JASCO Meets New CPO of Selangor

!MICCI's Joint Action Security Council (JASCO) led by its Chairman, Rajan Mittal, met with the new Chief of Police, Selangor, YDH SDCP Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan on 8th November 2013. The meeting was hosted by Nestle Malaysia Berhad at its premises. Nestle’s Regional Head - Malaysia/Singapore, Alois Hofbauer welcomed the Chamber's effort in working closely with the Malaysian police on matters of importance to its Members. !The Council highlighted a number of concerns, namely on organised crime particularly on robberies at petrol stations, hijack of tobacco and stolen containers from ports due to forged documents; and how the Prevention of Crime Act (PCA) aims to contain crime. To this end, the Council suggested that there was a need to increase police patrols at petrol stations and to keep proper records on these patrols, alert the industries to new modus operandi involving criminal incidences and to provide necessary details on PCA that would benefit the industry.

In response to the issues and suggestions, Datuk Shukri stated that a number of groups have been identified in relation to organised crime and that measures are already underway to apprehend those responsible. He urged the industry to work closely with the police by reporting any crimes immediately to assist the police in responding more effectively. Datuk Shukri also stressed that though the technology and standard operating procedures are in place, industries must consider security audits as an ongoing procedure. !For further information please contact Ilyani Yusof at [email protected]. !!!

“ We are recognising the highly important role that media plays in Malaysia’s pursuit of business and environmental sustainability. It is in line with the objectives of the PMHA, which gives public recognition to companies and businesses for their accomplishments and leadership in environmental sustainability.”

MICCI Reaches Out to the Minister of NRE A delegation of MICCI's Environment and Natural Resources Council led by its Chairman, Dato' Kok Wee Kiat and MICCI President, Simon Whitelaw made a courtesy visit to Y.B. Datuk Seri G. Palanivel, the new Minister of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) on 30 October 2013. !The aim of the visit was to update the Minister on the Council's initiatives and to discuss some key environmental issues facing the industry. Among the issues brought to light were:- !Illegal farming in Cameron Highlands The recent mud flood which hit the Bertam Valley could have been avoided if proper control on farms operating in the area were implemented. The increasing number of illegal farms operating on top of the hills contributed to soil erosion causing loose soil and rainwater to flow into the surrounding rivers more rapidly. !Climate Change and Green Technology With intense weather, changing rainfalls and rising oceans, the risks of climate change are well known. These changes will result in competition for new resources, territorial change and disruption to trade patterns, all of which have the potential to cause conflict between nations. Malaysia considers this a serious environmental issue and has shown its commitment by participating in the Warsaw Climate Change Conference 2013. !Enforcement An increased number of organisations operating illegally has created a negative impact on the business environment and has caused difficulties to organisations that are operating according to the law. There are regulations for every sector in place however, there is a lack in enforcement of these regulations. !Ministry Engagement Frequent dialogues are needed between the Ministry and MICCI given the Chamber's position in obtaining first hand information on environmental issues from its wide membership. !Datuk Seri Palanivel assured the Chamber that the Ministry would work towards greater collaboration for the benefit of businesses in the country. !For further information please contact Ilyani Yusof at [email protected].

MICCI-IDEAS Briefing on the Education Blueprint !!!!!!!!The Malaysian Education Blueprint (MEB) launched by the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia on 6 September 2013 is a 15-year roadmap for the country's education system. In line with this, MICCI's Education Focus Group in collaboration with the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) held a briefing on the Blueprint on 26 September 2013. !The briefing provided an overview of the Blueprint including its 11 shifts, aspirations, curriculum, teachers, school leaders, schools and the MoE. It touched base on the areas where the Blueprint has done well, role of the private sector and on IDEAS current projects and its take on the Blueprint. The briefing also underlined some areas where the Blueprint fell short specifically on the question of accountability, whether or not public schools had been given enough autonomy to operate at an optimal level. !The Chamber firmly believes that constant consultation among the education providers, government agencies, students/teachers/parents and the private sector is needed due to the importance of human capital to the nation's economy and for the social wellbeing of the people. !For further information please contact Chang Hou Yea at [email protected].
