design community, responded to the events of 4 September 2010 and 22 February 2011. Centred on the days and weeks immediately after these events unfolded, the presentation was designed to provide an insight into Christchurch at that time. As a lead-in to the discussion, raw footage of 22 February was played and, while I was prepared for this video, I was unprepared for the manner in which it affected me and how hard it was, nearly five years on, to talk about that day.

The last five years can be viewed as a collection of stories which, despite being connected by a common thread, are all different and unique. Regardless of the time that has passed, there is a raw grief that continues to connect them and always will. Perhaps we will never be able to talk about that period separate from our emotions.

While there have been some incredible lows over the last five years, in those first few weeks and months some of that was about making sure the stress of the people who relied on me, emotionally and financially, was reduced. I needed to reassure staff they would still get paid and

that there was still a job for them when all else seemed to be falling apart. While there was, and still is, discussion around the opportunities that were created, at that point it was about the survival of the team and helping clients. It was a different kind of opportunity – one of emotional support and expert knowledge, rather than growth and development.

As we moved past the initial grief and devastation I began to feel privileged to be part of building a city - and I still do. For the design and construction industry, this

is the most significant contribution being made to an urban area since Christchurch's settlement over 170 years ago. Development at that time was fuelled by excitement and decisions to establish, rather than fuelled by necessity. We have been given a chance to make a positive mark on the landscape and the future of our city. This is both aspirational and inspirational.

While we pause to look back and reflect, it is just as important that we look forward. What will the next five years bring? Five

years ago, both of my girls were at primary school; now my youngest is at high school. Our needs have changed - not just as a small family unit, but as a city. Where five years ago companies like Tesla were in their infancy, now we are faced with self-drive technology. Where once we looked at how to deal with cars in the central city, in five years we will be looking at where the cars wait for us, not simply where to park them.

With evolving technology, rapid change is inevitable and we need to be innovative and challenged in our thinking. We need to be designing for the future and thinking about “where to” next? Given the rate of change in technology, a number of our decisions may become redundant or obsolete. We need to consider the legacy of the decisions we are leaving behind and shift the focus from convention and the way we have always done things, to the unimaginable. We need to open our minds to the future.

The events of five years ago are not only our past, but they are our future. Our biggest challenge is to take the blinkers off and be prepared for change. Anything is possible.

Advancements in modern technology mean we can now add security, privacy, character and insulation to our homes - all with the simple application of window film.

At almost quarter of the cost of double-glazing, solar window film offers an affordable alternative.

It reduces the need for expensive heating and cooling systems and allows you to save on power bills.

Solar film also reduces damage to your furnishings and artwork by cutting out up to 99 percent of the sun's harmful UV rays, while reducing internal glare and reflection at night. This means you can enjoy uninterrupted views of the city's twinkling lights.

Safety and security window film provides added protection for your family and property. Eliminate nasty accidents in the event of glass breakage or extreme weather conditions and protect your precious belongings from potential break-

ins with protective window film that is up to seven times thicker than standard films.

Unique tinted films can give greater privacy during the day and throughout the night, while decorative films are a great way to introduce character in your kitchen or bathroom's glassed areas.

Tint a Home's Christchurch franchise Tint a Car can provide the same service for your vehicle with tinted windows, custom

car wraps and paint protection film, which provides the ultimate defence against stone chips, scrapes and scratches.

With over 25 years' experience in the window film industry, manager Marcus Law and his professional and friendly team offer great advice and quality service. Call the team on 03 377 7717, visit the team at 40 Buchan Street in Sydenham, or see more at www.tintacar.co.nz.

There's a natural metamorphosis that exists in one's career – the twists and turns that build a rich tapestry of experience. Some of these changes are organic and others strategic. The most successful among the

professionally ambitious are, in fact, the ones that respond with an open mind to both scenarios.

Eponymous business Young Architects has a resilient leader at its helm whose career is the distilled

essence of potential fulfilled thanks to capitalising on such twists and turns.

Greg Young is an established, highly-respected and award-winning architect and his professional path is a little bit out of the ordinary – a reality that has certainly paid dividends for him and his clients.

The type of resilient personality that takes a 'silver lining' approach to more challenging situations, Greg says the recession rearing its head at the time he was ready to make his way in the world only made him more determined. He was dedicated to pursuing the type of work experience that would lay robust foundations for the rest of his career.

“I'd actually describe my path as being quite different and unique from other architects,” Greg explains. “I started in

structural engineering and while I was working there I began studying architectural technology before moving across to architecture at a later date.

“The approach I took to entering the architectural industry was different, but worked really well. The fact I started out in structural engineering also means I have a lot more structural knowledge than you usually would as an architect.”

With over 30 awards – and counting – under his business belt, Greg attributes almost 13 years of great business to great staff. Certainly the capability and passion of the Young Architects team is obvious in one of its recent builds, a property in Worsley Spur.

“The joy of that job was in getting the client the most value out of their investment. It was also in the simplicity of the approach taken when addressing all of the demands of a new build. With the house

being right on the plateau of the spur it was extremely exposed, which had its own set of challenges.

“It was almost a commercial style of build rather than residential, but we fitted it out like a bach with lots of timber. It 'floats' beautifully over the land so as not to disturb the natural environment it is located in. We were really lucky as our clients were a pleasure to work with, so it was a very smooth process.”

Setting an important quality and style precedent for the residential and commercial rebuild of Canterbury, Greg comments: “I think we have an amazing opportunity here for architects – one we hopefully will never see again, for that matter.

“For the foreseeable future our city will have a changing face, but it's very exciting. Christchurch city will definitely find its feet!”

I've always been a fan of BMW. I got my first one at 21, so it's easy for me to understand why people love them. The

drive, the smell and the details of the vehicles are all simply fantastic.

A friend of mine, Jeff Poulter, has the best 1988 BMW M3 I've ever seen. The BMW M-machines are limited-edition, high-performance versions of the 3 Series,

In my journey to understand car enthusiasts and their love of vehicles, there is a similar link among all of them - passion for their cars and for the history of the makes.

“A car has to have soul, otherwise it's just a set of wheels.”

5 Series and 6 Series sedans and are the most successful touring cars in history. They are just the best of the best, and while catching up with Jeff, I got to take this left-handed beauty for a spin. It is a superb car to drive – responsive and smooth as if it had rolled off the production line only the day before.

As Jeff says: “a car has to have soul, otherwise it's just a set of wheels.” Jeff has

three children and he's left the M3 in his will to his son, Faron. That's how much this car means to him; it's part of the family. Jeff took a photo of an M3 back in 1988 and he still has that image. It was then that he fell in love with the model and now he has his very own. Isn't that a happy ending to a story? “It may cost a little more to run and it's quirky and a bit temperamental, but really I would forgive it anything.”

Recently I caught up with two great guys, Glynn Jones and Gary Cliff from the Porsche Club New

Zealand. Gary and Glynn explained to me that a taste for particular cars is acquired over time.

The Porsche Club in Christchurch has a great mix of people and they are all open to talking about their wonderful cars. Glynn has been married to his 356

cabriolet longer than to his wife while Gary participated in the recent Skope classic in his 911. I got the feeling that it wouldn't have mattered where he placed: just the opportunity to drive the beautiful machine was sufficient.

The 911 engine was used from 1963 till 1997. After all, when it's not broken why fix it? In general Porsches are robust, strong vehicles you can drive daily, unlike other

sports cars. They have style and are surprisingly accessible if you want to own one. Enzo Ferrari once said: “When you buy a Ferrari, you pay for the engine and I will give you the rest of the car for free.” Glynn says that when you buy a Porsche, you get the whole car.

There are only a few car makes in the

world that have a special aura

associated with them and Porsche is

definitely one of those few.

“Porsche, there is no substitute.” This is the line that Tom Cruise uses in the classic 1983 movie Risky Business. There are only a few car makes in the world that have a special aura associated

with them and Porsche is definitely one of those few.

First thing you must do when buying a used car is to check if there's any money owing on it. At www.carjam.co.nz you can buy a financial check on

what might be owed. It's well worth the $15.90 that you pay”. I definitely agree with that piece of wisdom. I once bought a car privately from someone. The nightmare that followed for the next month was horrific. I wish I'd had the sense to check first.

“Look under the car - does it have any leaks? When you drive does it make unusual noises? Have a third person take a look at it. Remember that all New Zealand cars bought from a used-car dealer rather than through a private sale have a three-month 5000km warranty so you still have some piece of mind about the purchase going forward. Also find a mechanic whom you can trust, because you know you're going to need them”.

What about Japanese versus European? Japanese vehicles are reliable, well put together and simplified. On the other hand, when you buy European you get more technology, a nicer drive, prestige and style. I like a quality drive with a bit of style so I drive an Audi but, at the end of the day, the car-buying guide Dog and Lemon say “You should drive the cheapest car your ego will allow you to drive.”

By Nicholas Henare

When you are looking to upgrade your car what do you need to consider? You definitely need to make a list detailing your requirements. Do you need a family car or a sports car; a car capable of

towing a boat or caravan; a European car or a Japanese car? Is the way the vehicle drives important to you? I caught up with a motoring expert to ask him the hard questions. Here is his advice.

LET THE BUYER BEWARE

Since launching in 2013, University of Canterbury Motorsport (UCM) has seen a number of its students race into professional automotive and motorsport engineering careers

around the world. Most recently, UCM students have been offered job interviews by professional motorsport teams in Australia following (Society of UCM's success in the Formula SAE Automotive Engineering) but there are also competition, opportunities in New Zealand and elsewhere globally.

Faculty Advisor to the UCM team Bruce Robertson says that two University of Canterbury graduates are working for Jaguar Cars in the United Kingdom; another is working for motorsport consultancy Optimum G in the United States; and three have recently begun working with Rodin Cars in Waiau. “The organisation that has started up in Waiau is unique in the world and we are very lucky to have it on our doorstep.”

Designing and testing a racing vehicle is no easy task. The UCM team realised this and asked for help from the university's High Performance Computing Centre. That help came in the form of part of the centre's ‘I Dataplex’ system, which enabled the motorsport students to analyse and simulate the complex fluid dynamics of the Formula SAE car in motion.

speedSome University of Canterbury students are taking the fast-track to top-level motorsport careers, with graduates being chosen to design, test and build what could be the world's fastest track car.

into students' careers

So it looks like students at UCM are in pole position in the race for jobs in the motor vehicle racing industry.
